Author Message Chicken George General User Member Since: 1/2/2005 Post Count: 765 Status: Offline     Moving Forward...    Posted: 12/15/2012 11:52:37 PM  1.  I'm Ivo'ed out.  Appreciate the loyality of JC in keeping him in the starting lineup and playing significant minutes based on his past  and also appreciate the 11 rebounds today--but I move him in a rotation at the 3 spot.  I'm done with him for the time being starting at the 4.  I rotate Smith, Keely, Hall (who doesn't like it inside either, but what the heck) and Green at 4 & 5.  Ivo's coming of the bench.   Enough begging and encouraging, it's consequence time.  And really, 60 seconds left in the game and an Ivo 17 footer?  Gawd no! 2.  It's time to press and if you're going to play 11 guys and you're a finesse team--utllize the resources and pick up the tempo of such games.  Give 'em different looks, zone press full court, change it up.  Not so much to stop them for scoring as they only had 50 points, but to change the pace of the game and create some opportunities. 3.  It's time to run some offensive sets that doesn't include 4 guys standing in a corner.  Dump it into Reggie seemed to work today, but otherwise I didn't see a whole lot of guys getting good looks.  I didn't see plays or designs geared towards getting guys the ball in positions to maximize their strengths.  For instance, I saw Ivo spending a significant amount of time standing at the 3 point line on the right baseline for entire series, time & time again.  Is he in the wrong place, or do we really want him doing some inside work, but the play has him standing 20 feet from the hoop the entire time?  Furthermore, Nick struggles to create his own shots and with nothing flowing to get him the ball in positions he can score, the guy gets 3 shots the entire game.  DJ & Walt impromptu the entire game. 4.  You are who you are, but great leaders also are able to adapt to those they are leading.  The stone face, arms-crossed coaching demeanor can be tweaked a bit, can't it.  A few fist pumps?  A sprinkle of emotion?  Kudos to JC for what appears to have been a seemless transition and I understand he really does challenge the guys at practice--but on gameday I kind of get the impression he's given these guys a 1 year free pass to kind of run things themselves.  It's almost like a, "you guys did more last year alone than I've ever done, so who am I to mess with you all." 5.  And if JC doesn't have any raw-raw in his blood, it's time for Walt & DJ to do some.  Saw it in Memphis and I saw it today--very little fight in these dogs.  Kind of expected the seniors to take this team on it's shoulders, but I don't see that kind of energy radiating from these guys.  Almost makes me wonder if the transition has really been that seemless? Finally, this team reminds me of me playing BrickBusters on my Blackberry years ago.  Something like 16 levels and not until Level 12 does it get fun.  Once you've been to levels 12, 13, 14, 15 & 16, it's hard to get excited to start another game and work your way through levels 1-11 again.  This team got to experience the bright lights, the big stage and the media.  Now it's back playing Winthrop in front of 4,000 people and a high school band, all the while they turn on ESPN and see the Muchigan team they beat on ESPN playing at the Barklay Center, and they want to be back there.  Not sure why the bright lights of Memphis didn't cause them to flip the switch, but they look like a team that wants to get to Level 16 and is sleepwalking through what should've been a Level 1 type game. This seems to me to be a good analogy.  I've had these same feelings but didn't quite know how to express those feelings in words.  This team lacks focus and intensity.  I'm hoping today was the wake up call they needed.  I almost think JC wants them to learn early in the season what poor execution and a poor attitude will get you.  It's better to have this type of play early in the season rather than later in the season.  Let's remember that JC has all kinds of MAC coaching records.  When it comes to real crunch time I think we'll be in good shape on the coaching end. EVER.  He's gone, what 16-17 consecutive games without drawing a foul to get to the line?  I don't know exactly why that is, but I rarely have seen Ivo getting down low with the mindset of drawing contact in the post.  He's a good enough free throw shooter that he could easily average 3-4 pts a game just at the foul line.  I'm in agreement with George - I'd take him from the starting lineup until he starts showing he wants to play big in a game.  He could be a difference maker for OUr team, but continues to play like he wants to be a tall 2-guard.
