I just wanted to point out a few things to show the current state of MAC basketball....

Just a few MAC attendance numbers to throw out there...  11/24 EMU vs Madonna (wow) 552, which was only 30 more than the Ohio's Women's basketball game vs Duquesne on 11/25 (522)

NIU vs UIC: 947

BG vs Detroit 1,661

Ohio vs St. Bonnie:  6,389 <---- YAY!
I'm sure there are plenty more embarrassing MAC attendance numbers out there.

If you would like to post your local HS Boys basketball attendance numbers from last season to compare, please do.

I'll tell ya where we'll go. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talkin' bout a little place called... ATHENS.

Marygrove at WMU: 1,896

Kent has been below 2,000 the past two home games.

Wow, that's crazy for Kent. They've typically had a good following (MAC-wise, at least).

Can't be shocked at the other ones. Outside of OU, Toledo, Akron and Kent - most MAC schools just do not support their basketball programs.

That's why I have encouraged leaving the conference in Basketball (only) and joining the A-10.

Buffalo draws some decent crowds at times.

I agree about the A-10.  It would be fun to be in that league.

Ohio to the A-10 is picking up steam as the most preferred (and most realistic) path for the future.  I've been calling for it for years...i would especially enjoy being in with Dayton and Xavier.  I would add that I think it would be for all sports, not just basketball.  Except for football of course, which that conference aligment is so jacked up anyway...and we could still be football only in the MAC (if they'd keep us).

A question for people who know this stuff way better than I do. Let's say we join the A-10 for all sports except football, and the MAC doesn't let us stay for football. What's the impact on the bottom line? I assume A-10 basketball money is much better than MAC basketball money, so what would the football team have to clear for the move to be financially neutral?

A problem with this is the total number of schools in the A-10.  They may be reaching the saturation point.

Who we'd be aligned with in football could kill any deal like this.  I can't see the MAC allowing us to stay in for football only.  I think Ohio football could affiliate with some other group in this current environment, but would it be acceptable financially, geographically and competitively?

Main reason I'd like to affiliate with the A-10 for basketball is the interest on those campuses for basketball.  They generally draw well and people care about hoops.  Competitively, it's a step above the MAC.  It would be easier to get at larges from the A-10.

Dayton and Xavier would be tremendous games for us.  Duquesne would be as close as Akron/Kent currently are.  Butler in Indy would be reasonably close.  I get all giddy just thinking about it.

By "picking up steam", do you mean among the posters on this board?

Hah, you beat me to it. I was wondering where the "steam" was coming from myself lol.

Yes, that is precisely what I mean...nothing more.  And I completely agree on fan interest...It would be fun to be in a conference where the other teams in the conference also have fans that enjoy their teams...rather than a conference where the average student/alumni knows nothing about their school's teams.

And to your point of the number of teams in the A-10...I am not suggesting they expand beyond their current 16 to let us in...I am just hoping the conference shuffling trickles down to where we get plucked to replace a departing Temple or Umass or something.  You would have to think we would be on the short list if suddenly the A-10 finds themselves looking for a replacement.

Honestly, I don't really care what conference affiliation we end up in football....I don't think it should hold us back from joining a great fit like the A-10 for other sports.  It is hard to tell what will happen from here in the football conference realignment, but I think somewhere along the way we could find a decent home.

Besides the A10 being full in hoops with their recent additions, football is the tail that wags the dog here. It won't happen.
