I admit it.  I woke up in the middle of the night and was still thinking about the BOBCATS.  One might say it was a nightmare.

Anyhow I think, like mentioned in a couple of other threads, that we could see a lot more zone the rest of the way out. Additionally, I suspect that we might see a lot more "good" fouls against the BOBCATS.  "Good" meaning that the basket doesn't go in.  Right now an "and 1" foul is a little better than 50% chance of turning 2 points into 3 points.  A "good" foul means a little better than 50% chance of getting 1point.  Over the course of a game like yesterday's that strategy is a pretty effective 1-2 punch. Add to that the tactic of slowing it down offensively and we are
look at some boring, ugly basketball if that is what our opponents choose to do.

I remain cautiously optimistic about this team and will be there rooting and cheering just like always.

GO BOBCATS

Our outside shooting woes were first exposed at BG in early January. Groce attributed that loss to a lack of "toughness". I think the loss was a lack of shooting ability and the lack of execution in attacking a zone.

Groce attributed the EMU loss as a lack of defensive effort. When you score ZERO points over the first TEN minutes of a D1 game against a team with an RPI that wouldn't rattle a poor Junior Varsity HS team, you have a scoring problem.

I think the lack of scoring/shooting and strategically executing against teams that play zone against us are far more relevant to our losses than "toughness" or "poor defense".

I've been saying for over the past month if I'm an opposing coach, I'm in a zone against us as soon as I get off the bus. We are probably one of the more athletic teams running the court and pushing tempo in the MAC. We've seen virtually all our MAC opponents whose coaches were paying any attention quickly shift to zone if they are falling behind us running man. We loss all continuity the minute anyone has gone zone on us and I think it has affected us at both ends of the floor and the frustration has shown.

Until someone on this team steps up as a zone buster or until Groce and company can figure out how to attack a zone when you are struggling with outside shooting, you will see a lot more of the EMU type outcomes.

Also, to add to our scoring woes, not only are we a struggling outside shooting team, we are not a good free throw shooting team. That can prove to be a LETHAL combination as we witnessed yesterday.

Wednesday's game against Bowling Green is enormous for our chances of earning a top-4 seed. There are five teams that are ahead of everyone else in the standings. Us and BG are the bottom two of those five.

Enormous. Huge. Gigantic.  Need three of the remaining five conference games to assure themselves of one of those byes.  I think they can do it.

Akron and Kent looming around the corner, and I don't feel very good about either one of those games after reviewing our last two outings......  Throw in the fact that BG has already beaten us once and they will roll into the convo with their zone defense.....If things don't improve quckly our season could be headed south in a hurry.  Please mail any zone offenses and shooting drills to Richland Ave. offices !

Pretty easy to attack 2-3 zone The ball has to go to the middle at the foul line  Attack the middle You might want to get to the heart of the zone That man (IVO) has to be able to knock down a 15 footer or pass to the wings for open looks. We use to set screens to get open looks on the wings. My problem is how long does it take before someone says enough of this nonsense (weave) we need to attack the zone and not pass  and hand the ball off until shot clock is at 10 seconds. We are suppose to be 9 deep with the ability to press all game long, instead we play to slowdown stye of whoever we play.Get out and run make the extra pass and knock down shots. It's pretty hard to set up a zone when you are running for your life.Geez, where's the tylenol?
