I'm curious what everyone thinks about Zeke as DPOY?

Its the easy choice, the cop out choice. Its the reason Dwight Howard wins NBA DPOY every year over perimeter shutdown guys like Tony Allen and Luol Deng.

Walter Offutt and Michael Porrini would have been great choices for DPOY but Zeke was the easy one.

How can you argue with it?  The guy changes every shot that comes his way.

We are Ohio fans, we don't know anything about defense.   Right Mr. Mix?

Kind of surprised Brown got it over Sullivan.

Brown's numbers were 11.9 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 5.0 apg, 3.4 topg, 1.1 spg, 39% shooting. His conference-only numbers were mostly slightly lower.

Sullivan average 10.3 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.6 topg, 0.8 apg, 43% shooting, including 46% on 3s. His scoring picked up a bit in conference play but his percentages were a bit lower.

I'd give Brown the slight nod. I think certainly both will be on the all-freshman team, along with McBroom and Nader. Those four are all over 10 points per game. After that, unless I'm missing someone, the next highest scorer is Western Michigan's Austin Richie at 5.7 ppg (but he shot 32 percent). I think a number of guys, including Stevie Taylor, could be in the mix for the fifth spot.

The surprise for me is Quincy Diggs.

I agree. Could have easily been Reggie Keely.

Quincy Diggs: 8.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 43.6 fg%,   Offensive Rating: 93.5

Reggie Keely: 9.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 52.3 fg%,   Offensive Rating: 98.0

Diggs wasn't even the best 6th man on his team.

Nick Harney: 8.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 52.4 fg%,   Offensive Rating: 102.2

Not to mention, Chris Evans of Kent State.

Chris Evans: 9.8 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 54.6 fg%,   Offensive Rating: 117.1

Its almost like they are just drawing names out of a hat sometimes with these awards.

The MAC has shown little snippets here and there the past year or two that make me think that the league is beginning to turn around its fortunes and return to its heydays of the 1990s. Looking at the list of top freshmen, however, makes me think that that is nothing more than wishful thinking.

I think it can certainly be argued that in some ways he's really not that great of a player, but just a tall one that has above average mobility for his height.  While I agree with your assessment that he changes a lot of shots, for a seven-foot guy in the MAC, it seems to me that ought to have better numbers overall, and should be a little more dominant.

I agree his offensive numbers should be better, but he's a beast on the defensive end.

Zeke is improving offensively though, I remember them showing the graphics in the game at Akron of his improvement from freshman year to junior year and it was trending well for him.  Now I'm not saying he is going to be an offensive force, but if you are really good defensively and at least a decently good option on the offensive end you will make a difference in any league.

Also, as far as sixth men:

Toledo's Curtis Dennis averaged 13 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 45 percent. He started only once in 22 games, but maybe the fact he missed nine (all non-league) games hurt him.

Chris Evans' numbers were 9.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 55 percent shooting.

Ball State's Jesse Berry averaged 9.4 points on 40 percent shooting. Not much else statistically.

Reggie's averages were 9.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 52 percent shooting.

Nick Harney: 8.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 52 percent shooting.

Diggs: 8.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.4 apg, 2.5 turnovers, 1.3 steals. Played more minutes per game (25.2) than all the others above except for Dennis (26.9).

I guess the voters liked Diggs' versatility, although it seems to me they struggle big when Abreu goes out and Diggs plays point guard.

What numbers? He's 16th in the country in block percentage.

Not saying that he's a bad defensive player.  But here's my perspective.  (WARNING! WARNING!)  He's so much taller than anyone else in the league.  And, is NBA drooling over him; is his defensive talent going to get him a career in the show?  Yes, he's developing.  But is he now there?

Someone please insert video of DJ busting the drive to the hoop over him in the tourney (two years ago, right?).

Draft Express lists Marshall as #26 among NCAA juniors. So, if he makes a leap next year, he's got a shot.
