Are these going to available online after they air, for those of us out of reach of WOUB/STO?

Wished they would've shown more highlights from the Michigan and USF games, but the first episode looked great! Looking forward to seeing the rest of them!

Highlights from the NCAA tournament cost a lot of money. I remember Evan told me how much and I was taken aback.

Unless I'm not remembering correctly it looks like Christian is a little tighter about where he'll allow the cameras.

I believe the game highlights are being done almost exclusively by students this time, but they have looked pretty good.

Agreed.  It gives a different perspective on some of D.J.'s ridiculously good passes.

Perhaps Christian didn't insist that he be front and center in every possible scene, a la Groce.  That's why I was always so impressed with the football series - Frank doesn't care about screen time.

I, for one, want Ohio's head coaches getting all the screen time they can get. Modesty is not a virtue for the Recruiter-In-Chief of a program. Ohio won't  have another recruiter of Groce's caliber any time soon.

Can we at least give Christian a chance to recruit before judging him?  On paper, anyway, I like what I see from some of the guys coming in next year.

Not to mention the limitations on footage are tremendous. I believe on SC we could run something like 3 minutes an hour of game footage. Makes it very hard to cover adequately the early rounds. Also, you only had a 48 hour window following the game to show clips from it without separate licensing, which obviously makes breaking down the upcoming games practically impossible.

The net effect is that it's impossible to compete adequately with CBS/Turners studio and highlight shows, which I'm sure is the goal.

I think you inferred a criticism that wasn't there. Complimenting a person doesn't diminish another. Someone took a potshot at John Groce. I think it's a dubious potshot, considering Coach K did American Express commercials and John Wooden was the voice of the freaking Hartford insurance company. It's a profession that lends itself to being out front, putting a face to a program.

Groce has (at least an share of) Greg Oden, Mike Conley and D.J. Cooper on his resume. No one expects Jim Christian to be landing the consensus best player in America,  NBA Lottery point guards or another D.J. Cooper — a once in a 20-year player.

I expect Christian'll land really good basketball players for Ohio and win a bunch of games, but I don't expect Ohio to be pushing out No. 1 picks anytime soon.

My "potshot" was based on our ex-coach's insistence on being front and center at the expense of screen time for the players, who we as viewers were really tuning in to see.  Contrast that with Frank Solich's hands-off approach to the football series.  Made the football version much more insightful and enjoyable.  I thought the trip with Groce to get coffee at Starbucks, where he was hailed as the conquering hero, was especially insightful.  Guy was an ego-maniac. That's OK, but I'm enjoying JC's personality a lot more.

You're quite upset that you couldn't watch more players say highly inoffensive, coached platitudes in a paid infomercial disguising itself as a television show that lacks conflict or storytelling, aren't you?

well heck Drew

you can get a big dose of Groce on the TnT series out in Champaign.

can even join the discussion of and share you r view of how Groce occupies the camera too much on the thread

I think he does a great job. Granted every press conference and every answer coming from an athlete falls into what he wants said and there is very little time where any athlete is on their own but that is his style and that is how he runs a program. On the whole, it is probably pretty good considering what some of these kids are capable of saying.

Personally I enjoy listening to him and hearing what is inside his head and try to figure out how he does what he does. I enjoyed the series on UK ball this season as it featured much of Coach cal and how he teaches and treats kids and gives an insight as to what motivates and moves him to pursue coaching at that level.

Kids will come and go and their stories are not as interesting to me as the guys who put the programs together. Everyone has a personal like. I understand your likes to be the players and appreciate that.

JC has a different spin and that is good too. This is a veteran group of p;ayers that has been through many press conferences and post games along with the hoopla of 2 NCAA tourneys and advancing rounds. THey should feel very at home in front of the camera....and maybe JC is different from JG in that regard. I tend to be more like JC. I go on camera and lecture for my job but I prefer to just do work and not be the center of things. Everyone is different and sees their situation differently. I actually took the time to watch the Dambrot show.....that was different. Glad we do not have the opportunity to see him or the players in the locker rooom

I understand your perspective, Borna.  I just would have liked to see more on the kids themselves.

I enjoyed the JG Starbucks spot. Explained where some of the extra energy came from. As the program leader I am sure any extra star power only helps when sitting in a recruits living room.

My son attended the JG Camp at the Convo. As a PG He had the opportunity to work with NK, DJ and even Tommy was still around town before leaving for his professional career. All of the star power made the camp memorable.

However, the biggest impact came from Coach JG. His camp ending speech to all the kids and many of the parents was fantastic. It had little to do with basketball. My son still references that speech. Very similar response when he attended Franks summer camp. Both were fantastic examples for the kids. UM recently spoke to my sons jr high basketball team. Seems most of what he noticed was the inappropriate language. Something he never once heard from either coach Solich or Groce for the entire week.

On a side note: I love the giant window pictures uptown of Coach Solich and Christian. They are the face of both programs.

Tonight's episode was pretty good. It looks like they want to go the feature story route instead of being a fly on the wall, which I've been critical of in the past, but tonight's feature stories, especially the managers' intramural team, were very interesting. How unfair is it that Omni Smith is allowed to play a league game against typical OU students? I also liked the look-in to McDonalds. I would have liked the show to follow Stevie around in the aftermath of the big shot, but it was still a good episode.

I would probably crap my pants if Omni Smith walked onto the court I was supposed to play on. Of course, how many current students even know who he is? I enjoyed the guys supporting the team, though. Stevie's Christian impression was funny.

I was thinking that same thing about Omni, but like JSF said, who the heck would even know? Unless they are a grad student and that's still a big maybe.

I totally forgot about TJ Hall's knee surgery until this episode. Which makes his recovery and improved play even more incredible.
