According to multiple sources, ESPN will discontinue the event after this year.  I know some feel the bracketbuster series hurt mid-majors by killing off at-large chances.  I liked the series as it brought in quality opponents we probably wouldn't see otherwise

Do we still get/make return games for the next 2 years?  I hope so, because we could have a pretty big name coming in for a return game in 2 years..

I've seen crazier things happen.

Count me as a big fan of the Bracketbusters.  Maybe we can get a MAC vs CAA or Horizon to replace it.  But instead of playing it early in the year set it up mid-February and have the actual opponents with some flexibility to get the best matchups.

The idea was great.  The execution was poor.  If the goal was to really give mid-majors a chance at a quality win, then the quality mid-majors should be getting shots at the Northwesterns and Virginia Techs of the world, not each other.

I disagree. It was a weekend to showcase the midmajors. I think the problem was that while you had 8 good matchups you ended up with dozens of others that were bad and required travel that didn't make sense. Plus, you had some of the better "midmajor" leagues drop out so the quality of the pool of teams dipped.

I despised the bracketbuster thing.  But honestly, if they named it something else I might not have been so militantly against it as Ted is right that it did showcase midmajors.

I liked it at first, but in its present form, it offers little benefit to participating schools. Its season had passed.

Ted, your point is valid and I agree.  However, I feel like the unintended consequence was that one of the two schools that was being showcased just busted the others bracket.

I'd rather see the mids on the bubble busting the 8th Big East or 7th ACC teams bubble.

The problem is that the bubble Big 6 schools want no part of mids on an even keel.  They can have a mediocre record in conference, play their entire OOC at home or at the very worst on neutral courts, beat a couple of good schools at home and claim that they have better marquee wins.  Nevermind that those same marqee names absolutely destroyed them on the road.

I was tepid at best to the idea.  I'd rather see ESPN showcasing non-ego conferences more during the course of the season instead of one weekend in February.  They air a few non-ego games before Jan 1 and one or two on weekends, mostly after 10 pm.  But weekday games are always the "bigs."  I like the fact that NBC and CBS are focusing on non-egos with their cable services, but may be doing so only until they get a foothold in the market.  Ohio was able to use the Buster games as a springboard on championship runs.  But a lot of times we weren't marqueed, so it didn't seem to be worth it.

Anybody have a list of BB schools we played during this run of games?  I may be wrong, but I don't remember getting games that were all that much different than the types of teams/games we are already able to schedule exclusively in the Convo without ESPN's help.  Personaly, I won't miss the opportunity to play another team that's very similar to who we already play in our early season OOC schedule.

Off the top of my head, I remember home-and-homes with Butler (pre-Final 4) and George Mason (post-Final 4). Those were pretty solid. The New Mexico State games were good as well.

Looking back at the media guide, here's who we've played:

- @Butler (L) - won return game
- @Detroit (W) - won return game
- Samford (W) - lost return game
- @ New Mexico State (L) - won return game
- George Mason (W) - lost return game
- @ Eastern Kentucky (L) - won return game
- Wright State (W) - won return game
- @ Winthrop (W) - return game Saturday
- UNC-Ashville (W) - return game 2013

Total record in event: 6-3
Overall record vs. BracketBuster teams: 11-5

Chicken George- I agree with your overall sentiment. None of these teams were overly exciting to me. The same sort of teams we play in November and December.

Butler was completely off the map when we played them in 2004...it would be the equivalent of playing a Cleveland State or Detroit today. A solid "program" with some history, but Butler was mediocre at the time. George Mason was the best game of the bunch. Certainly not "final four" good, but a quality mid-major opponent.

Good riddance.  Maybe this crazy idea of a clandestine selection process slotting teams into made for TV games should be replaced with a real, honest to god playoff system.

Wait, why does that sound so familiar?

Come on, Ozcat, that makes no sense whatsoever.  Bracketbuster participants are known before the season starts.  When are you going to tell the 7th or 8th place acc team that they can participate?  Should they leave the date open just in case they're having a shi++y season?

In my perfect little sports utopia, yes.

Every team in NCAA leaves open a Saturday in mid to late February.  You then have a true bracket buster.

I get that it'll never happen.  It makes far too much sense for it to.

Then, of course, there's the issue of home games.  The "Big 6" schools will NEVER play a road game against a non-B6 team in February.  At least with the current system we were getting a home Buster game about every other year.
