And, aside from the Ivy League, it could be the toughest academic conference in the nation.

“It was a big jump, it’s not even comparable,” said Jacobs, a psychology major, of the academic rigors at Colgate. “I can’t talk to kids (at Ohio) about academics anymore because it’s just so much different over there.

Anybody know what he majored in at OU? That might have something to do with it. I can imagine that if he was a Communications major at OU and was used to 500 person lecture halls that small classes with teacher-student interaction might feel more challenging.

maybe his superior intellect can help me solve this math equation: 6'10" + 220lbs = 0 playing time. I tried for 2 years to figure that one out.

Keep in mind that he was taking freshman/sophomore classes here. Now is taking junior/senior classes at toothpaste. As a senior I can tell you classes get substantially harder often sophomore year.

You know what Frank Solich likes most about coaching in the MAC? While he gets older, his coaching competition stays the same age, man.

His last profile at Ohio didn't list a major, so maybe he hadn't declared.  Anyway, each school's academic experience is what the individual makes of it.

Ethan:  Yeah man, class was cool today, we learned about Pi.
Ethan's lowly OU friend:  Like cherry and apple and stuff?
Ethan:  No, the number pi...no E.
Ethan's lowly OU friend:  They told you there is no E in Pie?
Ethan: No we were talking about a different Pi, you know like the ratio of circumference to radius.  3.14 or so.
Ethan's lowly OU friend: What kind of pie is only 3.14 inches around?
Ethan: Just forget it man.

Best wishes Ethan, but what a stupid quote.

Wow, aren't we a defensive group today.  We look down at our noses at "inferior" institutions like Akron and Kent and when someone draws a similar comparison to us we get all huffy.

And speaking of colleges, has anyone taken a look at all of the Miami signage in the Columbus airport recently?  It's all over the place and quite impressive - Ohio's public Ivy.

You've got a point...its a tough mirror in which to gaze.  I have been university shopping with my son (HS Junior). When he talks about the Bobcats he refers to them as "us" and "we".  But, honestly, Ohio is a tough sell when his grades and test scores could land him almost anywhere.  Don't get me wrong -its not that I don't love OU. - I think its still on his list, but honestly its a "safety school".  I'd be living in denial if I were to pretend that its standards for admission are as demanding as the other schools my son is considering.

But El, NW and Illi and Indi don't have very good football teams.  Why would someone go there in that case?

El Gato - Illinois is one of the states that I cover.  Two questions - where does he go to high school and what does he want to study in college?  Send it PM if you don't want to post it publicly.  Understood.

You only attend football teams in the SEC.

Is he good enough for HTC? No other university in the country has an academic model similar to HTC.

Are people really under the impression that our academic programs stand up to Northwestern or Michigan?

Those are very good schools with some very selective programs and top of the line graduate programs.

I love OU - grew up around Athens and went to the school - but for someone with top of the line test scores and ambitions, OU is largely a safety or scholarship situation. You can argue exceptions on a couple programs, but as a whole I don't think we should be so delusional as to claim OU is a top-tier academic institution.

Ohio University is a top-tier college experience.  An Ohio University degree will not hold you back in a job search.  If for some reason it does, I'd say you probably wouldn't want to work there anyways.

This is from a Mechanical Engineer with a Master's Degree who emerged as the first to complete their work after the "big" cheating scandal in the department.  Didn't hold me back at all, and it has done nothing but serve me well since then.

As is always mentioned when this discussion comes up....the social experience did a lot for me as well and I've found a lot of success in the Management/Sales side of business.

Moral of the story...you likely only get one chance at this, do what your heart tells you, not what some book of stats says you should do, as you'll find when you hit the real world, those stats rarely mean anything.

The graduate programs a school have nothing to do with (well, shouldn't have anything to do with) picking an undergraduate program.

Depending on the program you want to study*, the HTC is a great way to go. Great kids, great people in the college's office, and the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards (not strictly HTC, but their office is also in the HTC's building) has a great track record.

*HTC doesn't really have engineering programs, but as another poster already said, Ohio's engineering is pretty good.

And if your son is looking at a field where he'll be getting a graduate degree immediately/soon after graduation, going to a top of the line/hoity-toity (i.e. expensive) undergraduate school won't make a difference: most programs that I'm aware of look at GPA and MCAT/LSAT/GRE scores. In my first year of grad school (a life science Ph.D. program) we had 2 kids from Ivy League schools in our entering class. Neither of them had the grades to continue to the 2nd year.

All depends what you're studying. I can tell you pretty confidently there are only a handful of schools in the country that could have prepared me as well for my chosen career as Ohio.

I'm a current student and I as well could have went to many other schools (29 ACT composite in high school), and I can say my freshman year taught me a lot. It sounds like the guy above's son is smart enough to go to graduate school though, so why not consider going to OU for an undergrad, then a Northwestern or other university for a graduate? Or maybe even OU for the graduate degree. Hell, my mother has an associate's, bachelor's, and master's from Ohio
