I hope this isn't taken as a flame, because it's not meant as such.

I'm beginning to see a lot of similarities between the 1995 season and the current one.

In 94-95, Ohio opened with the PNIT trophy, had a mostly hot and occasionally confounding MAC season, a home loss in the first round of the MAC tournament, and an NIT bid many felt was wrong when Miami and Ball State went to the NCAA.

In 11-12, Ohio opened strong, has had a mostly hot and occasionally confounding MAC season, and finds itself in 3rd place. Buffalo probably isn't going away; their pasting of Akron, albeit at home, is impressive. Akron finds themselves somewhat well positioned for an at-large if trends continue. And that leaves us just like that 1995 team.

Now many would argue that the 95 team was hampered by Gary Trent's mostly unreported abdominal injury. While this 12 team is hampered mostly by mentality.

Mentality can be fixed.

Seven games to do it.

The 95 team was more hampered by the loss of Jeff Boals in our game at Eastern. We were 15-4 (7-1 MAC) before he went down and 8-6 (7-5) after.

In my mind, this is all preparation for next season's run. I want as many hard times and trials as possible. Forge the team in fire and conquer the world next season.

well, we did make it to Toledo in 1995. We won our home tournament game before falling to Eastern in the semis. I think 96 was a home loss to ball state, and 97 a devastating home loss to wmu after failing to clinch the reg season a couple days earlier @ Kzoo. then the wilderness campaign. How oh how did Larry let it all slip away?

I'm gonna run for President what with my ability to remember wrong.

I still think there's similarities.

I still think there's a definite possibility of coming in a close third for two slots.

As I remember it, we lost in the first round to Western for 10 out of 11 years.

I'm not ready to concede until next season, but....We're gonna need a few things (IMO) for that to happen:  1)  Much more consistent play in from the bigs we currently have, or someone that's brought in to take someone's spot   2)  better free throw shooting across the board.  3)  DJ being the assist machine that he has been in the past.  We excel when he's dishing out 6,7,8 dimes a game.

That last season collapse against WMU was heartbreaking.  That season's team could have been special.

I think the similarities are our expectations, Although admittedly the 1995 team warranted those expectations coming off of a MAC Championship.  This team was a huge question mark going into the year.  I still find it interesting that we are 19-5 (7-3) and many people are calling this team a disappointment even when we win.

I'm not giving up on this year, but I keep thinking next year will be amazing.  The wrench would be if Groce gets a too-good offer and we have to transition to another coach.

1. Reggie has been getting better every year and Jon has improved over the course of the season. Maybe Belton will be ready, too.

2. Sometimes free throw shooting is like interceptions: They fluctuate from season to season.

3. I am not worried about this.

Last night it tasted like they ran out of sugar for the green Kool-Aid. What I'm really worried about - are we out of sugar for the year? Our weaknesses were Glaring, and they have become More so as we progress through the season. Opponents look to be capitalizing and executing on/vs those (even the weakest teams in the West), and they will even more so through the balance of the year as we soon begin a stretch of schedule that gets much tougher. I'll have a drink before the EMU game Saturday - and look for signs of ability to overcome our weaknesses by better maximizing our strengths - need to play tougher, and smarter.

I love this year's team and am excited for the rest of the season and for next year. So take what I'm about to say for what it is, knowing that I respect this current group of guys:

If the 2011-12 Bobcats played the 1994-95 Bobcats one hundred times, I'm not sure they'd win more than five games. With Boals. Without Boals. Either way. It was a different conference back then, plain and simple. Even that hobbled '95 Ohio team would run roughshod over this year's MAC, even without Boals.

I'll add this and take it a bit further. There hasn't been an Ohio team since the Stonerook/Adell/Whitehead/Reed/Flenorl squad (the year we beat 'Cuse) who would have given the Trent-era Ohio teams a run for their money. I remember Ed Sears coming back to practice when Brandon Hunter was at Ohio and was doing work. Ed abused him in the post. Just saying.

Unless there is something happening w/Belton - what we need for rest of this, and all of next year, is for our BIG('s) to play like MANZ

I'm taking the long view here. We're going to look great in some games and terrible in some games. Last night, it was mostly terrible. But that's not what this team has been most of the year. It will be better the next time.

While I've seen the "Get a BIGMANZ" post once too often (and that was 50 times ago) I would agree that with this entire squad coming back next year, that is in fact the missing peice of the puzzle.  No matter how good the 6'6" recruit coming in is, if we could find one JUCO inside presence guy that:

1.  Didn't hesitate, take 10 dribbles trying to back into his defender and then attempt an offensive move
2.  Attracts a double team
3.  Could play physical inside

that would be a team changer.  We got all the other parts on the squad.  I doubt those guys are sitting out there, you simply add water, and poof their in Athens.  But if you wanted to make a wish list for next year, that's what we need.  A 1-2 year 6'8-6'9 rent a player to make next year special.  Reggie's & Jon are nice parts and Baltic would benefit greatly from getting this type of guy--but we need a real inside guy, who's THE guy.

if this is 1995 I have a few questions-

- what happened to my hair line?
- what happened to my waste line?
- how fancy is this party, do I need to tuck in my denim shirt?
- why are there Zimas in my fridge?
- can I watch the OJ trial at you place tomorrow between classes?
- did Geno Ford take his girlfriend to Bob Evans for Valentines Day? (yes, he did.)

MY STATE. MY TEAM.

Genius is rarely a brilliant stroke.  Usually it's consistent recognition of the obvious and/or performance at a high level.

3. I am not worried about this.

1- Don't disagree with the Reggie statement.  Still needs to play like his size more consistently to me.  The Belton comment...that would be huge if he has eligibility and could simply give 15-18 mins a game at the 5 and be effective.  But that said, that's the kind of player we need.  We we're up tempo, the guys we have are great.  If we are forced to play half court, that's when we seem to see some struggles.

2 - I'll give you the free throws. The free throw shooting is what brought us back within single digits against Toledo.

3 - DJ  - I am a little worried about this, but maybe it's a reflection of the minutes he's playing too.  Last year he played, what, 36-37 mins/game?  This year, about 30-31?  That could be one factor.  Still, he's down about 3 apg.

*On The "BIGMANZ" commentary, I only have to add that I see the need for a true big man.  We have Ivo, Goard, Smith who are all similar sized, but quick big men.  But they aren't that big.  True big guys as size goes, we only have Reggie in terms of guys that get real PT.  We need one more - whether it comes from Jacobs, Belton, or a new face next year really doesn't matter, but it is a definite need.  Maybe that's why he's trying to work in Jacobs 5 mins a game now.

In taking the long view, what is the graduation situation at Akron, Kent and Buffalo?  I'm pretty sure Akron returns almost everybody.

Akron loses McClanahan and Cvetinovic.

Kent loses Porrini, Guyton, Jackson, Manns, and Greene.

Buffalo loses Filzen, Barnett, Robinson, and Watt.
