Gary was booked on assault charges as recently as 2009. Not to mention, his numerous other offenses during his NBA playing days. Most of you know the details of some of these events, so it will suffice to say that one in particular is pretty gruesome and despicable.

Are we so desperate for a Bobcat sports legend (and a successfully promotional day) that we are willing to overlook his long history of violence, particularly towards women?

I grew up worshipping Gary Trent. I wore his jersey to play drive-way basketball and my dad and I would stay up late to watch the Blazers games on Direct TV. I think we watched almost every game during Gary's rookie campaign.

That being said, it would seem that we are all engaging in collective amnesia by honoring an individual with a terribly spotty personal record. Perhaps Schaus and some of the others can claim ignorance, but those of us that have been around the block know better.

That is all. Thank you.

Glad you came up out of the basement there in PA.

He is being recognized for his accomplishments on the court representing Ohio.

Amnesia with regard to his life ia not selective. THis is not the good guys HoF. He has been contrite and finished the requirements to have your jersey hung based on the things he did ON the court.

Imagine how many gyms around the country would have to remove HOF members, jersies and plaques if we judged OFF the court transgressions.

He represented OHIO while he was there and dominated ON the court. That is why his jersy is being hung.

Newt was right about one thing in last night's debate. All this judgement of folks is bogging down this country and keeping good people on the sidelines instead of putting their problems behind them and becoming better people.

Thanks for your opinion, duly noted but hardly relevant to this ceremony.

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Winter comes and asks how you spent your summer.....

The game loves and rewards those who love and reward the game

Ty Cobb is clearly not HOF material.

I grew up worshipping Robert Parish and Larry Bird. Later on, information came out showing or strongly suggesting that Parish was a wife-beater and Bird was a deadbeat dad.

As a young adult, I respected Bill Clinton. Later on, I learned about how he sold our nation down the river while colluding with criminals and oppressing people.

About a decade ago, I became a journalist and thought for a while that it was overwhelmingly an honorable profession. Eventually, I figured out that this was, at best, an outdated perception.

All you can really do is take off the rose-colored glasses and keep your eyes open for people truly worthy of immense respect. They're out there, and some of them are athletes, politicians and journalists.

All this was said superbly.  There are no rose colored glasses, as you say.  EVERYONE in our world says or does something that they look back on and wish they'd not done.  You try to make amends, move on, and do your best to do what you think is right.  I'd hope Gary has done the same, just like I'd hope a lot of people have when they make a bad decision in life.

nice article from last year. Gary did alot for this program. He built extreme interest. He deserves to be honored.

I appreciate the fact that someone went ahead and said what I have been thinking about for weeks now.  Thanks, Paul Graham.  I also have to say, Putnam, you make some good points as well.  As excited as I am about honoring a Bobcat athlete tomorrow, I would be absolutely lying if I said it didn't leave a pit in my stomach knowing the guy used to beat his girlfriend in high school.  She was a friend of a good friend of mine, and it was a sad situation.  I know the guy had a rough life growing up and all I can hope for is that he's truly sorry for his previous actions and that he is dedicated to teaching his boys to know better and do better.
