I only played basketball through high school, so maybe I just don't "get it". But, it's extremely baffling to me how we can look so dominant at home and then barely scrape by the same team on the road. If we played WMU in the Convo yesterday, it'd bet the house we win by 15+.

So, why is it that we struggle so mightily on the road? You can't tell me it's the intimidating road crowds...the average MAC crowd is like 2,000 people and 100 students.

Is it more of a mental thing? Or is there something else I'm missing here? Anyone know how our road winning % compares to the rest of college basketball?

It's a number of factors.  Haven't you ever felt fatigued from traveling?  Much of it's related to routines.  When you're at home, you get to sleep in your own bed, eat your favorite pre-game meal, have normal practice times, not worry about making up tests, papers, etc.  Athletes are creatures of habit and playing on the road throws them out of their typical habits.  There's definitely a mental aspect to it as well, but there are a lot of physical aspects at play.

Nice Article

Home court winning percentages drive home the fact that the home court advantage in Division I college basketball is not a myth. The midpoint of the current 344 home court winning percentages is 68.2%, with half of those teams' winning percentages above it and half below it. A total of 35 schools have winning percentages of 80% or above, 143 schools have winning percentages of 70% or above, 273 have winning percentages of 60% or better, and 326 schools have winning percentages of 50% or better. A total of 197 schools have winning percentages above or equal to 66.67%, which is the historical home court winning percentage average when Division I teams play only Division I teams. Just 18 schools have losing home court records of below 50%, and CBN believes the number may be less than 18 if all data for some of these institutions were available. This list includes schools that are reclassifying to Division I and count in the RPI but are not yet officially Division I members.

Another pretty good article

Lots of numbers, charts and introspective thoughts. I can't get my arms around how big the project this guy did looking at several time periods and a RPI  top/bottom analysis of the teams

I'm  very surprised to read of the lack of uniformity of the ball.  Not even within the conference?!  That could explain  some of the away woes.

But technique/teaching and resolve should help overcome da ball.  Maybe my expectation are too high but I just can't believe we weren't up 8-10 in the last minute.  If we are at the top of the MAC...

I have the benefit of 10 years of databases to see what home field advantage does in the MAC.  Here are the (unofficial because I could've screwed something up) home records of conference games:

2012: 65-31 (.677)
2011: 62-34 (.646)
2010: 62-34 (.646)
2009: 65-31 (.677)
2008: 68-28 (.708)
2007: 62-34 (.646)
2006: 63-45 (.583)
2005: 83-34 (.709)
2004: 74-43 (.632)
2003: 74-44 (.627)

Total: 678-358 (.654)

As a conference, we are pretty much in-line with the national numbers.  I thought I remember seeing stats suggesting the smaller conferences (and therefore weaker atmospheres) are just as much if not more of a home court advantage.  This is why I think it really is just the comforts of home that OUDK touched on.

Ding Ding Ding!  We have a winner.

And I think we ARE at the top of the MAC.  The disparity is just nowhere as close to as wide as you think it is.  IF we win the MAC, I can promise you that we'll EARN every bit of it and it won't just fall into our lap because we're superiorly talented (because we're not).

Well look at Ohio State. They got blown out at Illinois and barley beat a Purdue team that lost to Eastern Michigan, but can beat Michigan at home. Are our expectations high from last season? Yes. Will we make it to the tourny again? I'd say about 60%. Depends if they can beat Akron at Akron. Or the chance of getting upset in early rounds of the tournament.

I would say the gap between 75-200 is pretty small.

Then how come none of you pundits posted beforehand in warning that this was not a game which we should win rather readily...given the posts beforehand which very much had this as a solid win for us?

Is home court such a big factor that we'll win easily at home against all MAC foes save for 'kron (hopefully win, of course but will be a tussle)--and then struggle in all MAC roadies?.....If the latter is true, our chances of making the NCAA's would seem to be quite remote.

Last year's team was 3-5 on the road in MAC play. Their biggest win was by 11 points. So I'm not sure why you would expect this year to be any different. If this year's team fares better, they could earn one of the top two seeds and get a bye into the MAC semifinals (3-seed last year).

Look at that loss at EMU.... The same damn team that upset Michigan, beat USF, and took A UNC team with a few first round picks in the NBA Draft to overtime. Anything can happen.

Every year anew, we collectively forget how difficult it is to win on the road in the MAC.

That Toledo loss still sticks in my craw. Ohio scored the first 15 points of the game.

If the home team gets to pick the ball used, who gets to pick the ball for the MAC tourney?   Dumb question, just wondering if it makes such a big deal, which I'm sure it does.

Conference supplies the balls for the tournament.

Western Michigan is probably the third-toughest road game Ohio will play in the MAC, so just to be able to win by any margin and in any fashion is a huge step. Going to Akron and Kent State will be tougher, but hopefully Ohio can respond.

Groce, who"s Illinois team has lost 4 out of the last 6, seemed to be able to peak his team"s performance at tournament time. I hope that JC can do the same thing.  If he does he will be a hero.
