I think he just doubled his win total at Bryant.

He has four years left on that contract. They're stuck with him no matter what happens.

TOS always owned ACC teams.

I'd disagree with that. Sure, the postseason wins are great, but we were right in it with a Florida team and easily could have won that game as well. Regular season wise, he did just as much as Groce. Troutman, Tillman, Williams all up there with any talent pulled in by Groce (pretty sure Troutman was a top 70 recruit out of HS). Let's not forget he's the reason Tommy Freeman and DeVaughn Washington, among others, were on that 2010 team.

Let's face it: regardless as to whether he truly deserved it, O'Shea was a win over Florida from most likely jumping ship to a promotion instead of the fate he ended up having. That was a Florida team that also won the next two NCAA championships as well.

Yes, we are in better shape currently, but O'Shea gets way too little credit. His teams were nearly unbeatable at home.

It's that "other place" you play games that always got to his teams.

Kidding aside, he wasn't nearly as bad as we all make him out to be. There's a lot of schools in the country that would have been happy with those results. And, to be honest, JG didn't have any better regular seasons. There were still head-scratching road losses at the likes of EMU, BGSU, etc. And we still hovered around the 3/4/5 seed range. But postseason, JG certainly takes the cake.

Even as bad as Boston College was, I have to say that was an unbelievable win. He's still playing with a roster of 50% Division II players. He does OWN the ACC!

Many seem to forget that TOS had some real geographic restrictions (imposed somewhat as I understand it by his wife, but also his own proclivities) when he left Athens.  He was going to go East to somewhere in the general New England area or within spitting distance of it.  If he had beaten Florida, he would not have left Athens for any old BigTime offer.  He was a very strange bird in that regard.  He really looked at his current gig as a semi-dream job, because of its location so near his roots.

Edit: If offered I could see him taking the BC job in a heartbeat.

TOS seemed like a perfectly nice guy who did a perfectly nice job. That said, he never seemed happy with being in Athens, and he never seemed to believe he could win a really tough game. It’s therefore no surprise that he was never really happy in Athens and his teams seldom won big games. I was at the Kansas game in Kansas City during his last season at the helm. To me, that’s the perfect punctuation mark on his tenure. Coming off a very nice road win against Maryland, TOS and his team were run off the floor by the Jayhawks. From the warm-ups until the final buzzer, no one wearing green on that bench – least of all TOS – seemed to think they had a shot. Yes, Kansas was obviously better (they ultimately became national champions), but TOS might as well have forfeited. That’s how I remember TOS: The sense that, whether he was in the Convo or visiting a difficult opponent, he seemed to be thinking, “why am I here?”

Excellent points and true.  I guess what I was attempting to say was during the TOS years I, personally, never felt that game-time adjustments would pull us through the tight games. The talent level on the floor had to get it done. The last year with Groce and from what I've seen from Christian (although to date no true challenges), my confidence level is significantly higher that in-game adjustments will be made that will yield positive results. We now have the complete package.

NOt to cherry pick but Rhodes and Kuwick were the reasons those guys were on that team. They had to appeal to other head coaches (Skinner et al)  to convince TOS on his way out the door to Newport that they were worth taking a chance on....for the record the guys you mentioned in the line before that were also KU and RHodes convincing him to take them also......but he did find Bert and Ernie....those were his recruits for sure.

We never talked to TOS till after Tommy had committed to Rhodes in Vegas....then we got a complimentary conference call live from RI.

At least you can work with actual facts.

That same guy who battled to get PT his frosh year because he was "an acquired taste" turned out to be pretty tasty for the next three years. NO telling where that 3 pt record would be had he got run....the MAC record was only 13 away.

I was in the group that begged for Tommy to play more his frosh year. Never understood it.

I was too, especially over the BW3 and Allen Hester duo...but let's not get all "Michael Jordan Hall of Fame Induction speech" here.  He and Devo were freshmen on a team that had Leon, Tillman, Bubba & M Allen.  That's a tough lineup to crack for a freshman.

no speech here....and no wishes for anything more than the facts to be accurate.  It is what it is and that rotation with Bert and Ernie turned out to be self fulfilling (got us Groce)  from the git go. Kid  never saw himself as anything but a self described "glue guy". ..and he fully expects Kellogg to shatter that record this year.

Devo, Asown, KVK, Tommy, Tillman, Allen and Orr absorbed the coaching change and had a huge hand in the recruiting process and campus hosting of the upper classmen who are currently carrying this team. Those guys are Ku, and  Rhodes guys and still keep in close contact with both of them. I don't think I have ever heard any of them talk about contact with TOS.

I remember us getting blowed out by Kansas and 24 came and hit a long ball or two and seemed to be the only one who wasn't somewhat cowed by the level of comp plus didn't the ex-groce take a while to understand that guy could play, sorta had him on the bench in the beginning if I recall correctly.

The head coach surrounds himself with his staff. Regardless of which person on his staff brought them in, he is their recruit. Ohio State's recruiting class that one season was not called the John Groce Five. It was the Thad Five. Getting down to technicalities on who actually discovered the talent doesn't matter. What matters is every player knew coming in the head coach was going to be Tim O'Shea, so it's his recruiting class.

Also, if I remember correctly, Tommy went through various struggles to get playing time with the following coach after O'Shea as well. It wasn't until Coleman, Kinney and others were completely out of the picture that he received consistent minutes.

So once again, my entire point is O'Shea was a win against Florida away from being discussed to take the job at many high major schools. Him and Groce certainly do things a different way, but in the end O'Shea was stronger at home, O'Shea had more marquee OOC wins and Groce had better tournament results.
