Not one mention of Gary Trents jersey being retired and the Ohio crowd at the Convo yesterday. I even thought perhaps we would get a mention on the Sunday broadcast as the sports weekend wrap up. I am really disappointed in Keith Morehouse in particular. His Sunday report was lazy! Highlights from yesterdays Marshall loss and WVU win. I did notice channel 10 was there yesterday. Remind me again why Athens is in a West Virginia market? Both markets suck something fierce at covering Athens.  I thought the WV ones did better overall in the years I was at OU, honestly. Their 11'oclock sports news had highlights and their after news sports show focused on Trent. In my opinion it was very good coverage. Tech the night before.  Then, the article about the bowl game was just a cut and paste from the AP wire that was largely slanted pro-FIU.  Lastly, they attached a color Little Caesar's Bowl logo to the top of the story.  That would have been a nice addition, except they were playing in the Beef O' Brady's Bowl that night. I even feel so compelled to look up the emails that you guys can send your complaints to! You can make a chicken/egg argument in terms of coverage and interest, but the truth is that newsrooms everywhere are getting smaller all the time. I once worked at papers the size of the one in Parkersburg, and when I started in 1996, our newsroom had two full-time sports guys and stringers for high school football games. Last I heard, that same newsroom had no full-time sports guys. They used some stringers and the managing editor (who in my days there did NO reporting) did some of the copywriting. I suspect that non-coverage is an issue of prioritizing with a threadbare staff. Despite proximity, there are probably a lot more WVU and Marshall fans in Parkersburg. It wouldn't surprise me if they used the AP wire to cover those teams and the statehouse either. Local TV news is starting to face some of the same issues as cable and the web dilute their audiences. To climb on my soapbox: We consume more news than ever before, but we pay less for it than ever before. Having professionals doing high-quality journalism costs money. No one's figured out the answer, but it's a sad irony. The lack of coverage of a college hoops game is of far less consequence than what it means to an informed populace and a functional democracy. I complain about my sports budget, but then I shut up when I realize that our news staff is down to half of what it was just 10 years ago. I recount what a bunch of 17 year olds do on a court. Nothing at all about Ohio. Definitely something of a boycott of Ohio going on.  Just compare it to several months ago when Ohio was getting nice articles even for the Bobcat Caravan.  Marietta College is 14-6 and beat the Wilmington Quakers this week in a sloppy OAC game.  How could they possibly ignore such a big story and report on Ohio's 18-4 record?  And for those of you that say they should cover Marietta College, there is a seperate daily paper (owned by the same company) called the Marietta Times.  I am not sure how they prioritize their coverage, but it seems really odd to me.  Today, there was a front page sports editorial column about 6-12 Glenville State College (Div 2) "turning things around".  They are located 90 minutes away and have an enrollment of 1400.  How many subscribers could possibly care about that?  I think there are more than 1400 Ohio alums in a 20 mile radius of Parkersburg. I understand the coverage of high school sports and personally enjoy reading those stories.  The communities want that information.  I also understand the coverage of WVU, Ohio State and Marshall because there are large numbers of fans here.  I do not understand, however, the dedicated coverage to Ohio Valley (700 students) and Glenville St. (1400 students).  Ohio is 35 minutes away and the closest Division I school.  We have fielded teams that are at the top of the MAC and the athletic department has marketed to this region.  I have personally gone out of my way to invite the media to events like the Bobcat Caravan to try to get it on their radar more often.  When they do report about Ohio, it is generally positive and well written.  I know I am biased, but it is strange that we get so little press.
