Basketball BE Members Talk Split    Posted: 12/11/2012 9:29:42 AM  I posted this on the football message board awhile back but I heard back in late-August/early-September from someone close to the UD AD that the 7 BE schools were breaking off and joining UD, Xavier and Butler in a new 10-team league (SLU would move to MVC). He said it would be announced within 90 days. But then the BE announced a new TV deal and I thought it was dead. With the BE TV deal back up in the air, maybe it's back on? Butler is not one of them by the way. A combination of the two, and an invitation to Notre Dame with geographic divisions, would be an absolute force. It could probably support a BTN type of network with requisite religious programming. And Notre Dame would be relieved of it's promise to play ACC football games. It makes far too much sense to ever happen. First, do the 7 members have the legal right to dissolve the league name and keep the brand name and assets? If not, the new conference wouldn't collect NCAA Tourney money until it was eligible for an automatic bid again. Second, is the issue of money. The new BE deal would give the basketball schools $1M to $1.4M. That's less than the $1.5M they are making now but more than the $350K the A-10 schools get annually. So the question is how close could a basketball-only conference some to the money they are walking away from. I think it would be close enough that they walk. Why wouldn't the 7 of them just cherry-pick the best schools out of the A-10? Heck, there are some schools in the A-10 that the upper tier teams would rather not have (Fordham, Duquesne, St. Bonaventure). I don't think Villanova would join a league with St. Joe's/LaSalle or that St. John's would join a league with Fordham or Georgetwon with GW or Providence with URI. Although I have seen stories postulate that SLU and Richmond would join to make it a 12-team league. I think a 12-team league was more predicated by football (so you can have a championship game). SLU would make sense but Rick Majerus was very public in saying they should leave the A-10 for the MVC. The thinking may be different with the opportunity to join with the BE schools. Too bad we won't ever see it because football makes the conference carousel turn...but I don't want to be bailing for the A-10. Basketball BE Members Talk Split    Posted: 12/11/2012 10:21:31 PM  First off, I don't think they would come calling.  They strictly want to high-profile b-ball, low profile football conference.  No FBS.  Even if they did come calling, we should turn them down.  The money we'd get from b-ball only wouldn't match what we can get from MAC participation in the new football world in two years.  Plus, we'd likely wind up in a less stable football conference. I doubt they'll be able to keep the Big Least brand, but I'm not sure they'd want it.  It has become so watered down with the football grab that they may want to distance themselves from it. Basketball BE Members Talk Split    Posted: 12/13/2012 10:17:17 AM  I posted these thoughts over on the football board, but I think they are pertinent for basketball as well. With the new coming today that the Big East looks headed to the dustbin of conferences, and barring a last minute invite from the ACC what is Cincinnati going to do? I think if the Big East is dissolved the MAC should immediately make overtures to Cincinnati, Memphis and Marshall. Cincy and Memphis are basketball powers and they certainly have upgraded their football programs while Marshall has probably been longing to get back into the MAC for a while. I imagine UConn will be invited to the ACC, but if they are not, why not throw a lifeline to them. The MAC should be proactive, it may be out best chance to upgrade and our stability should be a draw. Our football has been on the upswing for years and these schools realize that is where the money is at this point in college athletics. Who knows, when the dust is settled it may look like the best option for all of these schools. What other options do they have at this point? It may sound crazy but crazier things have happened. No downside.  Just don't expect a whole lot.  I think the breakup of the Big Least is/was inevitable.  Too many one-sport schools.  Too many splits to the pie.  The WAC found that a 16-team league was too unwieldy with scheduling and the loss of old rivalries, and the old WAC schools formed the MWC.  Imagine having 16 teams for basketball and 15 teams for football conference with half of them different from basketball.  Total lack of identity.
