I know what the play was last night and that is obvious, but for further knowledge, I would to try and explore the play a bit further. So originally, the scorer's table ruled a "tap-in" and awarded two points. Now, the tv announcers were talking about basket interference and two points. But if you had basket interference on a free throw, wouldn't you just award 1 point anyway? Just like if you took a ball off the top of the rim on a three point shot, the offensive team would be awarded three points. If the ball is off the cylinder, then gets tipped in, yes two points.

I am still in the process of looking up everything on the rule. Just something I was mulling around and thought maybe I could learn something.

Basket interference on a FT is worth 1 point.

How about another rule's clarification from last night's game. Does a thrown elbow that does not connect merit a technical foul?

I would say yes but in looking at the replay I'm not sure he was actually throwing an elbow. Smith had his shirt at the shoulder and it looked to me like he jerked his elbow trying to get Smith off of him.  It did signal the beginning of the pout-fest by Zeke though.

Marshall's a great talent but he's waaaaay too thin skinned.  He's got a bunch of growing up to do -- and only one year to do it (at least at the college level).

I'll take Jon Smith any day.  He plays a lot bigger than 6-7.  For a sophomore, he has plenty of poise and is hugely aggressive around the rim.  He just needs to work on FTs.

I remember watching a game where Devin Davis threw an elbow that didn't connect and he still got called for a tech.

Another interference (non) call could have made the final call inconsequential.  John Smith was blocked on a dunk very late in the game. But there's a photo on the ABJ's site (Ohio.com) that shows Akron's Quincy Diggs with his hand up and through the net and hoop - that should have been 2 points.

Here's the photo although it was actually Gilliam.  It's photo number 8.

The refs got the basket interference call on Reggie right. The Kron fans thought a technical should have also been assessed, but they're wrong.  Check out Rule 9, Section 17, Article 1.a. For basket interference during a free throw, one point is awarded. For goaltending on a free throw, it's one point and a technical. This was basket interference, and the shot went, so it's a moot point.

Yes C Money. Excellent point. A lot of people do not know the difference between basket interference and goaltending.

Damn, I thought I saw that on TV last night. I figured that since there was no call my eyes had gotten it wrong.

Outstanding photo!

IMO the refs went to the monitor to see if the ball was tipped and within the cylinder and that is the only thing they went to the monitor to view.  I don't believe the refs can spot something in the tapes that wasn't the original purpose of the monitor viewing.  Reg might have touched the rim but also witnessed in the viewing they could have seen Smith getting physically pushed completely out of the play from behind as he tried to box out.

Me too.  I said to my wife that I saw a hand go up through the net and that it should be basket interference or goal tending.  Like you, after it wasn't called I thought maybe I was seeing things or it was another example of a bad camera angle that made it look like the hand was up through the middle of basket but it really wasn't.  It happened so fast that I just wasn't sure.  I'm so glad to find out that I wasn't seeing things.  Funny how several of us at home saw this and the officials didn't.

The referees went to the monitor to check the clock.
