...because I grew up a fan of the program, but only 898 people showed up at Millett Hall to watch them host UMass. I don't care if their students are still on break, it's a new low.

How about we become a Hockey/Football conference. Think about it. The most watched sports in our conference is football and Hockey. Basketball is 2nd tiered in schools like WMU, Miami, BGSU, and even Ohio has a strong following.

EDIT

Average Attendance for Miami, WMU, BGSU, UMASS (if they join us for Hockey for some reason) 3,786 with UMASS. Without - 2848. Miami is at 94% capacity, WMU is at 98% capacity, UMASS is at 78.9%, and BGSU is at 41%.

Average Attendance for MAC Basketball 2907. OU leads with 5,600. Miami averages 2,209 for basketball and 3,021 for hockey.

C'mon now. Our club hockey team does not come close to outdrawing basketball. Not to mention, it's not remotely on the same level as WMU, Miami, BG, etc. Lumping us in with those schools is laughable.

Every game that I went to was a sell out.

A sold out Bird Arena is still only about 35% of our average basketball attendance.

I don't even know if it's 35%....that arena is tiny. My perception in recent years is that the interest in our club team has declined. There's not nearly as much media coverage, and they don't advertise like they used to.

For me, it's always been a novelty...but I can't really get into it knowing that it's glorified intramurals.

I remember when Don Strock's VT team came to Ohio in the '70s.  We were down by 4 TDs or so in the 3rd Q and people started leaving.  A hockey player I knew stood up and yelled "You don't leave a hockey game!"  He had taken Bluto's advice.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

I don't think that's particularly true among the students. But perhaps it is outside of the university. The 110 has become more active at hockey games and even has one game a year when they attend as a band and play in the stands. A friend of mine from the j school did a lot to resurrect the online radio and social media presence the last two years. Based on my personal observations being a student, I'd say interest actually increased from the time I was a freshman until I graduated last year.

EDIT: Now, that's not to say it may have been even more popular before I got to Athens. I'm just saying I've noticed an increase in interest from where it was.

I couldn't find a seating capacity number on the OHIO website. Wikipedia says it seats 2,000, so that's what I went with. I actually never went there in my four years in Athens, so I have no idea if the 2,000 seat number is accurate.

Not to mention Miami, WMU, and BG are all in elite hockey conferences already.

Count me in the party that really doesn't mind kicking Miami while they are down....

I've seen crazier things happen.

If we were ever to turn hockey into a varsity sport, Bird Arena would need a serious renovation or we would need to build a new ice arena because no recruits would take us seriously compared to not only Miami's beauty, but even BG or Western Michigan's arenas.

We can dream, right?

I've often wondered why they didn't find a way to make that hockey arena in Oxford dual purpose?  It's a fantastic venue, and Millett is about as bad as it gets.

I don't know how well you would be able to renovate or expand Bird Arena, but where else would you put an arena? Bicentennial Park? Look at WMU stadium only 3,500 seats. If we decide why the hell not and decided to fund raise a campaign to get money for a new Hockey arena, we could take down the Aquatic Center and build a facility their with a new pool, 4,000-5,000 seat Ice Hockey Arena and yeah...

They didn't want to do that.

Since I know nothing about hockey, would a rink fit on the floor of the Convo?

I thought I heard somewhere that an ice rink was supposed to be included in the Convo but got removed from the plan due to funding falling through.

Having an arena that supports basketball and hockey only works if you have other places to practice for those sports.  Hence why it is only done in the pros and at big schools like tOSU which have practice facilities.

Hockey could obviously practice in Bird, and basketball could practice in....Grover?

I don't know if on-campus interest for all of the hockey games has increased or not, but I do know that for the last 3 years, Byrd Arena has been PACKED to the rafters for the Parents/Dad Weekends.  Going to a hockey game is still a good time!

And oh yeah, in a nod to the thread, Miami still sucks!
