No time like the present...

A program with our history has to have more than 4 jerseys to hang, doesn't it?

How long should Ohio wait before it raises a player?

Even if they aren't getting a jersey hung, does it seem like there are enough basketball players with pictures in the lobby?

Does Leon Williams have a degree? Brandon Hunter?

DJ will have a very strong statistical case by March 2013.

I love that choice. You've got to love a two sport athlete like Chet.

I am not qualified to comment on pre 1999 nominees, but I would think anyone super deserving would have been properly memorialized by now.  Brandon Hunter has the best case by far, and yes he has a degree because I remember seeing him in his cap & gown with me in 2003.  D.J. will be right there with him when he is all done.  I don't think there is anyone else deserving of the high honor, in my opinion.  I LOVED Leon, but I don't think he is quite at that level.  He and Tillman are pretty neck and neck in my eyes.

I would love to see #34 raised in the rafters and B-Hunt back in the Convo.  My favorite Bobcat of all time.

Well if went with all sports, I think Mike Schmidt should get something. He's the best athlete ever from our school, yet I believe all he has is a HOF plaque at OU.

I know he doesn't make a huge effort himself, but maybe OU should try harder.

Mike Schmidt is a deadbeat as an alumnus. His next donation ( not promise) will be his first.

The lobby displays are really starting to look pretty bad, actually pretty embarrasing. Not Bball, but have you ever counted the number of golf trophies w/broken off clubs - !

Snoopy is in my (and Many others) opinion the best player w/out an official honour. He did not graduate, spent years professionally in the NBA and overseas, took very good care of himself and family by doing that. I think we should have a way to honour great players who were exceptionally successful during their career at OHIO - and if not HOF, or "retired/hanging replica/whatever it is" jerseys, then better recognition in the lobby displays. A historically arranged timeline display with photos and snapshot story highlights of team and great players would be nice. The display cases seem a mish mash of faded/yellowed tid bits now.

Wow!  Really? The fame they brought through their association with the U and their performance on the feild of play is the reason they are to be recognized.  THe common knowledge around Muncie is the fact that Bonzi bought his way to getting his jersey in the rafters. As good as he was without that BIG donation Ray would be up there alone, Pretty sure Bonzi still does not have his degree.

To be sure...the suggestion that we update the yellowed and fading pictures in the hallway was met with a similar ...."what have they given back?" when it was advanced last year.  '

It is OU's hall of fame and OU's  trophy cases and OU's history. I stood and watched OU fans walk around the hal of fame at Miami and point to pictures and tell stories about member after member of Miamil's HOF to their friends and children. You'd have a hard time recognizing the pics in the hall let alone trying to keep your kids interest to pass it on.....easy update. That suggestion up above is excellent..a timeiine tying it all together and paying homage to those who are threads in the Fabric of OU athletic history.

FYI - Even though the KFC/YUM Center in Louisville leaves a lot to be desired for how huge the place is - the history hall/nook off of the lobby (can't remember exactly what it was called) was Fantastic. You could spend hours just reading thru the posted history, articles, browsing the photo's, etc. We don't need That big a production, but just about anything would better than what we have now.

Mike Schmidt led the team to a CWS series appearance and is a baseball HOFer. I'd think that qualifies his on field performance.

I don't know about Trent and any money he's given back. Maybe he never has. To be honest, I really don't care either. He made them money then and he made people money this past weekend. My point is we aren't retiring jerseys because of donations.

For Schmidt, I know very well that he has made little effort himself. However, in a way I could still side with him. We have a first ballot HOF baseball player from our university and unless you go into the Convo and look for his plaque no one would ever know. I know baseball isn't as big a college sport as basketball, but he lead a northern school to a 6th place finish in the College World Series. I'd say more often than not he is considered the greatest 3rd baseman ever. Ohio should be doing whatever it takes to patch whatever falling out they had back up.

When they had the 1970 team reunion, I know they invited him back. Considering he still works around baseball it's a difficult thing for him to come and do. Tell him you want to have a Mike Schmidt Day and I guarantee he comes back. On accomplishments in their sport, he makes Gary Trent look like a JV player. The #20 (Schmidt style) should be somewhere prominent at Bob Wren Stadium.

YOu guys made the point eloquently.

I am glad Ohio has standards, not sure a lot of folks in Muncie think Bonzi should have joined Ray up there.

I am in agreement with the Schmidt fans.....get the number up at the Baseball stadium and in the locker room and give him his rightful honor for performmance on the diamond while at OU...it is a recruiting tool if nothing else.

THat said I am not sure anyone else past or present has achieved what those fellows in the trafters have. They all figured prominently in national press and brought huge notariety to the U as well as left a mark on the league and the fanbase that has rarely been equalled or surpassed. Those jersies are earned by guys who not be forgotten. Huge men who played Huge and garnered attention from far and wide and still live in the collective memories of those who saw them and even those who did not but heard of their deeds and accomplishments.

Not that it has any relevance but at Muncie Central, despite 8 State Banners, 13 Runners up and a multitude of Final FOurs there is only one retired jersey and it aint ROn Bonham, Bonzi Wells, Ray McCallum or any of the guys who have gone on to play College ball or pro ball.

First of all, Schmidt was inducted into the OU Athletics Hall of Fame.  That's enough.  But he acted like he was doing the school a favor in showing up for the ceremony, and he promised to give money that he later reneged on (multiple times).  So we've done as much as we need to do, IMO.

I am in the same boat with Mr Ruck but I can go back to 94 and I would give a nod to Hunter.  Also, and I know I am treading on ice when I say this, Geno Ford made a good impact as a Bobcat.  I do think Leon should get a look at also.  He, in my opinion, was a stronger force than Tillman.  And, if we only had Bassett a little more longer.  But he would have probably ended up in jail or suspended.

I was told that a portion of the $2 million Walter family donation for Convo upgrades (being paid out in 10 $200,000 installments) will be used to create a more fitting HOF.  But it might be later in the 10-year cycle.

When he was inducted into the HOF and honored in a ceremony in the Convo back in the early 1990s (I believe), he asked that all of his travel and entertainment expenses be paid by the athletic department.

It is nice to have a guy like SBH who provides insight that most folks do not know and is unafraid to put it out there. Fine line between informing folks and pissing them off but he does it well. Helps the rest of us who do not have info and history on our side.

Also good to know there is a plan and earmarked money already in play with the HoF.  The HoF is a good recruiting tool for those wide eyed kids who really are looking to move on to the next level.

I should disclose that my information on Schmidt came in separate conversations with a former AD and a former director of development.  Schmidt promised a large amount toward the new baseball stadium but then claimed he needed to invest the money in one of his marina businesses in Florida instead.  He let the U use his name and likeness in the fundraising campaign, but that was about it.  Another former AD said he felt like he needed to genuflect to get Schmidt to even speak to him.

I was told on Saturday by some of the AD staff that the Hall of Fame is getting redone in the Convo sooner rather than later.  I have a feeling that is something that may be done before next season.  I don't think anyone mentioned above deserves being recognized further than the Hall of Fame.  Gary is the only player we have seen since Luckett that deserved to have his jersey hung from the rafters.  There may be more room up there, but there is nobody else worthy of the honor right now.

I would say Mike Schmidt is about the same as the majority of our alumni base.  They loved the time they spent in Athens, but almost immediately after graduation move and never come back.  They do not give back to the university, or return to campus more than once a decade.  It is a shame that folks will speak highly of their times in Athens, but never come back or give back.  Mike Schmidt is just a typical, unconnected alumni.
