I don't post much on the basketball board, so maybe this has been discussed, but I'd love to see a hanging scoreboard in the Convo. That got me to thinking about alumni donations to make it happen, and that led me to an idea about a Bobcatattack.com scoreboard. With new video technology, it would seem this concept is more practical than it once was.

I'd like to tap into the collective intelligence we have as users of this board--engineers, audio/video experts, fund-raising experts, lawyers, etc. Here is a potential outline for a plan:

1. Establish feasibility. The university may have already done this.
2. Establish cost. I have no idea what these things cost, which I admit could kill this idea immediately.
3. How many users on BA.com? What kind of per capita donation are we talking about?
4. Establish fund-raising plan and term.

I realize there are structural considerations for making this happen, but with lighter-than-ever video technology, I find it hard to believe the roof rafters could not support it. Even if they couldn't, I would also assume some measure of structural reinforcement could be retrofitted.

One potential payoff for BA.com: It is lettered with bobcatattack.com on all four sides. I would assume there would be additional advertising space on the board that would help fund the upkeep. That advertising might also be factored to help pay for the board itself.

As much as I like your idea we still have a decent amount of money still to raise for the Multi-Purpose Center.  That should be the top priority for fund raising right now.

I think you're looking at a number well into six figures and that's a pretty basic one.

Fiami's new score board was $700K....unfortunately I don't think we have enough regular users of BA.com to cover that cost...even if all the regulars gave $1,000, we wouldn't be anywhere close.  Now if the cost was around 100K, that might be manageable.

Funding for the new scoreboard came from Miami University through money set aside annually that is used to repair and upgrade facilities around campus. The cost of the scoreboard package was approximately $700,000.

Also, UB's new scoreboard(s) with control room, etc...the whole package was $2.4M

Good info. Thanks Ryan.

Unfortunately, since Miami was replacing an existing hanging scoreboard, the 700k price is probably too low for what we would need. On the other hand, Buffalo went all out. I'm not sure what the control room entailed, in terms of using an existing room or constructing something all new. Maybe a safe early assumption is 1.5 million?

Agree that the university's focus is on the IPF, but I would think this project could be added quickly if the overall cost is significantly less. We're talking under 2 million as compared to the IPF's 10-12 million?

I do believe it was on the radar and in the discussions as to what the Walter's "$2M set aside for Convo renovations" money would be used for...perhaps it is already in the works?

I'm no CPA, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night...

A $700K scoreboard, with a lifespan of 10 years, given Miami average attendance over a 15 game home schedule...

Each Miami patron will pay around $3 for the luxury of that scoreboard.

That Sucks.

If we're investing in a hanging board, it would be silly not to put in a control room somewhere to feed it.  The setup we have feeding the video boards now is laughably basic, and if you're going to go for a hanging board, I think you want to put live video and replay on it, not just the graphics we have sitting in the corner now.  This could also be the easiest way to package funding to upgrade the webcast with multi-cam production, replay, and a real scoreboard-integrated score bug with time and such, and it could (as many do) simply use an alternate output of the scoreboard show for streaming.

I agree Alex.

If I had the money, Powerball-ticket-in-hand-willing, part of my multi-million dollar donation would be earmarked for what you describe...not to mention feeding those normally power-off'd monitors at the concession stands as well.

I think we could put lots of those video majors to work with some hands-on experience running all of it.

Regarding a control room, what are the glass rooms for at the top of the Convo (are there two of them?), that appear to be almost always empty? Would one of those be a candidate?

If this company ( http://www.sideeffectsinc.com/) can give away free score boards and scrolling tables to high schools by getting local advertisers to foot the bill I don’t see why Ohio couldn’t do the exact same thing on a larger scale.

I believe the current scoreboards (football and basketball) were paid for by Pepsi. I thought it was a 10-year agreement but my memory may be failing me.

EDIT: Found the announcement although there is no time-period mentioned for pouring rights: http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/071503aaa.html

According to this Messenger article, there was a 10-year agreement that expires July 31st: http://www.athensmessenger.com/news/local/article_a75150fe-26f0-11e0-b470-001cc4c002e0.html?mode=story

The University is in the process of negotiating a new contract.  I believe athletics will be getting an adrenaline shot from that in the next 5 months.  I am wondering if they just use it to finish the indoor or if they have a few more gifts that will come through and will use it elsewhere.

Save your money and donate it to the IPF!  I don't "personally" see the need for a hanging scoreboard.  I've been at every state tournament at the Schott and rarely look at that hanging board.  I like our scoreboards with the video boards attached and closer to the floor.  I could see adding some up higher but not above the center of the court.  Improve what we have (video capabilities, etc).  Just my humble opinion.  I just don't care for 'em!

You wouldn't like our video boards from up top.  When we have crowds of 10K+ it becomes a problem.  You will have a very difficult time seeing our current video boards from the higher seats, especially at certain angles.  I agree IPF comes first though.

The video boards would be a lot more enjoyable if the "No Stand Zone" was actually enforced.  I have courtside seats and can't see the screen because someone is always lingering right in front of them.  I also wish they would leave them number of the last player that scored up there until someone else fouls or scores.  Is there a rule about it only being lit for 10 seconds then going blank?

Meh, I'd much rather have Convo improvements. But that's me.

The no-standing zone enforcement leaves much to be desired, but it doesn't even have to be a 10k crowd to cause problems.  My seat for Miami (2nd row behind mezzanine at half court) left the only board I could see obstructed entirely by the basket.

Interesting about pouring rights coming up for renewal.  That can be a lucrative deal.  Does anybody know if that is negotiated by athletics or the University as a whole?  I know Pepsi is very much favored all across campus.

Edit: Derp.  Read first, reply later.  Disregard my questions.

Personally, I don't see the need for a hanging scoreboard, but instead think it would be less expensive to simply move the scoreboards up to the higher reaches of the upper level behind the baskets.  That, or maybe in the corners up high. That would be better viewing of the scoreboard, and might allow the use of existing equipment.  No matter what the solution, there has to be a better solution without spending the 2.4 million Buffalo did, that's for sure.

As with many things, this can be done cheap or done right. To me, there's no point in spending ANY money on it if you aren't at least going HD at this point.
