We've all wondered what's happened to Ivo Baltic throughout the year. His production seemingly went down game-by-game and all of the fans were left wondering "what if?" His sophomore and junior seasons may have brought too much hype and expectations were high, maybe too high considering the NCAA Tournament run.

The fact remains, he was a different player. The stat:

Last year: 86 free throws attempted.
This year: 13 free throws attempted.

Say what you want about the system, the coaching, whatever. Thirteen FTs from a starting forward is not good. Not good at all. Get to the paint and get fouled. Then make them.

As a team, FT attempts were also down.

This was a huge factor...prolly your 3rd best player last year.

He obviously had a confidence issue and it affected his energy?
You can get in a shooting funk, and still rebound, run the floor, bring some energy. not an easy thing.....but

If he woulda upped last years performance...wow.

Too bad to see this from a senior....you hate to see a player who seems to have a good head on his shoulders and a lot of energy regress........

An entire year was wrapped up in one play last night.  Someone in the Chat called it cowardly. Was certainly something most players at any level make a different choice.

YOu figure out the thought behind that move and you will find the answer to what happened this year.

I know exactly what play you're talking about. ESPN2 replayed it too, but I was in a bar and couldn't hear what the announcer said about it.

Something to the effect of "Ivo Blatic has a wide open lane to the rim and inexplicably chose to stop and shoot a difficult fade away."

Unfortunately that plays sums up what I will remember about Ivo's career at Ohio.

Lack of aggression and lack of confidence will kill you in most sports, especially hoops.

I can hear the high school cheer squad now: B-E-A-G-G-R-E-S-S-I-V-E, aggressive, be, be aggressive.

I will also remember 3 senior year games against Akron: 0 Points against the Zips....0.
Was in a bar with OHIO buddies as well watching a dude give up a lay-up for a 15 foot fade away.

I'm sure it will work in Europe though.......

It was only about 8-10 from where he left the floor

Ha...thanks Born...watching games in a bar always adds 5 more feet to a shot!

We finally have a winner.  If you want to hit the coaching, this would be about 80% of the reason.  But all this other stuff about 1 for 20 or whatever other reason you want to lay the less-than-optimal results this year to, it starts here.

No one gets any joy from that.  But facts is facts.

If you've been watching, you've seen it.

I guess you gotta give JC credit for honoring the past and being loyal as having Ivo on the floor this weekend was a total liability.  Obvious to me, obvious to you and the obvioius on the stat sheet.  Other than what he's meant to the program in the past and his being a senior, I saw little reason for him to get into either game.  He was just a very athletic guy you could pass the ball to, that would pass it right back to you.  He was one of the main reasons that this year didn't end up like last year, but JC kept him in until the very end hoping it would come to him, even though everyone knew it wasn't going to happen.

The change actually started late in the MAC season last year. I think it was around that fateful Toledo/EMU debacle. I still contend it's related to his lack of confidence at the foul line including throwing up an air ball from the line. If you look closely at those FT stats you will find Ivo did not attempt a FT thru our entire MAC championship nor NCAA run last year. He simply lost all confidence at the line and thus avoided taking it to the rim at all costs. Subsequently he abandoned the true strength of his game, his drop step and spin quickness and what you must have from the small forward position. Taking it and mixing it up at the rim.

We got away with it last year in prime time IMO because we didn't have any 1 for 20 nights from the 3 and Ivo himself hit some of those fade aways during that stretch. The shame is if you look at his soph year he attempted 120 plus FT's and finished an impressive 78% at the line, second only on the team behind Tommy.

Frustrating.

That play did sum up the last year and a half for Ivo.  Even my wife, who doesn't follow basketball all that closely, yelled "Why did he do that?"   Northern Iowa seems so far away.

Thanks for reminding me of that play again.  You did forgot to add the shot was an air ball.  How can you do that from 8 -10 feet?  As for being on the floor at all, I really like tj hall but guys he can foul faster than anybody i have ever seen.  I really hope he learns to stop using his hands and move his feet next year.  Other things i hope to see include not playing three 6'3" or less guards most of the game.  Because the other telling stat in the Akron gmes is the way they killed us on the boards in the two big losses.

That baffled me, too.  Seems to be more than just confidence; there was nobody there to defend against him.  Something else is up with him.

Though I'm sure your stats don't lie, for me Ivo 's decline started this year.  I distinctly remember in the NCAA last year that Ivo made a number of key shots with nifty moves around the rim.  These were against Michigone, USF, and I think UNC too.  I'm as perplexed as anyone else at what happened to this young man.  I believe sometime early last season I even made a prediction on here that Ivo was going to end up being a pro prospect.  At the time I wasn't thinking about the EBL!  (No offense, borna)

Can we put Ricardo's head in Ivo's body/skill set.  We could use that guy.  Ricardo's aggressiveness + Ivo's skills = a difference maker for this team.  When people ask me what's up with this team I simply refer to my belief that we haven't been playing with a full deck all season.  DJ & Reggie sold all year.  Walt 75% of last year.  Nick 60% and Ivo of late 0%.  I appreciate the loyality JC has shown Ivo with only the 2nd team status as I'm not sure he would enter the game if I were coaching at this point.  I'd rather increase Ricardo's, Smith's and Reggie roles and even play Kadeem in physcial games like vs. Akron vs getting what ivo is bringing to the table right now.  Kadeem would at least give you 1-2 put back buckets and someone to be committed to the lane for a few minutes a night versus fade-away jumpers, passes at the ankles and no interest in being inside.

I thought there would never be the day where I saw someone question Walt's intensity and selling out percentage. Not sure I agree with that.

In no way, shape or form am I questioning Walt, one of my favorites.  And you could especially tell he was playing all out in Cleveland on every trip down the court.  I just think he was a bit less effective this year than I had anticipated going into the season.

Agree, George. Walt is the one player on the team I would say takes no plays off. Always giving it his all and the one player not afraid to take it to the basket aggressively and mix it up inside both offensively and defensively. Too bad he's only 6 - 3.

I agree, I think Walt never took a play off.  Seems like a great guy and player.  IMHO, he was just outta position his years here.  Would be a good #2.  Had major problems around the rim vs the Bigs.  But, what do you expect, as was said the guys is only 6'3" and has also had four knee operations.  Just doesn't have the ability to get up like he probably could during his prime!

Akron dared us to attack the rim and we either could not or would not.

Baltic just isn't an attack the rim guy.  We all think he could/should be.  But, he's not.  Still a huge part of a great 3 years for Ohio basketball.

The thing that's mystifying is that for 2.5 years he was in attack mode. About the middle part of last year, the switch was flipped to non-attack mode.

I agree that Walt never takes plays off but I think there are times where he just needs to more aggressive and/or selfish on the offensive end.  He and D.J. are the only players we have that can effectively drive.
