Wish we still had James Kinney

I know it's spilled milk, water under the bridge, whatever you want to call it.

But I just checked where James Kinney landed, and man, we really could have benefited from him staying.

Starting at San Jose State, averaging 16.3 ppg, shooting 46-111 from 3-pt. land (41%).

RIght

Always hate these threads because it never takes into account ....at what price? Really. These threads drive me right up a wall. I admire him for getting it together and choose not to go into what else surrounded the young man at the time but really...at what price would you keep a kid and hope Athens does not bring him down.

When parents ask me....I tell them ....if your kids have a problem with alcohol, pot, party or pussy it is probably not a great place to be...if they want to come to program on the rise, put in the work to be part of something special and have a great college experience then the place is heaven. Caveat Emptor.

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

All rightie then. I wish the team had a James Kinney-like outside shooter.

He can stroke it, and so can those who must read things the worst possible way.

They have pot in California too.

In the alternative, I'll take a teetotaling, temptation-proof Tebow who can stick the three as soon as someone can dial that up.

Note that I didn't write word one about why Kinney left or who he'd be better than.

I just wish we had him and Maurice Pearson. It's my spilt milk thread. Sorry your mileage varied.

I'm reminded of the axiom about one bad apple spoiling the barrel. Guys like James Kinney, Steve Coleman, and Armon Basset were very good players who partook in some... less than productive off-court behavior. I'd love to have as many good players as possible on this team, but there's something to be said for having a group of guys who aren't interested in the knucklehead stuff.

THats livable.

We have a couple of very good shooters who are not getting the ball where they need it and are not floating to the open spot. I saw a great example at the beginning of the game last night . DJ had Nick on the left wing, Dj got the mismatch with Zeke with Nicks man dropped to the block. At the very moment DJ looked Nick slid south giving the recovering defender an angle on line of the ball andforcing DJ to shoot a fadeaway 3 over the top of a closing Zeke.....not a high % shot. WE try to teach shooters to alwys float to the open spot and have high hands rady to shoot and feet set to step into the shot. much as Nick was ale to do at the end of the first half.

He hate hit the nail on the head. NO telling what this locker room would be like with the gans constantly raging about the current police blotter. I will never take awwy the incredible talent thses young men have had nor will I ever believe that the Pearson situation was seriously mishandle given the fact the the Kansas twins actually used high powered pellet guns sniping young co eds fro high atop Jayhawk Tower and played their career out at KU.

I'd hope note. Conceptually, basketball is a pretty simple sport.

Really? I think you over estimate the experience of kids who have coaches through grade school, middle and high school and then summer ball who just roll out the balls and rely on athletes to make plays and then have to learn the game once they get to college. Many HS superstars have got through with sheer athleticism and then have to actually come together to learn a system. Many of the athletes in our IN top HS's are immediate players in college because the HS coaches run their programs and systems the same way a college would. Great athletes like Dominic James, Oden, Conley, Zach Novak, etc start immediately because they are used to seeing scouting reports, running sytems of defense and offense in the same way a college tam operates. If you went back to the HS's of each athlete on our team you would find they are a product of their background.

Floating to the open spot and seeing the angles is NOT innate or instinctive. YOu have to look and read. You have to study your team mates and know the flow of the offense and what the defense is going to give you both philosophically and in real time reaction. If you stay in the open lanes and see the floor in 3d...you may be successful....

The concept is simple, it's the nuance, understanding, reaction and execution that make it beautiful and impressive.

To add to what borna said in a way...I was watching a re-run of Big Bang Theory last night. They were trying to teach Leonard, one of the geeks, about American Football. It led me to laugh because I'm also a big fan of soccer, or "football" as the rest of the world logically calls it. Because of all the rules, teaching someone who's never seen it American football is really tough - i.e. an exchange student as an example. Soccer is an even more simple game than basketball - meaning there are fewer rules to learn - and yet teaching someone where to be, when to be there, etc. in the flow of the game is not easy at all, and definitely takes practice no matter how athletic they are. Compared to borna or some others on this board, I'm not one with a coaches mind to know when players should be where on the floor at all times. But explanations like he gave give insight into some of the shooting woes we've seen.

Are you guys forgetting that Kinney was asked to leave the team due to constant violations of team rules? He was a follower, not a leader. I am happy for him as an individual that he is succeeding, but he made choices to select himself out of our program. Groce gave Coleman, DeVaughn and Kinney more than enough chances to place the good of the team over their individual desires to party and get it done in the classroom. DeVaughn seemed to tightrope it through his four years and the other two couldn't.

Frankly, I am proud that our coaching staff took a stand. That behavior is a cancer in a locker room. Four years of looking the other way is not part of Groce's moral make-up. Nobody disputes Kinney's ability to shoot the ball. His last game in Athens was proof of that. We picked up Nick Kellogg in his place. Nick is a good shooter, solid defender and seems to be a team player. Unselfish, team ball requires hard work and trust in your teammates to do what they are supposed to on and off the court in preparation.

No doubt many players are top athletes and, so, get by on merely that skill in high school. And find that doesn't work in college.

And, I guess that we'd agree that a lot of people don't think.

But, c'mon, the concepts of are so simple: get to an open spot, use the players on the floor to get yourself open and to get your teammates open, know the angle a missed shot is likely to come off at, work with your teammates on offense and defense, be totally solid on the fundamentals, shoot when in balance and consider score/position of teammates/etc before shooting, etc. This should be mastered in 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 by jr. year of high school.

I understand there were big issues with Coleman, Kinney, and Pearson.

But, I think we could all agree that the current team could use all three of them IF they had the right attitude.

Can somebody hit a pull up jumper for me?.....
