OHIO UNIVERSITY SELECTS FRONT ROW MARKETING SERVICES TO SELL FIRST-EVER NAMING RIGHTS FOR PEDEN STADIUM FIELD AND THE CONVOCATION CENTER

24,000 CAPACITY FOOTBALL STADIUM AND 13,000+ CAPACITY COVOCATION CENTER ARE TWO OF COLLEGE ATHLETICS HISTORIC AND HALLMARK VENUES

ATHENS, OHIO – The Ohio University Athletics Department has announced a new partnership with Front Row Marketing Services, one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing sports and entertainment marketing firms, to secure naming rights for Peden Stadium Field and the Convocation Center. Front Row is a subsidiary of the Philadelphia-based Comcast-Spectacor that specializes in selling and evaluating commercial sponsorships as well as securing naming rights related inventory.

“Peden Stadium and the Convocation Center are two of the most time-honored properties in the MAC and greater collegiate athletics space” said Chris Lencheski, President for Front Row Marketing Services. “The Bobcat’s lair hosts some of the most exciting game experiences in Mid American Conference football and the Convocation Center serves as a multi-purpose event venue for the region and continues to be one of the NCAA’s most exciting atmospheres in college basketball, it is a privilege to be collaborating with Ohio University.”

“This is truly an exciting partnership for Front Row,” said Eric Smallwood, Senior Vice President for Front Row Marketing Services.  “Ohio University has a proud history and tradition in the MAC and Division I Athletics, offering the potential naming rights partner millions of impressions each month.  We look forward to contributing to that success.”

The 24,000 capacity stadium and 13,080 capacity arena are state-of-the-art facilities housing Ohio University’s prestigious Division 1 Football and Basketball programs. The venues are located in Athens, Ohio just outside of Columbus, Ohio’s state capital and largest market. Hosting its 85th season of Bobcats football and 45th season of basketball, Peden Stadium and the Convocation Center offer a previously unavailable sporting legacy for naming rights partners to engage NCAA fans, students, alumnus, and greater Columbus-area/Ohio consumers. Tune-in to ESPN2 tonight (11/19/2013) at 8:00PM EST to see the Bobcats take on Kent State live from Peden Stadium Field.

I was wondering when this would happen. I think this is a great idea. I know some will be unhappy with the removable of the venues traditional names, but the money we get from this will help move the program forward. My guess is we get a lot more out of renaming Peden than the Convo.

I'm a little ignorant in these things, but what will naming rights bring to Ohio University?  More money for renovations and such?

Bingo.

I am very excited about the potential this brings to move the program forward.

Bet anything you want - we will all still call them Peden and Convo forever...........................

And the "Naming Rights" names will change at least 2 times in the next ten years.......................

Are there any comps to get an idea of what the going annual rate is of some naming rights?  How much are we talking here?

Trying to get an idea if I can afford it or not so I can rename Peden Stadium "The Real Ohio Stadium."

Ummm, I think we need to set up a Kickstarter, or some other type of fund, to make that idea into a reality!

Maybe we could get the makers of the cheese-filled cracker/pretzel company to call it The Combo.

My hope is that these deals are set up similar to what was done for the Superdome in that they kept they original name of the building but added a sponsor to it (i.e., the Mercedes-Benz Superdome). It just seems incredibly foolish to expect people to suddenly call a 45- or 85-year-old facility by a completely different name.

I bet if we took Tevis' kick starter idea, so many people would donate to that cause just to piss off Ohio State. Let's do it.

I've seen quite a few negative responses to this, but I really don't see why it's a big deal, especially with The Convocation Center, which is probably the most generic name possible for an arena. There's dozens of other schools that have an arena with the same name, including two others in the MAC alone. Peden Stadium is a little different case because it's named after a person.

D.P. Doughm anyone?

In all seriousness though, I couldn't be happier that this naming right process is being done while McDavis and Schaus are in power. There are no two men I'd trust more to oversee a project in this regard.

I agree with others that this is an incredibly promising sign. Something has to be going on behind the scenes, and they need some cash flow to make that a reality. I'm betting it's not more books for the library.

The Domino's CryptoDome.

Think about it, it's a type of volcano formed by bulging lava, and the Cats produce a lot of free Lava Cakes...

I think it will definitely be Company X Convocation Center and maybe we could get a Company Y Field at Peden Stadium...

I agree, Van.  Especially the part about Athens being located 'just outside Columbus."  I'm sure that's news to all the basketball and football teams which travel into Athens for games.

Personally, I can see Ohio Health or Nationwide jumping on this right now simply based on the fact that they're already heavily involved with the university.  Ohio Health more so that Nationwide.  I'd be a fan of the Ohio Health involvement!

Scripps would be a logical idea as well.

I think it makes a lot of sense to make a deal with someone we already have some history with.

As important as it is to generate some money to help the program, I view a potential naming deal as more of a "partnership" as opposed to just a "sponsorship." I think whoever it is we agree to a deal with will not just be putting their name on our building but rather working with Ohio to expand the brand/program. Two way street. I think if this is handled right the benefits reach far beyond athletics.

I've seen crazier things happen.

I immediately thought that Holzer would get at least one of the facilities.

If Holzer had the interest and the right money, we wouldn't have had to hire an outside firm to find partners.

Perhaps this firm will market heavily in China and a company unwittingly shells out big cash. Would be the first time I wouldn't mind being confused with OSU.

My preference is the Zhôngguó yínháng Convocation Center

I doubt Holzer can afford what we would want for this.

OU Post quotes Schaus as saying they hope to generate "several million dollars" and that "the revenue could also go toward facility renovations but will be focused toward academics.  We're actually targeting revenue that we receive from these projects for academics . . . Our goal is to apply the resources we get towards academic services."
