I was there. I was 10. Some one gave me a Paw poster that I think I still have somewhere. Partied with my parents and other Cats in the basement of Varsity Club.

It won't be the same venue, I don't have time to go to my parents house and find that poster, but I will be partying at Varsity Club and I hope that the outcome is the same this year.

Combined a Bobcat win over an o$u that evening almost 2 decades ago with another one of my favorite past-times after the game - catching a Willie Phoenix concert at a High St. bar.

Bonus points to anyone on here, other than SBH and cc cat, who's ever heard of Willie Phoenix, let alone seen him in person. Alan?

I'd love to hear more about what that win was like and the aftermath.  Was OSU any good that year?  The feeling of euphoric triumph and interactions with all your OSU fan friends is hard to fathom.

Also, does anyone have a list of all-time meetings between Ohio and OSU?

Now there's a blast from the past.  If I'm not mistaken, Willie played at one of the Green Weekends or was it Spring Fest?  Either way, I remember seeing him in Athens years ago.  19 years ago I followed the game from a national journalism convention.  Headed there again first thing in the morning.  Hopefully the outcome of the games are the same.

Ahhhh, the 94 game at St Johns... the best game that I went to, but never went to. Had tickets for the game and drove up with a friend and met people at the Varsity club before the game. We met up with my friend's Uncle/family friend that told us the bar bill was on him. Needless to say even though I had tickets I was in the Varsity club watching the game wearing my green cheering us on.

I think I remember stumbling into St Johns a couple hours after the game to see where our tickets were, remember they were good. Remember having my friend drag me around to some girl dorms he knew that went to college there and remember waking up next to one the next morning. Yep.. had a blast.

The best part was it set up my epic road trip to Charlottesville to watch us whip UVA.

I was at that 1994 game and the 1992 game in St. Johns.  The 1994 OSU team was bad.  OSU was dealing with two thugs: Greg Simpson and Charles Macon.  They had been arrested a few times for issues including: Failing to maintain control of a car, drunken driving, possession of Marijuana.  It came to climax when Simpson and Macon decide to pull out a gun and shoot at Simpson's roommate.  Another player, Rickey Dudley, was also in an alcohol treatment program at that time.  So, their program was in disarray and only won 6 games that year.  I think OSU had NCAA sanctions against them for some of those years due to the program's problems, as they were really horrible until 1998.

articles.philly.com/1994-06-16/sports/25835042_1_attackers-roommate-buckeyes

Still, even though OSU fans had plenty of excuses to fall back on, it was great to beat them. I mentioned in another thread there was a great Ohio turnout, a lot because of the high expectations of Ohio and low expectations of OSU.  The play of the game for me was when Gary Trent tried to go up for a dunk and didn't get enough height, he pins ball against the rim and comes back down.  OSU fans jeer him.  He takes the ball out to corner and drains a three.

The play-by-play guy for OSU was a guy named Terry Smith.  He called himself "the Voice".  He also did the Columbus Clippers games back then.  Biggest Pompous POS OSU D-bag you can imagine.  He took losing to Bobcats hard.  Ohio went on to win the Pre-Season NIT and jump into top-15 ratings.  Most of the Columbus media were jumping on Ohio bandwagon and giving lots of coverage (of course, lots of Ohio Alums in the Columbus media so they had personal interest too).  Smith was the Sports Director on WBNS Radio, which was on 1490am, not 97.1fm back then.  He had the afternoon radio show.  He spent a whole afternoon show ripping the Columbus Media for covering the OU basketball team because Columbus was Buckeye town.  He even called Dave Maetzold (then WCMH-4 sports anchor) and blasted him over the radio about their coverage of the Bobcats.  Never ever heard a media guy callout his media brethern like that.   He was the biggest OSU asshat I can think of.  Fortunately, it wasn't too long after that that Terry Smith moved out to California calling MLB games for the Angels.

Of Ohio Basketball games I've attended in person, I'd rank this Top 6.  I think my order would be:

1) 2010 Georgetown Win
2) 2012 Michigan Win
3) 2012 So. Florida Win
4) 2012  North Carolina OT Loss
5) 1994 OSU Win
6) 2005 Buffalo MAC Championship OT Win

I was there and I have a VHS recording of the entire game. Ohio fans took the place over. The Columbus Dispatch even commented that over half the arena was cheering wildly for the Bobcats. It was also cool that the Ohio pep band was there.

I was a 21 yr old Senior at OU and made the trip to Columbus with my roommate, Hooligan, and my fiancé (now wife). What a great trip! I cannot believe it's been almost 20 years since that game. We will all be in the building tonight, as well. 1804>1870. Go Cats!

Bobcat 110 has a good accounting of the game above.

I was there with my wife. It was the 1st game of the year. We were favorites to win as State was in a bad funk in that era and we were getting good press leading up to the game. Hunter even remarked that we were being set up with all the hype. I don't recall details of the game, but  we didn't play well in the 1st half which was close, then Trent took over in the 2nd half and it was over.

This was a powerful Bobcat team that followed this win with another at Virginia, then 2 more to take the Pre-NIT at Madison Square Garden. And then they played Kentucky to the wire in Lexington as Geno Ford played unconscious.  I think we were ranked 14th for a while, maybe even higher.

According to the record books, we are 4-15 all time against the Buckeyes. We won in 1969, 1971, 1973 and 1994. We also opened up Grover Center against defending champion and #1 ranked Ohio State in the 1960-1961 season. You can find the all time results for every season here and our all time records against every opponent here as well.

Side Note: We own the all time record against every D1 team in Ohio except Ohio State and Bowling Green

I was in St. John and had pretty good lower level corner seats thanks to a good friend whose dad was a major financial supporter and dedicated Ohio alum.  I watched the rest of the Pre-Season NIT  on TV -- UVA game from home, and the semis/finals from my folks place in northern Virginia. Heady times for the Bobcats. Even several months later, I would have people in other states see my Ohio gear and mention that run. Respect earned.

Willie Phoenix -- I booked his band  into the Frontier Room for a Friday night gig prior to his SpringFest performance in 1981. I was also part of the SpringFest Committee that year. Great show both days. He had recently signed with  A&M Records and some said he reminded them of Bruce Springsteen.  It never worked out that way for him.The best song I previewed on his demo tape was not played either day and didn't make it on to the record. Don't know why. BTW - I saw him performing solo outside North Market on a beautiful Saturday morning this summer. He looked about the same -- just a bit older.

Totally forgot about Rickey Dudley. Played football for the Buckeyes and was a darn good tight end. Until every year he played Michigan that is.

Was on the sidelines for that opening round pre-season NIT game. It turned into a whirlwind span of four great games.

We had a one-day turnaround before heading to Charlottesville to play UVA.

That may have been the loudest place I've been. UVA was good and the fans were loud when they came back from a big deficit. OU pulled it out decisively.

Then, onto NY over Thanksgiving for wins over GW and NMSt at MSG. Great memories there. Were ranked #14 I believe after the pre-season NIT championship. I have a photo with the trophy and Mike Tirico (nice guy) I'll have to dig up...

Yeah...he got drafted into NFL and played about 9 years there.

Apparently, Greg Simpson continued to be a dumbass:

Was a Senior at OHIO! It was great having a plastic cup thrown at my head by a disgruntled older Buckeye fan in the balcony section of St. John's Arena!! It was even better having my parents buy my roommates and buddies from Lakeview Apartments all our beer at the Varsity Club, they had their second date in 69' at the Ohio/ Ohio State bball game..

Thanks.  We are 4-8 since 1969...and only 2 of the 19 games were in Athens.

Great memories of that A&M game, as Vitale would say, "jubilation, baby".  Then on to Virginia and finally The Garden, a dream come true tourney. I still remember the 110 playing outside of MSG after the game. All the cabbies just stopped their cars in the street bringing traffic to a halt so they could hear the 110. The Bobcat faithful hung around in MSG after the game and the ushers threatened to throw us out. We were savoring the moment and they just couldn't understand why we hadn't vacated the arena within five minutes.

Tonight will make it six in a row for me: 3/86, 12/86, 12/91, 12/92, 11/94, 11/13. First one for my 12 y/o son. Loved 94 even though it was a bad osu team. 86 broke my heart--sophomore at OU. Should have won. Enjoy, GO CATS!!!!

One of best nights in my life nit championship in madison square garden with 5/6 fellow 1985 ou grads.
Unbelievable but true, band was marching down 7th ave after victory and had the traffic stopped for many blocks. Surreal!
Not sure how the cops allowed it.
One of greatest moments in bobcat basketball history.

Go bobcats, let's get another big win tonight

That UVA game was the loudest place I was ever at too... just insane when they came back after the 20+ point deficit we had on them. But they wasted all their energy on that run and we put them away... best atmosphere ever... especially running onto the court after the game and giving ol Trent a bear hug!
