Maybe this has been discussed elsewhere, but it seems they're using a robotic camera for the internet feed from the Convo.  The camerawork is awful; they can't keep up with the action and about a quarter of the time the camera's fixed on the wrong end of the floor for ten or 15 seconds.  Seems like they have one person trying to do everything -- camera work, graphics and audio.  As a grad of the RTV school, I expect better from OU.

I've seen what I think is the camera at the games, and it is (to my knowledge) always run by a person. Not sure what's so hard about moving one camera back and forth to keep up with the action??

The camera work is slow and the shot is limited.  I am of 2 minds...my first thought (and I keep coming back to it) is that its a better than nothing.

My other thought is around that whole OU is a laboratory and a training ground for life in the real world.   I am wondering aloud why they don't try to add a couple of cameras and actually let the students take a shot at producing this thing. What a great experience for some RTV students to call games.  It seems like a win-win to me.  I say set up the cameras, get a director and a crew and do this thing.  I'd think the WOUB guys would be all over this. Especially with THIS team.  Alumni from all over the country are going to be interested in seeing them as their success builds.  Great advertising for the school.

I have to think that there would even be a few advertising dollars available to support it...I'd pay for a subscription.

I don't know who was behind it, but I remember that when I was in college ('01-'05), specifically during my two years in the dorms ('01-spring '03) a number of the home hockey games were televised on one of the campus cable channels. It wasn't great stuff, but it had a couple of cameras and what not. I'm not sure if they still do this, but its an idea.

As for the RTV students...I really like Russ and Rob's calling of the games. No need to risk this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkM56aBo_AI (apologies if he's a regular BobcatAttack reader)

I'd hope they'd simulcast it with Russ and Rob - but in all fairness - they should get a bump in pay....its only fair.  Now that being said and in light of the whole Ohio is a laboratory thing...some of the kids who do The Sports Fan on WATH get to be pretty decent eventually and could probably do a half decent job.

It seems to me that last year students were running the camera.  Several times they would try to get artsy and pan the crowd after a made basket instead of following the action.  What we have is better than nothing, but it's not nearly as good as some of the others around the MAC.  Buffalo, as I recall, has a good video stream.  I don't mind the one camera; it saves us from artsy directors who needlessly cut from camera to camera.  I just wish they'd keep up with the action and get the entire half-court in the frame.  When they're on the basket nearest the Ohio bench, they don't get the right corner in the shot.

There was a student production of home basketball games on WOUB II as well.

I was going to ask the same question. In the past, it has always looked like video. Now it looks like a Skype session. I was watching the EMU game last night and their video is much better than Ohio's. In listening to the radio broadcasts, it sounds like there have been major technical difficulties at the Convo. Maybe they are impacting the feed?

The production seemed to be better today, although there were still some issues with following the action, like during the technical foul shots; the camera was on players mingling at midcourt while the shooter took the FTs.  There have been issues in the past with internet speeds and access around the Convo so maybe that's why the first three games have had occasional streaming issues.
