New AD in Buffalo. Guess he wanted to make his mark.

Reg had two years left on his deal. I thought he'd get next season. I was wrong.

Wasn't aware of that -- makes more sense now I guess. Wonder if he has his man in mind already?

I'm surprised.  While Reggie hardly overachieved, I think he did get Buffalo to a pretty good place.  He had a great team in 2005, and probably should have made it to the Big Dance, but thankfully Leon did not agree.

I'm skeptical that they'll be able to hire anyone who can do better.  I'm happy to see they want to take the program higher, as that is better for the MAC, though.  Tough job up there.  If he played in the West, he'd likely could've had one of the top teams.  It's rough going up against Kent, Akron, and us every season.

Best of luck to Reggie.  I always liked the guy.

Very surprising when you consider they have next year's frontrunner for MAC POTY, a promising young guy in Skeete, and they figure to have Oldham back.

Yet they keep Jeff Quinn?

We wouldn't have been happy with the results that Reggie put up.  Why should they be?  I understand he did a great job making them respectable but after respectable you still need to go up.  He didn't do that.  We remember 2005 like it was yesterday but that was 8 years ago. Think about that.

Bit of a watershed time for the league.  A number of coaches being released.  Who will they all hire.  How serious will they be.  Our last two hires are an indication of Ohio's view of the program:  hired a top flight assistant from OSU, followed by hiring the most successful league coach (and adding to it) in history.  We are committed.  Who will they bring in?

I agree. Keeping my fingers crossed that this means that both schools are stepping up their commitment to hoops.

I get the feeling that Louie is becoming the Abe Vigoda of MAC coaches. Whenever a coach gets fired, we'll reference that he still has a job.

You are right on that point. Maybe the coach at Bryant will be moving up after this year and Reg can move over there. I am pretty impressed with the transition Baron made from RI to Cansius. There are gonna be openings and Reg's offensive scheme is pretty impressive if someone is looking at an assistant to tweak a similar scheme with better athletes and minds.

We are speaking of Beefs here.  So, you are not wrong.  Beefs is just off-schedule again.  Beefs is wrong, not you.

I think he'll be scarfed up pretty quick.  The guy took basically a nothing program and gave them seven winning seasons in 10 years, including 4 20+ win seasons.  I don't know where some of the bigger schools are regarding their coaching situation, but most any East Coast team that goes looking for someone this season will come knocking.

I cover UB for Queen City Sports in Buffalo. Here's my article on his firing: queencitysports.net/top-stories/ub-fires-reggie-witherspoon/

I really don't know if he'll be interested in coaching elsewhere. He's lived in Buffalo for the majority of his life and wasn't really known before taking over at UB. I could honestly see him hanging it up and finding another gig with basketball somewhere back in Buffalo when he's ready.

Could he coach somewhere else? Definitely. Will he? I don't know.

As far as the decision and how it's being regarded in Buffalo.....Shocking doesn't even begin to describe. Non-UB fans point to his subpar season and poor MAC Tournament results but those closer to the team point to him turning around a program from nothing into a consistent MAC contender.

Witherspoon was loved in Buffalo and well liked. But with a new AD, his time had come according to Danny White. I'm surprised. Never thought that Thursday night would be the last time I ever covered one of his post-game press conferences.

Last night, he did not sound like a man who thought he'd be out of a job. I think he got blindsided.

that s funny right there.

I am in the camp that say s he plateaued and was not getting it done. Fanbase leveled off. NO one went on the road with the team, the accomplishments were ok but not spectacular and given the national attention the FB program has flirted with and the poentila there as fara as rabid sports fans I thought is was time to go a couple years back

I love his system and he developes nobody players way past their perceived potential. Watt as POY? Please. He is cerebral and does a great job. If he finds a high major with a complex scheme that needs the offense perfected he will be in a great postion with probably much better pay. Look at guys like Buckley who are making as much or more as an asst and doing well. Reg has that ability. I like most of what he stands for a nd what he does.

I do think for the league to climb back onto legitimacy we have to upgrade the coaches. Status Quo will not work. I am not sure Keno Davs is his father. He may have reached his level at Drake. UT did a great job with their last hire. Kent notsomuch.

FOr now we just need to get better and dominate the MAC. Make our rep in the OOC and take advantage of the programs that are finding their way. That said there is a lot of talent league wide in the frosh and soph classes.....including whatever ends up staying at Buffalo.

Is this about replacing a coach who wasn't getting it done? Or is this about a new AD with a huge ego trying to show everyone he's the smartest guy in the room? It will be interesting to see where they are three or four years from now.

The answer to that could certainly go either way. And Borna's comments mirror my opinion.

Buffalo has some considerable talent coming back, while Ohio, Kent, and Akron lose a lot. Out could turn out to look like a genius move short term, and disaster if the guy can't bring in equal or better talent.
