Folks keep talking about redshirting one player or another to mature/muscle them up. Do we ever do that? I know that we may have a medical redshirt this year. How likely is it that we redshirt one if the other newcomers?

DJ Wingfield is not 100% healthy right now, and will probably be redshirting from what I hear. It makes sense with four seniors in front of him.

I could see him jump right into the starting lineup next year after they all graduate.

What about Harley? Could both he and Wingfield possibly redshirt? I don't see why not. With Ricardo and TJ both deserving starters time at the 3 and two seniors at the 2 as well there is not a lot of wing time available.

I am still not convinced Wingfield doesn't end up being more of a 2 for us. People have said he played some point in HS... Wouldn't that be something.

Maurice Pearson comes to mind. I believe that he came into the program as a 17 year old and a pretty lanky frame, so the plan was to give him a year to add weight/muscle.

Would have probably been a beast if not for a fateful combination of racism and airsoft guns.

The plan was to give him a year of MATURITY. Not much credence given to weight or muscle. From the first week it was decided that he needed more time to grow up.......

We were long on bigs and he was not ready for the locker room or college life. Really bright kid, intellect never in question.

Well in retrospect, seems like they were right about that one :)

I still think there was plenty of blame to go around with that whole incident however.

I'm still baffled by the signing of Harley. He's listed on the roster as 6'8", 170lbs. He couldn't possibly bang around with guys like Treadwell at that weight, Tree has him by 55lbs.

So why in the world did we rush out to fill a scholarship for a player that was already sitting out this year, and why do it with a kid we hadn't been following before and who wasn't heavily recruited by anyone else that isn't ready to play this year? I don't get it.

Harley won't have to bang with the big boys.  He is an outstanding shooter.  He'll play the 3

Maybe because he's good at basketball? You can't possibly dismiss someone based on height and weight without ever seeing them play can you?

Jon Smith is 6'7 180 and he holds his own just fine against bigger guys.

Harley grew a ton late in high school, right? If he keeps growing, look out.

He looked like he got a little more playing time in the scrimmage than a couple of our other recruits.

Another question- how much, if any, can a player play and still be able to redshirt?

They should be able to red-shirt despite playing limited minutes in the scrimmage last week. WMU's Shayne Whittington was recently suspended for two games because he played in a scrimmage for 6 minute during his red-shirt season:

The suspension is odd, but his res-shirt still stood that year.

Alright so Mompremier played quickly while Campbell, Harley and Wingfield all didn't see the court.

Mompremier was on and off so quick I didn't even notice how he played.
Could all 3 of the freshman who didn't play redshirt? That certainly isn't very common in college hoops these days. I like redshirts because having that extra year really is awesome come their 5th year... Good for the program and good for the kids (although sitting can be understandably frustrating)....
With as deep of a team as we have this year, I think it makes sense. Unless a freshman really shines it'll be hard to make an impact on a squad with as many upperclassmen as we have.

I have a hard time envisioning a scenario where we redshirt 3 guys, but we are deep with guys who can contribute, so I guess it wouldn't be the craziest thing in the world.

I can't imagine more than one guy redshirting and I don't expect any.  We've got nice balance in the classes right now.

King actually redshirted his sophomore year not his freshman year if my memory serves me.

Without looking it up, didn't Zach?

Looks like Wingfield and Harley will redshirt.

By season's end, I can't see both guys redshirting.  I could certainly see one though.

Zach and Maurice Pearson. Stephen King redshirted after playing as a true freshman.

Given the foul situation, I found that to be a little curious.
