Is Stephen Curry the Best Player We Faced in the Last Decade?

We played him in his freshman year at Davidson before he blew up. I can't think of anyone else we came up against who profiles as highly as Curry (he certainly overshadows his teammate Harrison Barnes), but I certainly could be missing someone. I thought his ceiling was "borderline All-Star," but now he's looking like a potential Hall of Famer and contender for "best shooter ever."

Would also be fun to come up with an All-Future Pro Opponent team. I imagine Austin Carr and Nate Thurmond are locks.

An interesting question. As I remember, he had a great game against us. I would say the others who are even close in the conversation would have to be Al Horford and Rajon Rondo. Joakim Noah was on that Florida team, but he didn't play in the game.

I was going to suggest this in the "state of the game" thread. For all complaining about where the game is headed, and rightfully so, if you ask me, along comes the skilled Curry like an angel in white wings. I hope this kid sends throngs heading to the gym. Too bad he's in Golden State.

I think Lamar Odom might be one of the most famous to play in the Convo in the past 15 or so years. Great thread.

I'd say at this point, David Lee has had just as good of a career. He has peaked though, while Curry is just now figuring it all out.

Greg Monroe is also really, really good (and young). He's actually probably been the best in the NBA we've played in recent years compared to others at his position (consistently that is).

I think it's pretty cool that he's in Golden State. Obviously, he could make a bigger impact in a big market, but you gotta love the little guys building a team that's capable of making noise in the league.

David Lee, Corey Brewer, Morris Twins, Thomas Robinson, and Andrew Nicholson are some other options.

That 2008 Kansas team was pretty good up and down the line.

Semantics, but I do not think Curry his frosh year was the "best " player we have seen. At the time he was a mere player. That he has blown up in later years does not make him the best player we have seen. I am not a fan of judging great players on their success in the league at a later time.Seems like their college games get revised. I heard a guy talking about Mugsy Bogues HS team as the greatest ever. He was basing his ranking based not on their success but on how many of them made it into the pros. I have seen some absolutely phenomenal players in HS who never made a mark in college or the NBA yet I would say they were the best players I had seen at that moment. COnversely, I have seen mediocre HS players become phenomenal Pros.

Steph Curry is reaching his potential and finding his stride. He is becoming an elite player, Muncie Central played vs Zach Randolph, Mike Conely, Greg Oden, Josh McROberts, Eric Gordon, Jeff Teague and many others that are in the league...of those Randolph, Oden and GOrdon were dominant and at that level the "best" we played against but they are not hot NBA household names like CUrry.

Best college players....I like Chalmers, Lee in that list. They were pretty good college players and certainly were responsible for a large part of their teams success.

Southern Cat, I had not heard that about Davidson to the Atlantic 10. Is that a done deal?

I get tired of all these schools moving to better basketball conference than the one WE are in. Jealousy on my part.

I didn't mean at the time (Curry wasn't yet special when we played him), I meant who they became down the road.

There is hyperbole about how great some players/teams were in HS, and then there are the Dunbar Poets.

The 1981-1983 Dunbar teams are (arguably) the greatest HS team of all-time, with David Wingate, Reggie Williams, Reggie Lewis and Muggsy Bogues on the team.

The 1981–82 Dunbar Poets finished the season at 29–0 and finished 31–0 during 1982-83, and were ranked first in the nation by USA Today. They had 3 players drafted in the 1st round of the 1987 NBA Draft, and David Wingate was selected in the 2nd round of the '86 draft

all 4 had excellent College careers
Muggsy Bogues - Wake Forest (avg 14.8 points, 9.5 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 3.9 steals per game his senior year)
David Wingate - Georgetown (won a national championship in '84, lost in final in '85)
Reggie Williams - Georgetown ('84 champs, '85 runner up, '87 Elite 8, leading scorer in the Big East his Senior year)
Reggie Lewis - Northeastern

All 4 got drafted by the NBA and were successful
Reggie Williams - played 10 years for 6 teams
David Wingate - played 15 years for 6 teams
Muggsy Bogues - played 15 years for 4 teams
Reggie Lewis - played 7 years for the Boston Celtics before his untimely death during practice.

A few years ago, I would've thrown Joakim Noah into this discussion. He's never quite become the player I expected. On second thought, did he get in the game in Nashville? I can't remember. I know he was buried on that bench.
