Someone pointed out to to me that there is an $18.7 million budget item identified as "Convocation Center Repairs/Enhancement" in the capital improvements plan.  Anyone have any information on what they will be repairing/enhancing? That dollar figure is about one-third of the present construction value of the building.

...is much needed!

I don't know if there is any truth to this, but if so - I'm happy. The building is really starting to show it's age recently. Still one of the best in the MAC, but not nearly the asset it once was. Needs some serious TLC, and I hope it gets it soon!

That could go to repairing all the chairs, new paint, new entrance?, new concessions, new bathrooms, and a new roof?

According to the rough budget estimates I've seen so far on this, the line item breakdown includes:

$3.1M - Retractable roof with view of Bong Hill
$2.4M - Daktronics shot clock that actually works
$2.2M - Richard Vedder athletic spend digital clock
$1.7M - New strength and conditioning room complete with team assortment of "Shake Weights"
$1.2M - HDTVs in visiting lockerrooms that only show reruns of MacGuyver
$1.0 M - Pretzel vending upgrades
$478K - Additional security to ticket team buses, player and coach vehicles in Convo lot
$423K - Rohr Room motion detector to set off actual Bobcat roar (with Beats Audio)
$397K - Locker room showerheads replaced with Amazon rain forest soaking shower heads
$63.75 - New urinal cakes (featuring the Redhawks logo)
$1.3M - Conversion of outdoor upper level into beer garden
$7,500 - O-Zone t-shirts upgraded to 100% Egyptian cotton
$1.1M - Heated leather seats for Bobcat Club members (with cup holders)
$212K - Bench towels replaced with Sham-WOWs
$1.0M - Those cheap little white plastic Larry Conrath Realty basketballs the cheerleaders throw to fans during three-pointers? -- now it's iPad minis
$945K - Bobcat Fan Zone with Patrick Flomo Block Party area and Geno Ford growth posters
$745K - Starting line-up announcer: Michael  Buffer
$342K - BobcatAttack.com members-only lounge with ICEE machines and green "members only" jackets

Keep in mind, this is very preliminary information.

My urinal cake making factory in China is ready to start making the Redchicken cakes. Just waiting for an okay from Miami University Marketing Department so as to make sure all legal i s are dotted and t s are crossed. I would guess I should get an answer really soon.

I'm not an IP lawyer, but I'm guessing that they haven't trademarked/patented the terms Fiami, Muck Fiami, or RedHens.

probably renovating the dorm rooms

Old girl needs some TLC.

Scoreboard, Chairs, Vinyl wraps. weight room, Paint, Plaques to replace the HOF pics. DYSON blades or at least hand dryers from this century. ....don't think we are gonna get an extra practice gym for that kind of money.

Interesting...a quick Google search uncovers this document...OU's 20 year capital improvement plan:

http://www.ohio.edu/facultysenate/upload/capital_plan_booklet-11-03.pdf

For 2017-2018, it has "Convocation Center Structural and Envelope Repair" for $18.7 million. This sounds to me like more structural, HVAC and behind-the-scenes stuff...not renovations (restrooms, concessions, lobby, etc) seen by the average fan.

Anyone with more construction knowledge care to weigh in?

*Also of note, this plan has no mention of any renovations, expansion or otherwise changes to Peden Stadium...FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS!!! Guess we can put all of that expansion talk to rest, huh?

In this environment I don't think that the Capital (Capitol? I always get them mixed up) improvement plan is going to include athletic improvements/renovations. I'm guessing that that will come out of athletic department or booster money, not from money intended to be spent on dorm/academic buildings.

EDIT: Which, as we all know, also have a huge backlog in terms of repairs and maintenance.

Actually borna they renovated the dorm rooms in the mid-2000s while I was in school.  Basically gutted them so that each room now has an open floor plan and movable furniture compared to the built-in beds, desks and closets they used to have for those 4-person rooms.

Missing from this list is the $1 million to sweep and swab the lower front entrance ramps. I think they were last swept prior to the Neil Young concert in February 1983.  I know because I was there camping out for tickets when the janitor swept them...at 6 a.m.

Good to get that out there. That makes me happy as the things I listed are high on *MY* priority list from and recruiting and game day experience.

When they redid the Dorms did they bring the wiring up to handle the modern student. I have been impressed withthe extensive renovations to existing structures and building of new dorms at BSU. They took one high rise down to the skeleteon where you could see right through it and the only thing left was the elevator shafts and cement uprights, i have often thought the modern college student has so many more needs than we did electrically and infrastructure wise ....not counting the creature comforts like fireplaces in the common areas.

Often said if I were a student, living in the Roundhouse would be a priority for me.

Do you have any idea how much amperage my hot pot and air popper drew?  It was outrageous.  Not to mention my first generation blow drier.  My neighbor at Read Hall had six plugs leading into his stereo system, including special power for his speakers.

Very glad I didn't live there when I was on campus. A young lady was shot to death in her Convo room by her jealous boyfriend in the early '80s.

I lived in Convo, and it was a huge factor in shaping the next 22 years of my life.

However, it's comparatively remote and its size (relatively few residents spread through such a long hallway) does not lead to the same ability to congregate as most dorms.

That would have been a good thing for me....our suite always seemed to be the one everyone flocked to....often had 8 or 10 guys in there eating popcorn and watching M*A*S*H reruns at 3 in the afternoon. Hard to get things done.

Ah, the infamous Trans tour.  Good show but that was some weird stuff for Neil.  Hard to believe that was 30 years ago.

I know I've probably said this 10 times on this board, but I don't see how we can't at least afford to make the restrooms Green & White instead of blue & white.  I also think having the radio broadcast wired into the restrooms and concession areas would be a great touch that I wouldn't think should cost too much.  Maybe it could even be a student project?

This is what's always missing from anybody's 20 year capital improvement plan - things that make sense and are relatively easy to do.

When you tell people that they have to "take a long view", they go all pie in the sky in hopes of getting that retractable roof they always wanted and forget the other stuff.  Anyway, since the plan gets redone every couple of years after they blow off the "priorities" for the "have to's", it's probably OK.

$1-$2 million could go a long way in helping out the Convo. New paint, some graphics on the walls, refreshed restrooms/concessions and I'd be happy. The entrance/lobby could use some serious work too. The Hall of Fame is starting to REALLY show it's age. Half of the pictures have been faded into obscurity by the sun.

The dorm rooms themselves were done in the summer of 2005, as well as lounge furniture... I was an RA the next 2 years there so it was a big deal in 2005-06.  There may still be some work need to be done in the hallways, as when I left the Convo in 2007 they had done nothing to the outdated bathrooms or the mods themselves, the lounges need carpet,  and when I graduated/left res life in 2008 they had begun to change the lighting in 1/4 of the building in the halls and mods, sot sire if they did the other 3/4 yet.  If any of this work got put to the backburner, it will probably be done with this.  The dorm part will also probably be switched over to ID swipe entry eventually.

But, any finishing dorm renovations should be a pretty minor chunk of change, the hard/expensive parts are done, by and large.
