Just scored a couple for the Harlem Globetrotters at Staples Center in L.A. on 2/16.  Just had to.  I am happy.

What are your feelings on the continued employment of the Washington Generals coaching staff?

LMAO!

Pete I have always wondered how you wound up as a walk-on on a MAC School message board and was not offered a full ride on a message board in the Big 10 or even an SEC message board. You deserved a bigger stage based on your talent.

The real question is, what did you have for lunch yesterday? Also, did you get any type of workout in? I mean, since you basically use the message board as a Facebook account, you might as well go all the way.

(Sorry, Russell, I couldn't resist.)

The Globetrotters were one of many "special guests" on the original Scooby Doo cartoon. Other special guests I can think of:

-Don Adams
-Jonathan Winters
-Sonny and Cher
-Batman and Robin
-Sandy Duncan
-Tim Conway
-Phyllis Diller
-Dick van Dyke

Love it. Classic BA thread drift.

Saw the Globetrotters in the late 50's when Wilt Chamberlain was on the team and Cab Calloway played at halftime. Hi-De-Ho!

One of my favorite SNL skits featured host Michael Jordan as Sweet River Baines, the first black Harlem Globetrotter. After about his tenth dunk, the ol' timey radio announcer goes "There's Baines with that move of his again."

When were the Harlem Globetrotters last in Athens?  I vaguely remember they came here in the 1980s, but I'm not sure about that as I didn't see them then.  I did take my kids to see the Globetrotters when the came to Murray, Ky, and we lived there in the mid 1970s.  Great All-American show!

Been fortunate to be able to catch the GLobetrotters about every 3 years since I was a kid. CUrrently have a kid from Ball State playing for them nicknamed Cheese...THey were at WOrthen a couple of years back and seem to spend MLK in Indy a lot.

I found out something I never knew about them this past year. The original trotters were not from Harlem...or even NY. They were made up of remnants of  a HS team out of the CHicago Public League...Phillips High players to be sure. THey were Illinois based and did not play in Harlem for fourty years.  DOn;t know how that fact escaped me all those years.

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Winter comes and asks how you spent your summer.....

And according to an LA Times story from last year, their originator and first coach, Abe Saperstein, came up with the idea for the 3-pt shot in 1961 when he was commissioner of the American Basketball League.

I saw them play when I was a kid. I was too young to realize it was a show so I thought they were the best players in the world and the Generals were a bunch of clods off the street. Meadowlark Lemon got into a fight with one of the Generals players. Everyone kept waiting for the laughs but they never came and he stormed into the locker room and didn't return until the second half so obviously is was the real thing. Several years later I read the books about Connie Hawkins and Wilt Chamberlain. Both said Lemon was a terrible player. One game got uncomfortably close and the Globetrotters weren't able to do a lot of their comedy routines. Lemon kept reminding Red Klotz, the Generals' "player/coach" it was their job to lose. Finally Klotz said something like, "well, maybe if you could play worth a s---, we would."

They're still fun to watch, no matter how old you are or how many times you've seen the routines.
