Be Thankful for OHIO...

I live in Dayton, and had the oppourtunity to go to my first UD game last night. I have lived here for about 6 years but this was my first game. We sat in the 200 level seats, 5 rows up (think about the seats behind the OZone) right in line with a basket. Great seats, great facility, great place to watch a game, but the atmosphere was AWFUL!!!

The students there were not loud.
There weren't that many there to bein with.
The band was awful, I mean just awful
The only time the crowd of 12,000+ got excited was in the last two minutes when Dayton started a comeback against Weber State - after the fact they were up 5 at half.
The only good quality about UD Arena is they do sell beer and not too expensive - $5.75

As I sat there with a rather big UD fan, I thought to myself, wow, I just didnt realize how good, loud, and how much of an impact the Ohio crowd had. I was going to yell and cheer for UD (I have my Master's from there) but I thought I would get in trouble or something....

So, going along with the A-10 talk, I would love for OU to join the A-10 in Hoops and show the crowd how a fan base is SUPPOSED to cheer.

Just my two cents, made me even prouder to be a Bobcat.

Evidently where called the best fans in the mac. Maybe we can be called the best fans in the Mid-Majors? We got some work to do (Creighton, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Wichita State, Xavier, etc...)

I agree, the fan base is there, but the problem I saw is that the fan base is over the age of 40, and a lot of people left early to beat traffic.

No doubt about it, the support is there in the city, and surrounding areas but I just couldnt believe how quiet it was in there.

Maybe it was the day, the opponent, or the team, but I was not impressed.

I've only been to 1 or 2 games there, but UD arena is beautiful. It was too long ago to remember anything about the quality of the crowd, but I can say that their cheerleaders were much hotter than OHIO's were at the time (winter 2001-02). I can say this confidently because I was sitting in the first or second row under one of the baskets (a friend of mine in the UD band sneaked me in for free) and spent most of the game looking up at the cheerleaders.

In fact , I think that this home court advantage is one of the reasons why UD's OOC schedule at home is getting worse every year, much like the case with OUr basketball team....no one wants to play there because even on a down year, a UD team at home is still a top 40 and very dangerous team to play. Now as far as the average fan age of about 40...this is most likley linked to where you where sitting....those seats you had are "GOLD" in the dayton area....the lower bowl, except for the student section, is filled with people that probably dont have much of a direct link with the university anymore, (families of family that originally had the tickets when the arena was built or even corporate seats). I have heard how when the original ticket holders stopped wanting to use their lower bowl seats they either just get transferred to another family member or even in the ultimate case, get left to family members in wills after a death.

Any new grad or younger "true" fan that wants to get season tix for a rising family will be relegated to the 400 section (if they want anything close to center court), and they will stay there for many milenia before getting the chance to move down.

PTGrad: I'm sure you are correct, and that makes a lot of sense. But I was just disappointed in the student section, and made me even happier to be a Bobcat because even our Winter Intersession games were a lot louder than that.

As for the cheerleaders, well, they have taken a turn for the worse. Not much to look at there.

I echo the same sentiment as well, I was going in there thinking it was going to be a rocking atmosphere. It was a beautiful place to watch a game, but the atmosphere was lackluster at best.

I grew up in dayton back in the 60's. Back in the glory days that place was rocking. I remember watching a couple of games there and it was great. Even saw a college all star game there(marvin barnes was the mvp) and a couple of globetrotter exibitions. Now the old UD fieldhouse, that was the best place I ever witnessed a basketball game. Biggest thing that has happened in Dayton was when they played UCLA in the 67 championship. What a magical run led by Don May. My how things have changed since donaher was coach and the great team led by chapman in 84.That team gave the national champion hoyas one of the toughest games that year. Someone mentioned the Notra Dame games back in the day. 74 game against the irish was a great place to be. The rivalry with cincinnati was quite fierce back then also. Oh 74 was the year the Flyers took UCLA and BIll Walton to three overtimes. I remember fondly watching that game on late night tv. Dayton missed a foul shot at end of regulation that would have won it. Sound familiar? Dayton also hit a 2 point shot with 10 seconds left in one of the ot's that would have won but donaher called a timeout right before the shot was put up. Sorry for reliving my younger days.

P.S. I agree about Welcome Stadium. If you ever want to see the worst college stadium in Ohio that is the one. Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster aren't much better but with the close of the rubber bowl nothing else compares. I have seen just about every one in Ohio now so I know.

Pardon my ignorance, but what college team uses Welcome Stadium as their home stadium? I thought its mainly used for dayton area and state playoff HS-Football games (and regional track meets).

EDIT: I just looked it up. I forgot that UD plays their games there. Of course, UD plays non-scholarship I-AA football...so yeah, they're going to have a poorer stadium...in this case, literally a high school stadium

tiffin and findley both play in high school stadiums and they are both far better then Welcome Stadium. Also the one in Tiffin just hosted a d3 playoff game because the one on Heidelberg's campus although beautifull is small.

Love reading about those days, although I look at them through the eyes of an ND fan. ND v. Dayton was a great yearly matchup and reminds me of the Paxson brothers, one at each school. Or how about the annual home-and-home series between ND and UCLA. Of course the Ohio University tie-in to all of this is Austin Carr scoring an NCAA tourney record 61 points against the Cats in Dayton.

I remember the paxon brothers well. They were from Kettering Alter High School. I went to Kettering Fairmont East (brady hoke's high school) so although they were a couple of years younger then me I still remember watching them play in high school. Both in person and tv. Ah the austin carr game. The scary thing about how good he was that day was they didn't have 3 point shots back then. Since he was a guard it would be interesting if someone has calculated how many he would have scored with the three point line. I remember watching that one on tv. Dayton has hosted a lot of memorable ncaa tournament games through the years. The one I remember most was in 1970 in the regional finals when Jacksonville State with Artis Gilmore defeated Kentucky 106-100. Kentucky fans alive then and still alive now still don't like to talk about the little team from the south defeating the adolf rupp coached wildcats.(oh western kentucky beat them the next year also.) Kentucky had the great Dan Issel on that team. One of the best college teams never to win the title. Gilmore and Issel went on to play together with the Kentucky aba team. One of the best pro teams and most people have never heard of them.

A mid-major draws a crowd of 12,000+ against Weber State on a weeknight? And we're supposed to be glad we're not Dayton?

I would love to have the crowd support Dayton gets. There's a reason the NCAA chooses Dayton as the site of all those play-in-games.

And as much as I like Austin Carr the basketball player, I'm of the belief that he is one of the worst color commentators in sports (for the Cavs on FoxSports Ohio).

I'll never forget the couple of times my brother (ND alum, 1972) and I drove up to Richfield Coliseum to see the Cavs with Carr and Gary Brokaw play the Buffalo Braves with John Shumate and Adrian Dantley, my all-time favorite basketball player. Speaking of ND basketball, did anyone notice Monti T'eo lead the student body cheering section last night as the Irish beat UK?

well anytime kentucky gets beat it is a good night. Also Oscar Robertson was a pretty bad commentator also.Austin is pretty bad though but he helped make the cavs exciting back in the 70's up their in richfield(where ali had his first title defense in a cornfield).
