Not saying what they chanted is right, but Southern Miss went WAY too far in disciplining these kids. wow.

They chanted something stupid at a basketball game. Stupid chants like this happen all the time. For Southern Miss to make an example of those students is crazy in my opinion.

When you represent the school you are held ot higher standards. I have no problem with the discipline they received.

Perfectly justified in their punishment. They weren't just students at the game. They were there on the dime of the university and on the largest PR stage there is for a college did something grotesque.

The most upset with fellow Ohio fans I've ever been is when the OZone began chanting U-S-A! when Idhibi played for Buffalo. It was classless and made me sick to my stomach.

Well the problem with what they were chanting is they were chanting it at a player who was Puerto Rican.  Puerto Rico is a United States territory which means he would not need one to begin with.  So, in essence, they are going along with the "they all look alike" mode of thinking (example: "he looks mexican, therefore me might be an illegal immigrant").  The school was right in it's course of action.  Racism CANNOT be condoned and should not be handled with a mere slap on the wrist.

The opposing team sucks!

I see a conflict here. If a player can be involved in a physical altercation (see Cincinnati vs Xavier) and only serve a 1 or 2 game suspension why such a harsh punishment for someone that is completely irrelevant to the game? What would the punishment for a non collegiate fan be? Way overboard in my opinion.

That is to presume that the Cincy-Xavier penalties were just and set the appropriate standard.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Two players fighting during a physical game is not close to verbally abusing someone because they look "foreign" to you. Racism really has no place in civil society. I also agree with Brian that the jingoistic chanting by our own fans was disgusting.

In addition to what others have said, these were not just fans. They were representatives of the university.

Saw somewhere (JJ Huddle, perhaps) that this sort of thing took place in the Convo earlier this month during a h.s. tournament game.  More along the lines of racial slurs rather than nationality. Can't recall all the facts but I believe it was directed at players from Portsmouth H.S. Can't recall the offending high school student body fan base.

I will not comment on the politically intolerant, close-mindedness which gives rise to these things.

Just for the record, I completely agree that racism and intolerance is wrong and should not be accepted in today's society, and the culprits should definitely be punished. I was simply trying to compare one of the more recent "slaps on the wrist" handed down by the NCAA. My apologies if I came across the wrong way.

Sorry, my intent of this thread was not to get into a deep discussion about racism or free speech, especially this week. My intent was to show the ramifications of what can be yelled at games. I know our 110 and OZone members are generally respectful, but I would hate for something to happen where it put our university in a bad light and/or a student losing a scholarship/suspended over something they can control.

In the heat of the moment, it's easy to start yelling something to try to be funny, and in a crowd mentality, it's easy to join in. But think first.

You're right. Fighting is worse. And it wasn't two players, it was a lot more.

Portsmouth was playing another Scioto County School in the Convo. Here's a link:

I am unaware if there were any repercussions to the offending students.

Ah yes, Gallia, remember the good old days when you could be openly racist toward somebody and there wouldn't be any consequences? Just like the days you could shoot and kill someone just because of the color of their skin without people calling for your arrest.

i personally am very intolerant of racism in any form.  Further, I think that what these students said was stupid beyond belief.  However, I think the reaction of the university was way over the top.  I think the students involved should have been called on the carpet and told how insensitive their remarks were and how ignorant they were being, since citizens of Puerto Rico don't need green cards.  The fact that they were representatives of the university does require some action on the part of the university, but I do think they turned this into a PC circus instead of using this unfortunate event as a teachable moment for the students involved.

What's making this a "PC circus" as you put it? These idiots said something idiotic, and they got in trouble for it. You have the right to say idiotic things, but you don't have the right to a scholarship. Simple cause and effect if you ask me. They embarrassed their university, and their university punished them for it. Case closed. I love how the phrase "PC" gets thrown around as though it's somehow wrong to call things like they are. More wrong, even, than the initial act of stupidity and racism. This WAS a teachable moment for these clowns. They got taught a very important lesson - that there are and should be tangible consequences when you say racist things.

That's not what I meant. Students say stupid things. It's one thing to make them apologize and suspend them. I just think this is a little severe. As for PC, I do believe it is completely out of control in this country. Everyone has to be so careful with every word and action or they will be labelled as a hater, a racist or something along those lines. PC is suffocating honest conversations in this country.

My last comment on this thread. Back to the joy of the Sweet 16.

How about those people just stop being racist? Wouldn't that be a better outcome than whining about the supposed PC police?

I guess I I lied about being my last post. So do you consider when students in a student section chant USA towards a foreign player that it would be considered racist? I also remember when our student section would chant "chia" at a Miami player with a very low hairline on his forehead ? (which was hysterical I might add) Is that discriminating against people with bad hairlines? I agree what they chanted was distasteful. But where doe it end?

Yes, yes I do. At the very least, it's extremely ignorant. Beyond that, it smacks of immature nationalism. And beyond that, it's at least making a tacit claim that those doing the chanting are in some way inherently better than the target. I'm guessing it wasn't a mixed-race group chanting USA.

And beyond all of that, how pathetic is it that THAT'S how we're attempting to show our pride as a nation? We used to be the country everyone looked toward because of our welcoming views and helpful hand toward other nations. In past wars, opposing soldiers would surrender to us instead of fighting further because they knew how well and civilized we'd treat them. But now? We can yell USA at a foreign-looking player because it makes us feel better about ourselves. Pretty sad.
