Listened to some of Reghi and Mix's informed banter while calling BGSU's blowout win over NIU.
  • They absolutely gushed and fawned over Akron and Kent State.  Do you think they really feel that way, or are they "encouraged" to do that by STO and the production folks?
  • They think that BGSU is "close" to the Akron/Kent State level but would not be able to beat them head to head.  They think that BGSU would "match up nicely" with Ohio because Ohio isn't as good as Akron and Kent.
  • The pecking order in the East is Akron, Kent State, Buffalo, then Ohio and BGSU about equal, then Miami.
  • Based on their comments lately, they think Ohio's home blowout of Kent State was something of a fluke and doesn't really mean that much.
  • They grudgingly acknowledged that Ohio is "hot", but attributed that to "all those home games" they have been playing.
Gotta wonder if their lack of respect for Ohio is due to seeing Ohio play a couple of ugly games?  Just barely squeaking out wins over inferior competition?  They did say Ohio's win over CMU was "significant"...but didn't seem overly impressed.

Or does it have to do with toeing the company line in deference to Akron and Kent State?

How did they dismiss the Ohio thumping of Buffalo?  Or was it considered irrelevant since neither school is in NE Ohio?

I hope that these quotes as well as Mix's opinion of DJ find their way to the locker room.  When this team plays with an edge, they are unreal.

A conspiracy theorist who's familiar with JGuy's Twitter feed might argue that Reghi's line of thinking is somewhat similar to the MACs.

Now keep in mind *I'm* not saying that, I'm just saying that someone who subscribes to conspiracy theories might *think* that.

Only a couple of ugly games?

I get Akron.  Kent I figure is on the well eaned reputation of the program.  They are consistent winner.

BG beat us and made us look terrible doing so.

As for Ohio, well, we are an inconsistent team, indeed have had a slew of MAC home games, and we are very beatable (see BG game).  I wouldn't be surprised if we lost @ Toledo, @ Buffalo, @ EMU, @ Kent, and @ Miami.  Would you?

Seems to me they are telling it like it is.

And, now that DJ is injured, we are in even worse shape.

Would you like a match for your powder keg, Jeff?

Reghi has been working in Northeast Ohio since 1983. Mix is a Northwest Ohio guy (played at Toledo). They are doing a broadcast package on a Cleveland-centric network. So there's a source for bias.

Akron and Kent have been the class of the league for a few years. So there's an inclination to genuflect.

I feel like there is a certain level of  reverence given to the teams playing. I bet they never said NIU is simply a pathetic team anchored by Bjorn Borg look-alikes, either.

I can't explain the Buffalo stuff though.

How are we inconsistent?  We are 19-4, right?  Seems pretty consistent to me.  We had a bad week at the start of 2012.  Lost winable games against Akron and Louisville.  Both of those teams are good.  Now you have us losing 5 straight roadies?

For the love of goodness, this green kool-aid tastes pretty good, some of you need to take a sample.

I don't have a problem with it.  We have had a lot of home games...Take a look at the golf standings...Akron, Kent, Buffalo, Ohio, BG, Miami.  Now if we get a couple road kills this week, they will have to change their tune, and if they don't...Maybe I'll buy into any theories of bias or conspiracy.  Until now, they aren't too far off base really.

I meant games that were on STO.

Overall, I think Reghi and Mix do a pretty good job and I'm glad to have STO.  But I do think they go over the top in their obsession with Akron and Kent.

This is a prime example of someone paying attention to your own team and not really paying attention to others.  Kent is even more inconsistent than we are.  Buffalo lost to Miami and nearly lost to Toledo on Saturday.  Everybody's darling, Akron, needed a last second bucket to avoid losing to BG, got spanked by Buffalo and barely beat Miami. They also lost five of six earlier in the year.  And we hardly looked outclassed by the Zips when we were up there.  We may be inconsistent offensively but we have been very consistent on the defensive end.

I'd say OU Van has the most accurate interpretation of all thus far. Drink some of the green kool-aid if you're not already.  If you think it tastes a little different, that's because 19-4 hasn't happened around here in awhile.  I know it's hard to get used to, but try it.  Talking about a good season is a lot of fun.

I'll add (again from my perspective) that I think Mix only has one thing going for him - a decent broadcast voice.  Otherwise, he's average at best.  I think Reghi is pretty darn good, and adds some entertainment to the broadcast.  On another note regarding these two, they probably had to spend a lot of time talking about other teams in the conference because they were stuck broadcasting BGSU vs NIU.

Isn't it generally an accurate gauge of a team to take their 'outside' games?  To throw out their few best wins and worst losses.  Okay, so drop out kents.  But we have been consistent; we have been in every game.

We should beat Toledo.  Lose at EMU--don't think so.  'kron at home, beefs and kents away are tough.  Gotta beat redhawk, just gotta.

There are worse things than being consistent.  If we can find the top end of our game consistenly...

Reghi and Mix have seen us twice this year - at BG, where we threw up all over ourselves, and against WMU, where we played ourselves out of a lead in record time. Why would we expect them to be overly impressed? I don't buy the NE Ohio conspiracy.

Yes, I would be very surprised. I would be mildly surprised if we didn't go at least 3-2 in those games and I would not be shocked if we went 4-1. I also wouldn't be shocked if we went 2-3, but losing them all is out of the realm of possibilities.

Distance from Cleveland (MAC HQ) to:

Akron 39 miles
Kent 38 miles
Buffalo 189 miles
Athens 218 miles
BG 124 miles
Oxford 259 miles

Except for BGSUcks, it lines up remarkably well.

Dudes are right.  My post was too negative.

We definitely have been playing defensive consistently, so whoever mentioned that is correct.

I'm trying to embrace the "win-ugly" style.

No, I don't expect us to lose the rest of our road games.  But, I expect a few losses for sure.

And, I sure hope the hot shooting by Kellog and Offut the last few games is a pattern.  We go from ugly to pretty quickly if they can knock down shots.

I like Reghi even though he "Ohio U"'s me to death.

I swear sometimes I think us Bobcat fans would complain about cold ice cream.  I don't care what a couple regional broadcasters think about us. I don't care what the rest of the state of Ohio or what media types in Bristol, CN think about us. I care about being 19-4, and winning the next game. And then the next one. And the one after that.
