EMU is annoying. They're not good enough to be a contender, but they're good enough to win a game or two against contenders. Just ask last year's Ohio Bobcats. They play at a glacial pace (less than 60 possessions per 40 minutes) and sit in a very effective 2-3 zone the whole game. The Eagles are long and anchored by some big bodies in the middle. They have the length to disrupt passes, prevent drives and extend the zone out pretty far. The Bobcats must be patient and unselfish. If DJ approaches this the right way, he can carve up that zone. If EMU makes DJ think he has to do this all himself, it's going to be a long night.

On the plus side, they have no real offense.

We're gonna likely need a decent turn over margin in OUr favor, and not let them kill us with offensive rebounds, to influence the pace to OUr benefit. Will definitely need to hit better than 33% from 3, and not get beat by a wide margin at the FT line like this last game.

If DJ can penetrate and dish, or get to the FT line effectively - we could break that zone down. You don't break down a zone by launching 40 footers.

Gotta say; I like EMU's style of play.  They do the best they can with what they have and make teams pay for mistakes (Purdue, us last year.)  I hate that it's a style used against us though.  We're either going to be cold or we're going to carve them up; I doubt it'll be an in between.

So, we know what we have to do.

And, yeah, it's about playing to a high percentage of ability.  May we bring the superior effort!

Agreed. DJ needs to carve them up and I feel like our quicker players need to slash to the basket early and try to draw fouls on their inside players to make some space in the lanes.

It's usually the other four players on the court for us that make DJ think he has to do it all by himself.  If all five players stay engaged and actually move themselves and the ball quickly then we will break down the zone.  If we have a bunch of guys standing around then DJ will start launching ridiculous shots.

I think Ivo will be critical in our offensive sets. Whenever I watch 2-3 zones, they often crumble if the offense is able get the ball to a high post player around the free throw line. That's when you have options - one dribble to the hoop, pass outside as the defense collapses, or rise for a jumper. I think Ivo's game can fit all of those roles well.

Really good observations about the EMU game.

Shabamon:  I think you can add Reggie Keely to Ivo for being able to receive passes in the paint in the middle of the 2-3 zone.  I think either Reg or Ivo can hit that 13-15 foot shot.

The easiest way to beat a team like EMU:  press the heck out of them.

Sure. I just didn't want to frame it that way.

I think we got this game plan broke down pretty solid. All the further posts after my first good additions. Maybe we all just give JC a break and take turns on the bench Wednesday night!  (Oh wait, that's what we do in the chat room, or say leaning over to each other at the game). I really like the press thought - just don't get burned deep. Me thinks he has it covered though..........and I gotta think the guys are gonna be ready for this one after that embarrassment up there last year.........

Funny thing is...even though Eastern likes to keep the pace slow, they are capable of getting out in transition when they want to.

Be "In The Game" - "Mentally" - for every second of 40 minutes - after baskets, on in bound plays, No Lackadaisical Passes, anticipate/move to the ball, and,................HUSTLE (Reggie has been Great at this down the floor in transition lately).

Which is almost never. Hope we induce this out of them. Rather have that than them sitting in the zone.

I saw their game vs. Central on STO and they got up and down the floor several times.  They have guys athletic enough to run the court.

I get nervous anytime I see a zone came at this team.  In my humble opinion they don't seem to handle it that well, like when Kent threw the 2-3 at them late in the game on Saturday.  I'd love to see a confident Nick Kellogg make them pay with some deep bombs, but if he misses a couple early he may get scared like he did late against Kent and not pull the trigger.  That's one guy I wish would never stop shooting when he's got good looks.  I agree that Ivo flashing to the foul line would be a great way to combat the zone, but I'm not sure if Big Reg has the hands to be the one handling the ball that much away from the block.

Eastern can't score, from what I can see in their results from this season.  It looks like they have topped 70 points just one time.  My biggest concern about this game is don't get caught looking ahead to Akron.  After the Winthrop debacle, we can't take anyone lightly.  My gut tells me it's an easy double digit win.  I'd like to see a solid game from Nick and I think either TJ or Ricardo could have a good game off the bench.  Bottom line, enjoy the game in the Convo because we don't get many here this month!

This^

Reggie's comments in today's Mess gives me some confidence OUr team is not looking beyond EMU.  What I would really like to see is the pedal-to-the-metal for 40 minutes, no late game leads dissipating or disappearing.  If we can develop a killer attitude, stomp-on-the-throat mentality I think it will be big going forward, especially in Cleveland.

Yes.  In the meantime, it's great that we've been finding ways to win these MAC games both at home and on the road UNTIL that big roll starts.

Don't know if the team is more focused on Wednesdays or just playing lesser opposition, but the average margin of victory so far is 16 on Wednesdays (Buff 18, NIU 18, @Fiami 12) but only 4 on Saturdays (@WMU 2, Toledo 9, @Kent 1).

Except for the NIU game, EMU's MAC games have been close -- 7 pts was the biggest margin, a home loss to Fiami.  I expect them to play a lot of zone, since that gives us fits.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.
