Our team has got to figure out a way to cut off the baseline.  I stopped counting how many times this year they allow their man to dribble around the corner and take the ball along the baseline.  There is no help early, and by the time help gets there, a wide open guy is standing on the three point line on the opposite side of the floor.  When Ohio is in man defense, they get beat off the dribble, and in a zone, they miss assignments especially on ball reversals.  I know UMass shot lights out last night, but most of the nine 3 point shots they made were uncontested. 

Our guys did a really nice job last night of denying the entry pass to the low post, which is where most of the 9 steals came from.  I don't understand how they can be fundamentally strong in that aspect of defense, but cannot step on the baseline and just turn their guy back towards the frontcourt where the help is.  Good defense is accomplished by technique, focus and relentless determination.  Keep the ball in front of you, and you have a chance to beat anyone.

They might also want to work on stopping the dribble penetration.  I don't know how many times the guards got beat off the dribble and the bigs ended up fouling a penetrating guard.  Also led to the bigs foul problems.  I have a feeling this time might need to play some more zone at times.  Not sure why they didn't try to change it up last night.  I don't think I saw much zone other than on out of bounds plays.

Equally damaging, I thought, was their bigs cutting through the lane unguarded for an uncontested pass leading to easy looks.

It was great late in the game when Stevie was visibly trash talking Williams with a few minutes left, then promptly got burned on the opposite end by Mr. Williams which led to another easy bucket.  If I recall, he got a seat on the bench for the rest of the night right after that.  I love Stevie, but he had no right to talk smack about anything last night.

I realize there is a vast gulf between Alabama A&M and UMass, but as I posted elsewhere, the Bobcats did a really good job vs. the Bulldogs on cutting off penetration baseline and into the lane. 

Of course, against UMass, Ohio was facing one of the premier PGs in the nation in Chaz Williams.  He may be short, but he's explosive and incredibly quick, and thick enough to clear space on drives.  I noticed that the Bobcats were shading over second defenders to limit Chaz' penetration, but usually he made us pay with great passes to guys who were in position to score, or to guys who were draining threes. 

Also, the UMass players are very quick and athletic and able to create shots. 

The Minutemen have been slicing and dicing most of their opponents so far this year, so I don't think I'd judge Ohio's defensive progress on this game last night.

Jeff, agree with you there and I am not really judging the guards based on this game.  In general, I think we have been excellent with our hustle and determination on defense which is what defense is mostly about.  Last night just was not the case.  But, if we go anywhere in any tourney and even against better MAC teams, we are going to meet quick guards who can penetrate so our two point men better be ready for the challenge.  Besides, that keeps the bigs out of foul trouble and on the floor.

Exactly, though I think it goes beyond the two point men to also include Kellogg, Ric, Wilkins, Hall.

Just for balance - in the second half, where Williams was taking the ball up the court, the trash talk was all in the other direction from Williams to Taylor. And for the most part he backed it up, although I think it could have been way worse. Williams seemed really good, and giving up 11 points is fine by me.

It looked like there was a lot of talk going on from both teams.  I saw Putney several times running his gums, Jon Smith seemed to be chatting it up, Stevie is Stevie, obviously Williams is a...confident young man.
