Ran across this on an UA board.  It kind of gives me a different perspective on Dambrot and RooNation:

What do you think?

Nice to hear that story, though it makes rooting against Akron a teeny bit harder.

I'll certainly say that OUr program has been incredible about providing access after games. We go down on the court afterward every time we go. Our son shoots hoops and then gets autographs, and my wife and I always chat up a few players. Every one one of them is patient and gracious.

Nice to hear Akron's coaches promote the same atmosphere. If they beat us in Cleveland, I'll eat my heart out watching them in the tournament... but I will root for them to represent the MAC and win some games.

Asa much as he tries to hide it he has a pretty good heart......but it does not change my opinion of the institiution he works for......or of his actions behind closed doors at the MAC.

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Great story.  I like the comment from one of their posters saying they should put the story out to the media and while that seems like a great idea on the surface you would end up with 3,000 people trying to get in the locker room after every game.

Speaking of nice gestures, did anyone stay on the feed of the game after Saturday and watch D.J. make his way through the crowd?  He took several pictures with kids on the way to the radio interview and then stayed for more afterwards.  I imagine it was a pretty emotional day for him realizing that this is it for him here as a player.

I would like to stress that KD is  very strong as a coach and quite aware that 2nd chances are very important in his program.  I do not have any doubt that the kids in Akron receive many opportunities to get to interact with his program and those athletes involved with basketball.

The other area where I have seen a vast improvement is in the academics of the university.  A former Bobcat, Dr. Michael Sherman, is Vice President and Provost of Akron University. I have only heard excellent reports of his adminstrative skills with faculty and students.  He is making a drastic changes for the good of that university.  We l will have to contend with these improvements in the future as they are turning a corner to get away from the 'Urban Transcient University".

TO segue off OUVAN..even with Oldkatz herding us out of the COnvo the line outside of the locker room for autographs was still pretty deep 45 mins later. Reg and a few other Cats were very busy signing names to anything and everything.

That would require 3,000 people to be at every game.

Really, though, KD has done a very respectable job at Akron, they've been solid year in and year out under him.

Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat!

I'm glad to hear such high praise, as he and his family were great neighbors of mine growing up in suburban Columbus.

That's great to hear.  I'm not sure all athletes really realize how much something like that resonates with kids.  I know I still have a warm place in my heart for the athletes that went out of their way to acknowledge me when I was little.  I grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida so I saw a ton of Spring Training games. Bud Harrelson, Jerry Koosman, Dick Groat, Stan Musial, Vada Pinson and Boots Day are guys that took a couple of minutes out of their collective days to make mine.  It can also work the other way.  Johnny Bench went from one of my favorite players to, well, not one of my favorite players. I'm fine with players not signing autographs or taking pictures but there is a way to do it and a way not to.   And it's now working it's way down to the next generation. The look on my son's face when Joel Hanrahan tossed him a ball from the bullpen was priceless and he is now one of his favorite players and probably will be forever.
