This Kent State team is something the school hasn't seen in 15 years: Desperate. Already 2-3 with a bad loss to a bad Bowling Green team, the Golden Flashes are in real danger of finishing below .500 in conference play having already dropped two home games. They need a win to save their season and stay in the hunt for a bye to the quarterfinals.

As demonstrated last night, KSU has some problems scoring the ball, especially when they can't get it to Chris Evans. Randall Holt is a chucker to an embarrassing degree, which is problematic because he's their point guard. Because of this, they don't get a whole lot of assists. The defensive plan should be simple: Deny Evans the ball and induce as many shots from Holt (a poor shooter) as you can.

What's sad about your analysis JSF, is that Kent is legitimately the 3rd to 5th best team in the MAC.

When he's completely driven Kent State into mediocrity in two years, I can't wait for that 'Senderoff with his head' thread on here.

I still can't believe they hired him.

I am totally behind you with this one Brian. I do not wich many folks ill will but he is one of them. For many reasons....beside just being a little freeking weasel

This should be a great game. JC's return to the MACC. Potential for us to get to 6-0.

Akron already grabbed their W in this venue. We need ours to keep up with them.

My favorite part of this team is that I have no idea who is gonna step up each game. Keely has 24, then 5. Ric has 13 against Toledo out of nowhere. Nick from 2 to 15. Offut 14, then 6.

This squad has to be an absolute pain in the ass to prep for. You can only contain so many guys without the others burning you.

Anyone know if the Buffalo area gets STO? I'll be taking a break from the slopes around 5:45 to hopefully catch this game in the lodge. Go Cats!

Someone pointed out to me the Ohio athletics website seems to incorrectly list the game time as 7 p.m. on multiple references
but the game time really its 6.

6:00. I think the official Ohio site has it at 7 because that was the time before the game was picked up by STO.

I agree that Kent will be desperate. A fourth conference loss, including a third at home, before the end of January and their chance for even a respectable season will be gone. They're going to be ready to play. Throw in us being undefeated and Christian coming back and it will be an interesting evening.

what's wrong with scoring the ball? isn't scoring the ball half the battle in a basketball game. with the other half trying to stop the other team from scoring the ball?

Let's not forget that with season ending tournaments that carry an automatic bid, there is no such thing anymore as early season desperation unless you worry about polls. Even at that, for the MAC it's the difference between being a 13 or a 15 seed if you ever get that far. Not much to choose. All Kent has to do is hang around and get a trip to Cleveland. At that point, their season can end as well as any other.

Who wants to sign my petition to require the MAC give its automatic berth to the in-season champion?

Will be interesting to see how the psychology of this game pans out. So many factors, so many variables, so many cross currents.

Sometimes a feeling of desperation doesn't generate great performances. But we shall see tomorrow evening. Kent does have talent and when they come together they play well. We just have to find ways to disrupt them and bring a great defensive effort.

Agree 100%. This is a stupid expression. You do not score the ball. You score points. You shoot the ball. You dribble the ball, or handle the ball. You pass the ball. Sometimes you lose the ball.

You score points.

Or...

You score (shallow, cross-section cut) a delicious flank steak before marinating it for the grill.

If the place your at has Directv, yes, they'll have STO most likely.

But if they have Fios or Time Warner, they won't have the game.

I wrote that at 8:20 in the morning. Cut me a little slack.

And there is absolutely early-season desperation. Seeding for the conference tournament matters. In a knockout scenario, the more games you play, the more chances you have to lose. Ask EMU. And it's a lot easier to approach a tournament when you've won 20 games as opposed to lost 20.

Not meaning to call you out JSF... I've heard the expression a lot over the last few years, and it's one of those things that just spreads in certain circles, even though it makes no sense, and everyone just accepts it as normal.

Something good did come out of it. I think I'm buying a flank steak to grill for next week's significant warmup.

It's in my DNA not to get up before noon. Having a job that starts at 7 is very difficult for me.
