I know Nick is the consummate teammate and a tremendous guy but I have to say, after watching the game tonight, should Nick see the bench? I think Rico brings more than him right now. Rebounding, defense and toughness. He even hits some 3's on occasion (more than Nick seems to be giving us). If Ivo was benched for T.J., perhaps Nick needs it.

Billythecat,

In case you didn't read my post....I WOULD HAVE RICO (Ricardo) JOHNSON on the floor! I don't see you opposed to benching Ivo anywhere on the forum so why isn't benching Nick something that seems feasible? What has Nick done this year? Rico was one of the only guys I saw giving any ounce of total effort against Belmont. He has been tough all year and when it comes to Kron on Wednesday, I'd rather see Rico guarding Walsh than Nick.

We're doing exactly what fans all the around the country do--that's overreacting and wanting to bench everyone after every bad game.  At this juncture of the season, with this teams history, along with the fact that many are seniors--I think JC is going to ride the hand he's been given this year and that's probably the prudent thing to do.  Other than inserting TJ, JC has made very few tweaks this season. Honestly, I'm not sure how many options to change he really has other than playing two down low vs just Reggie/Jon and he seems unwilling to try going a little bigger against some of the more physcial teams.  He's going to live/die by the perimeter game and not try to strengthen what is clearly a weakness.  He's going to play towards what he believes our strength is and not attempt to morph ourselves into something else.

If:
DJ is DJ
Nick is Nick
Reggie is Reggie
Walt is Walt
Etc... then we'll be just fine.

Problem is, the stars have not aligned yet this season and we have not got everyone all rolling at the same time.  Nick is slumping, Travis hasn't been the shooter we thought he'd be (and I don't care what the numbers say), Ivo has never turned the corner and Walt shows glimpses of March 2012, but not consistently.  The bottom line is, if we're hitting our 3's we can be the team we were last year and when we're not hitting our 3's we look like we did tonight.  That's the hand we're playing and it appears it's going to be feast or famine.

Does seem as though we looked a little more like Belmont did tonight, personally last year with a few more back doors & open looks---we really don't get many open looks.  Otherwise I think JC has detemined he's riding this hand "as is."

I don't think we can afford to bench Nick, because him getting his range back is the key to us turning the corner and making a run.

Besides the fact that he has gotten ice cold from deep, I actually like what he has done with his game.  He has added the ability to drive and score...  If he can just start hitting fro.m deep again, wow.  Its frustrating because he literally felt automatic from deep for so long.  I know guys go through spells, but this is the ugliest spell I've seen from one of the best 3 point shooters I've ever seen.  When it gets this bad, his confidence probably takes a hit which makes it all the worst.

I am assuming he hasn't changed his mechanics, so what is the issue?

I've seen crazier things happen.

Since the Akron game, he's been shooting 16% from 3. It seemed bad but I didn't realize it was that bad. This is also the last time he made more than one 3 in a game. In that game he had 2. If he continues at this clip he's going to finish nearly 10 percentage points lower than last season.

No doubt Nick struggled and has struggled with the 3 ball the last few games. However, he had plenty of company at the guard position struggling last nite. We got taken apart by Belmont's guards. Here's a stat comparison of the groups:
Pts      Rebs        Assists           3's           Steals               TO's

Coop
Nick                                                              20         4                  6                  2/16           3                        10
Walt

Clark
Johnson                                                      51       17                 11               5/17            3                         8
Mann

Reggie                                                        22      13                    2                2/5             0                          0
TJ

Jenkins                                                       21       7                    1                 2/3             0                          3
Noack

Ohio Bench                                               20       9                     3                2/4              3                         4

Belmont Bench                                         9        10                   3                1/2              3                         1

Woah, that's alarmingly bad.

He hasn't been getting or taking as many catch and shoot 3s as he usually does. Even sometimes when he has a catch and shoot opportunity I notice that he shoots off the dribble. That might be a confidence thing.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

Nick is the type of player that, if he hits an early three, will not hesitate to load up again and again.  The problem is when he misses two or three, he gets super gun shy about letting it fly.  A guy like him that can get hot and throw up 9-12 points in a couple of minutes needs to play...but play confidently.  I would think taking him out of the starting lineup might ding his confidence level more than any other guy.
