With all the sport talk big-shots gushing Sunday night that (cough-cough) "the little guys are finally getting a fair shake" (since when is a school with an enrollment of about 30,000 "little" anyway???) - the mtsu blue faders who just lost to #184 in the nation FIU in their first game of the SunBelt (a crappy conference) turn around and get crushed in their mulligan game proving they had no business in the big dance when a team like Maryland had two wins over #1 seed Duke and had a SOS of 100 spots higher.

What mtsu's collapse does is hurt the chance for "mid-majors" to get at-large bids as much in the future.  Fans of teams in the MAC can't be thrilled about this.

Before anybody stokes up a lecture on their record or that they did have an early season upset (at home) over Ole Miss, I am already plenty familiar with their team.  I live 19 miles from their campus.

Sorry but they belonged in the dance a heck of a lot more than Maryland did.  Maryland's entire resume is beating Duke.  They played no one and I mean no one (unless you think playing Stony Brook at home is something) out of conference and they played all of them at home.   Their lone road game OOC was mandated by the Big Ten-ACC challenge.  Plus they had a losing record in conference. I grew up in Maryland and am a big Maryland fan but they had no business getting a bid.  And Middle Tennessee State lost to a pretty good mid so I'm not sure how this is a such a black eye for mids.

I wouldn't exactly say they got "crushed".  13 points isn't all that much to lose by, especially when you see how MTSU was fouling late when they were down 10.

 It was a 5 point game mid way through the second half. And considering SMC shot 57% from 3 I'd say MTSU was good to have kept it as close as they did.

Here's my my answer to Maryland and other such teams (i.e. Iowa with their ranking of #29 in the latest Sagarin ratings), win your conference tournament.  Beat your opponent on the b-ball court.  If you lose, oh well.  Win and you're in.  It's as simple as that.

Belmont beat them worse than they beat Ohio.  I saw both games.   And they lost head-to-head to Akron, so they wouldn't have won the MAC - a good mid-major league.  If mtsu had stayed in their old conference (the OVC) they probably would have finished in 3rd or 4th place behind Belmont, Murray, and maybe even EKU.

Now they lose 6 seniors, so at least we won't be having any more mtsu conversations for a long time.

Are you a Bobcat and a mid-major fan, or a Buckeye, Dukie, or Wildcat?  The reason schools such as MTSU should always get this game is that the only way they get a shot like it otherwise is to play on the road against the ACC or B1G because ALL of the schools in those conferences don't have the guts to go play MTSU (or Ohio, etc.) at MTSU's barn.  It's the major flaw in the use of rankings vs the Top 50 or 100 in the RPI, and also SOS.  It's where the NCAA could step in an "force" teams to honor 1 for 1 games for a certain percentage of their schedules, and say that they can't all be against fellow big money conference schools. That makes all the measurables used to talk about bubble teams more legitimate.

Florida steamrolled a lot of good teams this year.  I guess by your definition Marquette didn't belong in the tournament because they got stomped by Florida 82-49.  Missouri lost to them 83-52.  They beat Florida State 72-47. They beat Wisconsin 74-56. 

By your standards Belmont doesn't belong either since they lost to Tennessee State. Sounds to me like you have an axe to grind with MTSU.

Teams from other conferences haven't played them at their place?  Ole Miss did.  Vandy did a couple of seasons back.  So did Belmont last season.  Kansas has played them there.  As has North Carolina. 

That's not so bad considering the poorly lit dump they play in is way overdue to be renovated.

As far as a home-&-home mandate, I don't think it will happen.   If North Carolina hosts Presbyterian College in a November game, do you really think they won't mind going to Clinton, SC and playing in a 2000 seater (the football stadium holds a whopping 6500  !)  The AD's and presidents at the mega-schools will shoot that proposal down in a heartbeat.

I am having trouble following the point of this thread. Mid-majors are in trouble in the future because one Mid-major, MTSU, lost to another Mid-major, Saint Mary's? Is that right?

I don't think it will happen either.  But let's suppose Carolina, Ohio State, Kentucky, etc. were REQUIRED to give 1 for 1 on 40-50% of their non-conference schedule.  Pipe dreams, I know.

I think the point at the beginning is that someone just dislikes MTSU.

My only point was I have no sympathy for the majors, like Maryland, Iowa, etc. complaining that they didn't get in because a losing or average team from a small conference won their league tournament, thereby reducing the availability of at-large's for the majors.  I think conference tournament winners, no matter the size of the conference, deserve a spot in the Big Dance.
