I'm a worst case scenario kind of guy, so I'm just wondering, if we don't win the MAC tourney or the regular season championship, what do we have to do to get at least an at large NIT bid. I think our recent NCCA success, current record and the fact we are no less than the #2 team in the league helps. Do we have to avoid losses against everybody but Akron and get to the championship game.  What final record do we need to make the cut?  Just curious what the experts think?

MAC Championship or bust.

I'll tell ya where we'll go. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talkin' bout a little place called... ATHENS.

Aren't all NIT bids at-large bids?

No. If you're the regular season conference champs but don't win your conference tourney, you get an automatic bid. Akron was assured of an NIT bid regardless of what happened in the MAC Tourney.

Now that the NCAA owns the NIT the bids are a lot more merit-based then prior. But that doesn't mean it's fair. Here were the RPIs for the at-large teams last year:

Marshall - 44
UCF - 54
Miami (FL) - 60
Ole Miss - 61
Oregon - 63
Northwestern - 65
Seton Hall - 68
St. Joe's - 69
N Iowa - 72
Miss. St. - 75
Arizona - 76
UMass - 77
Dayton - 81
LSU - 84
Cleveland St. 85
Tennessee - 86
LaSalle - 87
Minnesota - 90
Stanford - 98
Illinois St. - 99
Iowa - 131

Biggest snub: Weber St. at 71

i hate when we start talking NIT bids.  Kind of embarassing and rarely is based on merit.

Why is talking about the NIT embarrassing?  It's not like we are in one of the money conferences. If we don't win the MAC tournament I hope we get an NIT bid and I sure as hell won't be embarrassed by it.

There really isn't any way for a team (MAC or otherwise) to lock up an at-large NIT bid.  Beyond the auto bids Ted mentioned, the selection committee goes by a set of "principles" for naming and seeding the field.  I think there are three that are probably overarching:

"The committee shall select the best available teams to fill the NIT field."

"There is no limit on the number of teams the committee may select from one conference."

"On the ballot, each committee member shall identify not more than 32 teams that should be invited to the tournament based upon their successful play to date."

In other words, the committee members select the teams that they think should be in the tournament, no matter what their record, no matter what their RPI, no matter their strength of schedule.  It's the "best" teams available, however they define "best."  They can rely on whatever biases they may have and may be influenced by whatever factors (including TV ratings and potential attendance) they choose.  So, the best thing is to forget about the NIT and concentrate on winning the MAC Championship.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.
