Gets 18 months probation and suspended diver's license for 6 months. Jail time was suspended, $5,000 fine waived.

Thoughts?

First-time offender, sounds about right.

I hope this is his last brush with the law.

Waiving the fine seems wrong to me.

hard to say he's getting off easy when he has a felony conviction on his permanent record. Good luck getting a job with that.

Arresting him seems wrong to me. Way bigger things we need to be spending money on than some guy selling alittle bit of weed on a college campus. Probably got strong armed by the prosecutor and likely had a crappy lawyer. Too bad...

Have to agree with this. I feel like what he got was pretty standard when it comes to first timers, even if it was a third degree felony charge.  Jailing him would of just been a giant waste of taxpayer money.

His life will probably be made a living hell if/when he comes back next year from pretty much all opposing student sections all season long.  I feel like that's punishment enough :P

I think with the conviction, he's probably done at Akron.  He has two serious violations of the student code of conduct:

* Use, possession, manufacture, cultivation, distribution or facilitating the distribution of marijuana or any narcotic, hallucinogenic, or other controlled substances as defined in applicable federal, state or municipal law.

* Commission of any felony or misdemeanor under applicable federal, state and municipal law.

He entered a guilty plea -- not no contest -- so basically he has admitted to both violations.  Even though he would be entitled to a hearing, it would be difficult to overcome the guilty plea.  He should be through at Akron.

Wow.  Who the hell pleads guilty?  I assume the sentencing is the way it is because he is cooperating with the authorities.

The key is selling. He wasn't just using. He had a 5-pound package of it. That's many thousands of dollars of it. By Ohio law, that's a sentence of 1-5 years, but as others have said, as a first-time offender, that sentence sometimes is suspended.

Akron seems to be keeping the window open...slightly.  They have stated that he is "indefinitely suspended" and that his status will be determined "at a future date."  Would not be at all surprised to see him appear in uniform when the MAC season starts.  We're talking Dambrot, after all.

That was months ago when he was arrested.  He still hadn't gone through due process in the court.  Now that he's a convicted drug dealer, and by his own admission at that, it's a whole new situation.  If they keep him on campus, they'll have trouble expelling ANY convicted drug dealer.

I didn't see that one.  But he also has due process rights under the student code of conduct, so they can't just boot him out.  Given the circumstances, though, I can't see how they keep him on campus, let alone on the b-ball team.

Right, and along with it, they said the university would still review his case, according to this story:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/mac/2013/06/10.../

He may be kicked out of the school, at least for a certain amount of time, although I suppose there is a possibility they could suspend him as a student and then let him return in time. Then the basketball team could have a decision to make again. I still don't think it's too likely he'll be playing for Akron again, but I do think the Zips aren't ruling out anything yet.

Also, a felony drug conviction means automatic loss of government-backed financial aid.  There goes the schollie.

Is an athletic scholarship necessarily government backed?  Donors also fund scholarships so there's a loophole.

I would not be surprised if he were back after a period.  Dambrot and the University might just want to wait until the smoke clears (sorry) a little bit.  Dambrot will play any angle to get an advantage...we've seen that before.  When he was coaching St. V/St. Mary high school, the OHSSA had to stop him from playing two overseas transfers who couldn't speak English and hadn't passed the necessary proficiency tests.

Color me surprised if he plays. Dambrot would have A LOT of explaining to do with a convicted felon on the floor. I think that would say something about the priorities of the program and the university....something that no one wants to admit.

If Abreu ever plays at Ohio I know one thing is certain, in the words of the late and great Charlie Coles,

"That OZone is gonna be rockin!"

You know what Frank Solich likes most about coaching in the MAC? While he gets older, his coaching competition stays the same age, man.

The real O-H-I-O

Exactly.  Which is about 98% of people that are charged with a crime.

Come on guys.  There's more to this than him simply taking a plea bargain.  You get 5 pounds of pot delivered to you and you don't go to jail?  Me thinks Either Abreu has one dumb buddy who mailed him pot, or Abreu has handed the police a lot of information.  (Or I watch too many crime damas on TV.)

Either way, its bad for Akron basketball.  And MAC basketball.

Just before he goes into the witness protection program.

Which makes me wonder:  If he gets a new identity in the witness protection program, would he get four more years of eligibility?
