Really wish we could get a few quality minutes from these guys.  We could have used the extra minutes/fouls against 'Kron.  Keely and Smith became much more passive when they got in quick foul trouble.

Based on reading here on the board, I've been led to believe both guys aren't playing much because of injuries.  Is that still correct for anyone that knows?

For what it's worth, I did not see Belton the bench last night--not even in street clothes??

Jacobs looks completely lost out there.  I was holding out hope for him to contribute to the team, but it's just not going to happen.  I'm not trying to be mean, I've heard nothing but good things about him as a person.  It's just disappointing that he has not developed into an inside force like we had all hoped.

They both were injured at the start of the year. Jacobs had a very minor injury, though, and Belton's bigger struggle probably was conditioning. Now, though, I've heard that Belton has had another injury issue, although I don't know that I've ever heard it been said what that is. I'm pretty sure Jacobs is fully healthy at this point.

Arkley reported through his Twitter feed around the start of the MAC season that Belton had a setback with his hip in practice. Unless someone has updated information, seems like that's the reason he's been out.

Not to belabor the point, but so injured you now can't even sit (or attend I would guess) a home game in street clothes? If you're not coming to the Convo for a home game wouldn't you guess the guys not even on the team.  The only other guess is that his hip is so injured he can sit in a chair that long (stand on the end of the bench) or he's not on campus getting medical assistance--but those seem like stretches.  From a competitive perspective I guess is doesn't matter as he may not see if the court even if fully healthy, but just wondering.

Arkley tweeted that Belton was back at practice today after being absent a couple of weeks to handle academics.

Thanks Ted, that answers the question.  You throw "academics" into the multiple other fitness and injury issues and you got to think this experiment is heading in a bad direction.

It's essentially a no risk experiment. Even if it goes bad, it won't hurt  the team unless he did something really wrong.

I agree. I have no problem with keeping him on the roster.  If the best thing that comes out of it is that he practices all season and bangs around our top 3 or 4 big guys in practice to toughen them up, that's great.

What would Charles Barkley do?

Agreed as well--we lose nothing filling a seat that otherwise would've been empty.  I was intrigued by getting a big banger that used to have talent inserted into the lineup about now, so I check for him on the bench regularly.

Also, it seems that Cincinnati didn't do right by Belton medically, so Ohio doing right by him that way is a nice thing, which never hurts.

What I don't get is that, as far as I know, there's an utter paucity of legitimate power forwards or centers on the list of recruits for next season. My understanding is that Anthony Allen and possibly Zack Garber or Isaiah Johnson will not or would not come aboard until the season after next. Unless I've overlooked something, there's no solution for next year to one of the team's weaknesses. The team would be poised to be awesome next year if this were properly addressed. How many, if any, scholarships are available for next year, or is Levert the final one?

Sadly ironic because for a stretch, we were Power Foward U. Trent, Hunter, Stonerook, Williams, Tillman...

We have no seniors graduating. Levert gets the scholarship vacated by Mitchell. However, we do have one scholarship that was taken away because of the academic issue. I don't know the status of that for next season.

Assuming that Levert will indeed claim the final scholarship ...

Why would you spend it on a shooting guard instead of a big?

Players already on the roster who can legitimately play SG and are likely to contribute at that position next year: Kellogg, Offutt, Johnson

Players already on the roster who can legitimately play center and are likely to contribute at that position next year: Keely

Players already on the roster who can legitimately play power forward and are likely to contribute at that position next year: Baltic, Smith, Keely

Kellogg and Johnson are sophomores, Offutt's a junior. Where's the playing time for Levert?

What happens if Keely, Baltic or Smith gets hurt?

I think everyone is a little disappointed that Jacobs has not been able to help the team much yet in game situations, but I wouldn't write him off yet. I think some people felt the same way about KVK his first couple of years. It's not all that uncommon for big guys to take a few years before they really can contribute. I think that's the hope we all have to hold out for. From what I've heard of Jacobs, he's going to do everything he can to make an impact in the future.

  That is a reasonable assessment.

Obviously someone didn't see our 3 point shooting the 3 games prior to Kent. Johnson is a non factor so yes we need a 3 point shooter. Kellogg has been inconsistent when we need him the most although he came through big against Kent. We proved in the NCAA tournament you can win at least a first round without much depth inside but it takes some good 3 point shooter like a Tommy Freeman.
