The Good:
  • 31.3% TO rate for Portland. Delicious.
  • 69.7% defensive rebounding rate. For a team as tall as Portland, that's acceptable.
  • 75% at the line. I'll take that every time.
The Bad:
  • 5 turns for DJ. A couple of those (at least) are ones I wouldn't expect him to make later in the year. Chalk it up to first game anxiousness.
  • 4 fouls for Walt. He's gotta cut down.

THE (SEMI) UGLY

I would really like to see Ivo cut down on the fade away off balance one legged 17 footers. He has great moves and footwork around the rim, use them.

Flat out accountability

Bad BBIQ

Fade away jumpers outside 14 feet. GUys were admonished here for saying anything last year but it should be evident that when he is going to the bucket he is dynamite. Standing outside and throwing up fades that come off the palm flat and with abnormal rotation due to poor lower body mechanics.......My coach aslways said. "son if you are that wide open out there the other team must have a reason"

TO be honest after 1 for many in the first half and Christian makes a key substitution to get shooters on the edges to close out the half.....we get a 3 ball from the deep corner in front of the opposing bench. EEEEESHHH. I got a feeling that got fixed as he came out the second half and attacked the bucket.

GOod ball movement second half . WIll be interesting to look at Tempo as this team was recruited and  built to push the pace. Ivo had a couple of rim runs with ensuing flushes that illustrated that. Stevie was solid defensively, Kellog en fuego and Keely beasting up. I thnk a couple of DJ's turns were just communication with cutters.

I thought he did a very good job in the second half of running the offense as well.  He has a tendancy to run around a little bit but he played with a little more purpose.

This team has a pretty good chance to lead the whole nation in TO margin.

I'm not disagreeing on Ivo, but I remember watching a sports science on Dirk regarding his fade-aways.  At Ivo's height, very few will be able to get their hands up there....

I've seen crazier things happen.

The difference being that Dirk's fadeaways are usually contested, whereas Ivo naturally fades away on every jump shot, even the uncontested ones.

Gotta love a guy who look at shot mechanics and make an informed comment.

If JC can get Ivo to change his ways, he'll prove his worth as a coach. I never saw Groce take an issue with Ivo's form. Problem is, Ivo loves doing it and practices it that way. Good luck getting it to change...

If that's the case, Kadeem Green will start to cut into his minutes when he becomes eligible in a few weeks. I love an attacking Ivo, but Green's gonna get minutes at someone's expense, and if we see the passive-18-footer version of Ivo, I think that choice get's easier.

No. I was trying to be deliberate with what I was saying. I can't say that he didn't take an issue with it, but I can say I never saw it or heard about it. And I very much wanted that to happen, as Ivo's jumpers drive me nuts. I can't speak to approval or disapproval by Groce. All I know is that's what his jumper is whether it was ignored by previous coaches or attempts to improve it took place.

Yeah, that too.....

did not come across that way at all, good to know.

Pretty sure you know the importance of mechanics .......and could probably apply to say....tennis service.

Sorry. I thought the first sentence set up the second, but it looks like I failed in that regard.

As long as we are alerted to mechanics and shot selection may as well get some early season insight for all the new or returning fans that may want to see some finer points on the subject. I know there are a lot of young kids in the COnvo these days that can benefit.

There are some mechanical nightmares that make shots like Paul Piercy but i would be wont to change much as long as it is going down. Good stuff in here http://www.focusedshooter.com/pro-shooting-system/the-1-shooting-system/ or go to swish22.com both are excellent resources for folks who want to learn more. I tend to have listened to most of the techniques and find the Proshot stuff easily reproduced and makes marginal guys very accurate. I am not sure how Hoover ended up in Athens but for those of you with young kids you wont find anything better or cheaper and ......for some odd reason his nationwide presence found it's home moved from Cali to a little barn in SEO.

Updated statage:

We are up to #24 in Kenpom.
We lead the nation in turnover % at a ridiculous 33.6%  (VCU led the country last year at 27.3)
We are second in the nation is steal % at 18.8%.
We are 11th in effective FG% on offense and 26th on defense. That's a nice combination.
Even though we often lament not having a shot blocker we are 59th in block % at 12.5%.
We are 30th in 3 pt shooting
We are 13th in 2 pt shooting
We are 48th in FT shooting

Essentially, as we know from watching, our defense has been really, really good and our offense has really benefitted.

Last night, Ball State had a O-PPP of 0.71, Indiana 1.32. That's an efficiency margin of 61.4!
