From those who were there: What was the atmosphere and enthusiasm..intimidation? Was it subdued during the first half....rabid during the 2nd half? How many students vs. other/old people?

Where's the band?!

Although it may have been a bit smaller, the crowd was probably louder than the Gary Trent/Miami game IMO. Pretty even mix of students and fans, I would say. O Zone seemed louder and more coordinated. Not sure if anyone has a picture, but the giant banner held up by the O Zone pregame was very, very cool.

All in all, a fun day all around. Couldn't ask for a better start to the season!

In the 25 plus years I have followed OHIO basketball, it was the best opening crowd along with noise level that I've experienced! Nice to see..
On the other hand in the row behind me the Ohio student and his dad getting to their seats at halftime and dad seeing the new Sweet Sixteen banner and saying "WOW " they made it that far last year. I was sort of dumbfounded and kept look and comment to myself!!

I bought some of the $6 "cheap seats" since the $20 and $12 varieties were sold out by the time I confirmed with my father ('70 OU alum) that he could actually come with me. We were about half way up the upper bowl.

The entire row behind me was made up of current OU students and their fathers for Dad's weekend.

The conversation directly behind me between father and daughter went like this "So, how many games have you been to? Oh, this is my first one dad. I think we're supposed to be pretty good or something, I dunno." At halftime the father remarks "Hey this is fun, we're getting to see a pretty close game!". About half-way through the second half the father says "Yeah I guess this team IS pretty good." Followed by the daughter putting down her iphone and responding "Yep. Alright well have you seen enough dad? We're going to win. I need to get back so I can get ready. There's a bunch of us going out tonight."

And they got up and left.

I'd like to chalk it up to first game of the season. Chalk it up to a really nice warm day outside. Chalk it up to people still being in football mode. Chalk it up to lots of dads in attendance. But to me, that crowd (outside of the 110 and students) was pathetic. I've seen louder crowds at Wright State and that's sad.

Also, I only attended away games (Miami/WSU) and our neutral court games (Cleveland/Nashville) last year, but I now agree 100% with all the others that complained about the crazy promotions during EVERY play stoppage. Good lord the PA announcer even got EXCITED about it. "Alright Convo, there's a STOPPAGE IN PLAY!" followed immediately by half a dozen grad students running on the court and somebody speed-reading through the next
contest brought to you by *insert random company here*.

It's the nature of the beast when it comes to fund raising today, I get it. I'm not complaining about aiding any would-be donors to help support our program. But good grief does it have to be literally EVERY stoppage?

I miss a good old fashioned tv timeout with the cheerleaders on the court and the band playing. Period.

You answered this yourself in the beginning of your post. Not everyone who goes to a game loves basketball, and it's probably not a bad thing to cater to people who go to a game being entertained in a broad sense of the word. There are those in attendance who love watching OU basketball (hello, many of us on this board). There's also those in attendance who like OU basketball or are there with someone who likes OU basketball and doesn't really give a flip about the sport of basketball. I can tell you that was probably the case for the father of 3 children under the age of 8 (specifically the children, not the dad) who was sitting in front of us at the game. His kids were paying varying degrees of attention to the game, but the were definitely excited for the tire roll, and the kids playing dressup on the court, and especially anytime the promo people were throwing things into the stands.

It's not a bad thing to entertain the non-basketball junkies in the crowd if we want to push our attendance levels to the next level.

Which is why we will never again hear a complete rendition of "Long Train Runnin" in the Convo - they only get the last minute of a break to start it.................and I for one think that Really Sucks................

I'm sure that no team sells out unless some number of not-really-interesteds are in attendance.

It is ENTIRELY appropriate to turn to someone who says 'I hear they're supposed to be pretty good' and say such as "Last year we went to the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA's and every player from but one is back from that team--plus a couple of new guys who should be quite good have been added. These guys are one of the top teams in the nation."

Say it in a nice way. Some people honestly aren't aware for whatever reason...and might appreciate the better insight on what they're missing.

Am I the only one who thought the crowd was, for lack of a better term, weak?

I've not been to a game since the 2009-10 season and I've got to say I was quite disappointed in the crowd noise level and enthusiasm throughout. The band was more into it than the O Zone, but I am sure there is someone here who will tell me why that happened. And I thought this was supposed to be a sellout? There were PLENTY of open seats everywhere.

It was a great opener for sure, but let's not make this out to be what it wasn't.

Big props to Ted Thompson for the tickets, btw.

The crowd was pretty lame, IMO. Not as loud/big as the Miami game last year.

The word "sellout" implies every seat being sold. I believe that was the case, except for what they held back for students/dads the day of the game. I think the lack of a 13K sort of crowd was due to...1. A lot no-shows, either who had season tickets or bought the $1 tickets and 2. Less students/dads on gameday than expected.

Either way, it was probably the 2nd biggest crowd over the last 20 years. Nothing to sneeze at!

Agree, RSBobcat. While I didn't have my stopwatch out during this media timeout, I also thought we got the short version from the 110. I've long believed that there's not a more electric moment in the Convo during a Bobcat basketball game than the final media timeout of a close game in front of a large crowd with the 110 playing Long Train Runnin'.

Additionally, I know of a few students who left Athens for the long weekend (no school Monday), which also might have been a factor in yesterday's crowd.

I know. Long Train is longer than media timeouts unless it's an NCAA or ESPN game. They have longer timeouts.

As I said in another thread, I thought the crowd was weak. Not too many standing and cheering. I had one douche who was in the wrong seat next to me, get up with his girl during the starting line-up because he said I was "one of those guys" which meant I get into the game and cheer. Hopefully the crowds do get better and the wife and I are already looking to see the next game we can make.

When you sell $1 and $2 tickets for an afternoon game and it happens to be a very nice weather day, it isn't much of an investment to burn by not showing up.

Before the game, I predicted on here that the crowd would be rather tepid. It usually is for Dads Weekend. I thought the crowd enthusiasm was OK for Dads Weekend.

Crowd was indeed on the weak side, which was to be expected for Dad's weekend. But what concerned me was despite the mega 110 taking up one more full section than usual, plus Dads taking up seats...that the Ozone didn't exactly look like it was busting out at the seems. The non-110 half of the bleachers looked Ozone-like, but the sections behind the bleachers looked "semi-interested student" like. I would hope Ozone turnout would be at an all-time high...and it was an odd weekend with Dads/110/etc...so I'll reserve judgement until things get a little more normal.

I also thought the 110 halftime show was kind of disappointing...Short and not all that exciting.

I'm not going to complain about the crowd at all. We always see a large, yet quiet crowd for Dad's weekend. I expected that. Also, the students did a nice job during the game, especially the 110. Having the entire band there makes the cheering more fluid because they are very into the game and well organized. The rest of the lower section of OZone did a nice job. Aside from the banner hanging pregame, we had a beautiful day outside, an unexciting opponent, several good college football games going on and only about 10 minutes of really exciting basketball. I am not expecting a really large, loud, intimidating crowd until the Marshall game.

I liked the new banner covering half of the OZone even though I couldn't tell what it said until I saw the pictures. Also, the 110 show was fine, but they were limited in time and court size. A football field is a better venue for them.

GREAT crowd for a November basketball game at the Convo, but not the packed, raucous affair that one might expect with the game having been touted as a "sellout."
