Like many other BA readers and contributors I seem to spend a lot of time thinking about basketball in general and BOBCAT basketball in particular.  Last night's thoughts turned to the seemingly regular occurrence of an opposing player having a career game against the Bobcats.  That then led to my thinking about the shots that keep going in when that player is having his career game.

My mind's eye keeps seeing these players coming off a "hook screen" making a quick catch, square-up, quick release and BOOM.  I can't  help but think that in preparation for the Bobcats each team spends a lot of time working on this type of ball movement and offensive strategy.

This thought then led me to thinking about OUr offensive struggles that seem to occur in each game.  Here my mind's eye sees two different offenses.  The "good offense" is when OUr offensive sets are based on movement without the ball with a heavy reliance our own versions of the quick catch and shoot method.  The "bad offense" is 1) when we purposely work the clock, causing a lack of movement without the ball, or 2) when we get stymied by good defense early in the set and pull the ball back out to re-set, also causing a lack of movement without the ball.  In both cases our OUr guys to revert to a "set and shoot" system versus the quick catch and shoot method consistent with the good offense. The latter offense is easier to defend and OUr uys seem to get frustrated and end up taking shots that are just not good.  I am sure someone keeps track of this but OUr shooting percentage when the shot clock gets under 15 seconds has to be not very good (this is my perception at any rate).  Obviously our shooting percentage will be higher in the early part of the shot clock when you account for fast break points and the like, but I believe that there is a direct positive correlation between the movement to create an open shot and the "good offense" and a direct negative correlation between the "spot" shot method of old and the "bad offense"

All of OUr players have demonstrated the ability to catch and release but it seems to me that their fall back is the set and shoot method.  I feel like JG's offense was more of the latter  (move the ball to shooters) and JC's offense is more of the former (move the shooters to the ball).  If that is remotely true then it would help explain the tale of two teams we put on the floor in most games.

Related to this is my observation that one of OUr best catch and shoot players early in the year was Ivo Baltic.  His struggles, whatever they are, has changed OUr offensive sets at times (not to mention that his reluctance to shoot off a nice pass has eliminated some possibilities for assists.)

None of this is meant to be a slam or a criticism but is simply the product of an overactive mind that has nothing better to do than replay BOBCAT basketball games when it should be resting.
