It's interesting how many of the guys on the list are from the late-1980s and early 1990s.

It really was a golden age for basketball at the pro and college levels...even just stylistically.

Then the Pistons had to ruin it.

It was before so many guys were leaving after one or two college seasons.

We need a DJ Dime Night promotion as he climbs up this list. Pick a random Wednesday night game (EMU would be a good candidate). Sell upper bowl tickets for $.10 and give everyone a coupon to buy any concession item for $.10. There could be big dime cutouts in the OZone and someone could man a DJ's Dime Meter, adding a dime for each assist, similar to the strikeout meters at baseball games.

No doubt his jersey should hang in the rafters. Imagine if him and Trent were together here at the same time.

If those 2 were on the same team, we may be a national championship contender. That would be an unbelievable squad...wow!

It would also be good to accept donations to the March of Dimes.

I'm thrilled we have a player past Chris Duhon. He always rubbed me the wrong way.

Agreed, JSF. The more I study this...it is amazing that we will have a player finishing among these guys. It's an absolute who's-who list of college basketball.

Hurley, Corchiani, Blake, Anthony, Gottlieb, and Payton? Are you kidding me? WOW. I don't think any of us truly realize how lucky we are to have DJ on our side.

Some #'s

Currently at 125 games with 824 assists.
Last 5 games:  Averaging 10.4 apg

14 games left in the regular season.
At that pace, through the regular season he'd finish with 969.6.  Last year, we played 6 post season games.  If we did that again, he'd finish with 1032.  If he kept that pace up through the postseason, he'd need 16.7 games to break 1000.
Obviously the # of postseason games depends on our run in any postseason tourney we could potentially make and how many games we play in the MAC tourney.  Also, he isn't averaging 10.4 apg this season, he is averaging 8.3.  I am also assuming they count postseason games in all-time lists.  I have no clue if that is the case or not.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I would be interested to see how many of these guys even approached DJ's PPG average. He is not only assisting but scoring as well, having his hand in most of the points scored on any given night.

More all time top 25 stats that D.J. could have at the end of the year are games played (20 more games needed) and steals (26 more steals)

Not to be too great a dullard, but what is the origin of the term "dimes" for assists?  Back in the day, to "drop a dime" meant to give a tip regarding a crime.

Since I am waiting on a client to respond to some work, and I have no feet to treat – – took a look.

Maintaining his current average puts him over 950 assists after 1 post season game – so top 10.  If you look at the top ten players – he would finish #3 in points per game and #2 in rebounds (fraction below Miller – chance he would pass him for #1).

He would be the only player in the top ten to also average double figures (14+ points) AND 4+ rebounds.

Player                                                       Assist            Points               Rebounds

Bobby Hurley, Duke ............................  ..1,076              12.4                         2.2
Chris Corchiani, NC St. ....................... ...1,038             11.5                           2.1
Ed Cota, North Carolina.......................  . 1,030               9.5                           4.1
Keith Jennings, East Tenn..................      ....983             15.7                          3.9
Steve Blake, Maryland ......................    ......972               8.3                          3.4
Sherman Douglas, Syracuse.................       .960             14.9                          2.2
Tony Miller, Marquette ........................      ..956               8.3                         4.6
Aaron Miles, Kansas .............................    ...954               8.6                         3.3
DJ Coooper, Ohio                                         950+           14.6                         4.5

Greg Anthony, Port/UNLV ................       ...950             12.6                         3.1

BTW - finding DJ's stats proved difficult:

really athletic department - that is how up to date you keep the site?

The game notes are much better. Full page ad on DJ.

Game Notes

Including this:

HOW DOES 5 BECOME 1?
No player in the history of college basketball has ever recorded 2,000 points, 900 assists, 650 rebounds and 300 steals for a career. One current Bobcat has a chance to accomplish this feat.

In the history of college basketball, only 12 players have ever recorded 900 assists. That list is headed by names like Bobby Hurley, Chris Corchiani and Ed Cota, while also featuring Keith Jennings, Steve Blake, Tony Miller, Aaron Miles, Greg Anthony, Doug Gottlieb and Orlando Smart. Currently, Cooper has 818 assists and is just 82 assists shy of 900. At 820, Cooper will move into the top-25 all-time in NCAA Division I history in career assists.

Two players on the 900 assists list have surpassed 2,000 points. Those names are Sherman Douglas and Gary Payton. Of those two, only Payton had more than 300 steals. However, no one has ever reached 650 rebounds, until possibly this season.

To reach 2,000 points, 900 assists, 650 rebounds and 300 steals… D.J. Cooper would need to average in 35 games 11.6 ppg, 5.9 apg, 3.9 rpg, 1.2 spg.

Cooper has averaged at least 13.5 ppg for all three seasons and averaged 5.0 and 5.4 rpg during his freshman and sophomore seasons. His lowest spg total was 2.3 during his sophomore year, but during that time, he also averaged 7.5 apg. It stands to reason, that Cooper has a legitimate shot at putting up career numbers no one has ever seen before.

Good stuff Ted, but the site should be updated from two years ago.  Especially helpful to media looking for quick info - ala is bio.

The last paragraph of what you posted shows they probably looked at the site and pulled numbers - since they did not provide his junior year stats.  Quite lazy on their part.

That would have been amazing. That's all that team was missing.   I was thinking about how much Leon Williams could have used him as well.
