Because if the team had a good chance at an at large we were all just gonna skip out on caring about the MAC Tournament?

"See everyone in Cleveland"

Are we just skipping conference play? I thought we had BG next. Step back from the ledge.

I'll be at the BG game - because I'm excited to see this Bobcat team on the road. Because we suck at home.

We suck at home?  At-Large done?  One loss and everything is over?  C'mon man, there are a lot of things that could happen between now and March.  Let's think a little more logically here.

Let's be honest - it's done. we had no preseason hype. we have no wins over ranked teams. shine coming off Northern Iowa and Marshall. There was simply no margin for error. Then we lose at home to a solid but unspectacular Robert Morris team (again with the Robert Morris - are you freaking kidding me?). It will take us 6 or 7 straight just to get back to our current number of votes. So, yes, we have the conference season but the next games we play that affect the postseason are in Cleveland.

Realisitcally yes an at large is done, but technically no. If this team wins the bracketbuster, then goes 14-2 in league play, and wins 2 games in the MAC tourney they would end up with 29 wins or so. That would probably get us in. But that aint happening so no need to worry about it.

There are 17 games between now and the MAC tourney.  Win 12 or 13 of those, the bracketbuster and a game at the MAC tourney and we're at 26 or 27 wins.  If that happens, it'll be really tough for the NCAA to keep us out, especially since it looks like the PAC 12 may be a one-bid conference.  And remember, Robt Morris isn't just any lower major school.  They are a perennial NCAA tourney team and usually make a good showing there against big 6 schools.  Coming into tonight, there were only two MAC schools with a better RPI than RMU, so we we'll see a team of this caliber only two or three more times (Kent twice and maybe the bracketbuster) for the rest of the season.

That said, the Cats have to have better shot selection than they showed tonight.  Too many wild threes instead of working for a deuce.  I liked DJ's trey at the end of the half but that was one of the few times tonight when the shooter (no matter who it was) had such fluid motion going into a three.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

Remember that they changed the format of the tournament this year, so that the top 2 seeds get byes into the semis.

The RPI might be the most uselss number in all of sports.  Before tonight's debacle, we were 40, right in between Florida and Missouri.  We're nowhere close to those programs.

1. You're wrong about the RPI.
2. It doesn't matter how accurate it is as long as the NCAA continues to endorse it.

Come March, it has a purpose.  This early into the season, it tells you almost nothing.

Give me a break  .  .  .  Is Louisville "near those programs"?  We are near UL.  You are too impressed with "big names" and don't give enough credit to the RMUs of the world.

Ozcat, at last some sanity with all this RPI hyperbole on this site. We don't have a great OOC schedule. Some here think beating Northern Iowa is like beating UCLA and Alcindor. We have a nice team, but we have to win the MAC tourney to get in the NCAA. It's a shame that we didn't play a better schedule to really see what we're made of.

Yeah, god forbid we have a little buzz and excitement around the team that leads to increased attendance or anything. What we need are more wet blankets who keep expectations nice and low.

As for the RPI comments, it's built to measure what teams have done. Is Florida talented? Yeah, probably but who exactly have they beaten? Florida St and Arizona are both pretty decent wins, but they've played exactly 3 games on the road and lost all 3 (including 1 to a pretty pathetic Rutgers team). Missouri's much better, but it's easy to look good when you've played exactly two true road games.

That's why we have these metrics, it's an unbiased way to evaluate what a team has done.

I will be sure to drive over and tell Shaka Smart if VCU looses again to Georgia State or Northeastern this year that they should cancel the rest of the season.

Ohfergawdsake

Hide the razor blades, knives, guns, drano and put the suicide watch signs up. How did we suddenly get an in fusion or irrational thought? Just flippin amazing, might as well shut the program down. Puhhhhhllllleeeze. Put the 24 hour rule in effect and let your emotions in line.

The excitement around the program is wonderful.  Nobody disputes that.  JSF, I don't think giacomo is trying to be a downer.

OCF, you're nuts.  While we played Louisville tough, we are not 'near' Louisville.  We beat Georgetown once.  I wouldn't say that qualifies us as 'near' them.  They regularly reside in the top 25.  We are thrilled to make the NCAA every so often.

BG86 - Yes, VCU had a hell of a run.  So did George Mason.  So did Kent.  The NCAA Tourney is wonderful, as you always have some great upsets.  But in the end, it rarely determines the 'best' team.

bornacat - I don't think anyone is drinking Drano.  I don't need 24 hours to get my emotions in check.  I try to be as emotionless as possible when portraying my thoughts on this site.  We lost to a good team at home tonight.  It's not the end of the world.  However, I'm not going to just type pro-OU sentiment for no reason.

Truth is, we're a pretty darn good team that has no business being in the top 25 at the point in the season.  We have the ability to play well and should be highly competitive in the MAC.  Could we make the NCAA tourney and pull off a few victories?  I still think we can.  But make no mistake about it, we are nowhere near the caliber of team one would have to be to finish in the upper half of the Big Ten, ACC, SEC, or Big East.  If this hurts to hear, I'm sorry (as I'm apparently just enamored with big names . . .)  It's reality.

This would be great advice for our beloved DFC.

I'm super bummed about this loss, but not really discouraged.  They played well, the shots just did not fall...It happens.

And in another thread you're talking about how Louisville isn't "that good".

1) You're talking out of both sides of your mouth on Louisville. Make up your mind. This season I'd argue we're pretty close to Louisville. We played them close on their court. If you looked at the past 10 years are we close to UL? Hell no, but that means jack when it comes to the current basketball season.
2) You're giving teams credit for what they've done historically. You're the ESPN analyst who thinks Notre Dame is a top 5 College Football job on name alone even though they haven't been relevant in 2 decades.

Clearly we proved tonight that we're not ready for a Top 25 ranking, but there's no reason that this team can't hang with pretty much anyone they're likely to come across on a neutral court this season.

On the bright side, if anyone tells you we'd be 12-2 heading into MAC play before the season started, we'd all take it.  Like everyone else I wanted the magic carpet ride to last a bit longer.  Loved the buzz in the Convo, talking it up to friends and the soundbites here and there.   However I saw we had Kent, Buffalo and Akron all in the next couple weeks and realized that a loss and dropping into obscurity for the next couple of months was probably a reality.  However losing at home tonight was a kick in the gut nonetheless.  Like everyone else, I wanted this to continue untill we saw OHIO Top 25.  The reality however is that the pollsters would drop us with any loss and while we wanted that loss to come later, it would eventually come.  While it hurts tonight, maybe long term it's good we got it out of the way right now.

My concern all along is that we're a finesse team that's going to lose some games when we get into slugfests, especially if the 3's aren't falling.  Tonight we ran into a bluecollar, hardnosed team and we struggled.  We played with fire a few times, but tonight this team had a little too much talent, a little too much grit and a few too many clutch shots to overcome as in past games.  And my guess is that we'll run into many typical MAC slugfests against inferior teams who play scrappy and struggle.

When you add up poor 3 point shooting + losing too many 50/50 balls + Baltic inconsistent in the post versus last year + Smith/Goard/Johnson invisible on the offensive end + poor free throw shooting= all in one night that's got to equal some loses and tonight it did.

Total bummed, but trying to be rationale.

Oz has made it clear many times...Ohio is his minor league team and Ohio State is his major league team.  Any thoughts that the 2 worlds would ever realistically cross in any way is very insulting to him.
