It was the end of the U broadcast though.  Will be interesting if any of the game plays make the Top 10 - Coop to end the half, Taylor to win, Coop's no look pass.

It was a good showing for the MAC

Great shot by Stevie, but am I the only person who thought Nick was dumb for taking the final layup. He gave Kent a chance to tie the game with a three when he could have just dribbled out the clock.

I was THINKING THE SAME THING. I think he was so emotional and thought the clock would run out. could have been very costly.

He did hustle back on D - which was needed.  So his head was in the game.

Yeah, don't know how I missed it in live action, but on the replay you can see that kents got off a not-horrible 3ball attempt to tie it.

Always put points on the board.  If they had fouled him as he tried to dribble out the clock and he only made one of the two free throws, a three by them wins the game.  The best they could do was tie it after he made the layup.

Go back and look at the final seconds. The defender trailing Nick was slowing down and really giving up. I still say that he could have dribbled to either corner and burned the clock. Again, a great teaching moment when breaking this film down. Would love to know Born's take on this sequence.

Only a Sith deals in absolutes. Usually I would take the points, and maybe Nick didn't realize this, but there wasn't anyone near him. He easily could have run out the clock.

But did Nick know he didn't have any pursuers at that point? Are we sure he wasn't doing exactly as coached?

Will never know unless somebody asked Christian and Kellogg about this in post-game. Hopefully, one of the media guys asked.

Kent could have fouled off the ball as well.  Do you want the two points or Ivo at the line?

happens all the time...even in the pros.  seen it time and time again in football when, instead of scoring, a guy should just go down short of the goal line and run the clock out.   turned out fine for us.

There was still too much time left to know you can dribble out the clock successfully without being fouled.  If you're not sure about the clock situation then take the points to make it 3 point lead.  And Kellogg did hustle back on defense while many other guys were celebrating so that was a very heady move.  I am good with how Kellogg handled the final sequence.

I think Nick did the right thing. He took the easy points with only three seconds left and Kent had to go the length of the court and shoot a three with the whole building in pandemonium. I'd rather have that then risk Nick missing a free throw if Kent fouls him while he's dribbling out.

Thanks for posting the vid.

On the drive home from the Convo I had planned to discuss Nick's last bucket with my son as a teaching moment as I had also thought initially that maybe dribbling out the clock was the correct decision.  But as I waited thru Stevie's and coach's interviews with Russ before bringing up the topic I had more time to think about it and I have to say Alan is right -- gotta take the points there to go up three as worst they can do is tie.  Other points above in this regard are solid.  The comparison to football makes no sense with the need for the trailing team to get out of the end zone and get at least 60+ yards and then a long FG if there is time, or the full 99 yards for the TD to make a comeback.  Much easier to score in last seconds in hoops.

Not only did Nick get back on defense, looked to me he contested Evans' shot.

I agree. Plus with the speed of the play there is no way he was able to scan behind him to see where all the Kent guys were. If he peels off for all he knows he's peeling off into a steal.  Take the sure two to put you up three.

Take the guaranteed points.  I would much rather go to 2OT than lose because we were too conservative.  Yes, he may have been able to burn more clock, but you don't know how much time it would've burnt and you don't know if he makes 2 free throws or even one.

Agreed in cases like this you take the points when they are there.  There are a few cases where one should not take points but work the clock, but this wasn't one of them.  After Nick scored it would have taken a miracle three to tie and send it into a second OT.  I'll take those odds any day.  GO OHIO!

big tilly, if he passes on the layup and misses one or both of the free throws, they have a chance to tie or win with a two or three.  I'd take that layin there all night long.  Best they could get was a tie on a real lucky shot at the end.
