Just saw an article that pulled something from Kasich's State of Ohio speech about at a gigabit internet network that he is trying to get the state hooked up to, to help schools and businesses.  In this article it says Athens gets hooked in this October.

It looks like they're just updating the fiber-optic loop that already exists, which is good news for everyone, because that means that within the next year or two, we can hopefully get fiber optics to the home, which is the newest and fastest data connection.

Also of note, the US government recently gave the Appalachian area of the United States a similar grant to increase IT infrastructure around the region.  So yay fast internet!

TWC in Athens has had fiber-optic on the poles for about the last ten years. The connection from the pole to the house is coax.  I don't have a cable internet connection, but I hear it is very fast.
