It has to be hard for a fan of Mambo Number Eight. It's a snappy tune, holds up well after all this time, but just a few inches away on the phonograph record of life sits Mambo Number Five. Mambo Number Five gets all the attention. Both tunes were originally released in 1949. Only Mambo Number Five is paid any attention by the mainstream today. Meanwhile Mambo Number Eight exists only to the few that get it.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgPVDRczMTU

Eastern Michigan is Mambo Number Eight.

Rob Murphy came to Mambo Number Eight from Syracuse, brought the 2-3 Zone with him, and has done things that Ron English could have only dreamed possible.

This game will be a meat grinder. The Bobcats figured out the zone last year, but were beaten handily the last time they travelled to Mambo Number Eight. Their performance against the Bowling Green zone on Wednesday has Mambo's fan salivating.

That is not the only reason Mambo's fan is salivating. To get fans there early and often, the first 500 fans through the Convocation Center gates will have access to the Tim Horton's Breakfast Bar, featuring donuts, bagels and coffee, as well as a limited edition "Beat Ohio" shirt. I will happily add one of these shirts to my collection of things nobody wanted. It will go next to my Milton Barnes bobblehead.

The combination of an 11 AM start preceded by a free breakfast for a select few, and the probability of morning snow showers has me thinking hard about traveling on Friday, catching opening night of Sesame Street Live at the Fox Theater and working a comp for a hotel room at the Motor City Casino. Doing "The D" on Friday will also help me to only have to travel route 23 and the prison hitchhiker corridor one time. The early start time also means I should be able to get to Mom Wilson's Country Sausage Mart between Marion and Columbus on the way back to sweet, sweet Jackson before it closes. I'd drive through anything for Mom's Jalapeno Cheese Wiener.

FJM-

Thanks man.  You have made my life easier.  Showed your threads to my wife and she looked at them just like she looks at me sometimes.  There is no arguing with how a mind gets from point A to point B--it should be enough that you can get there and so what , if along the way, there is a side trip or two.

This quote from the the YouTube site for the video sums up your point perfectly.  There is no description available..you just get it or you don't.

I would think that being one of the first 500 at the EMU convo should not be too hard to do.  Good luck with getting your t-shirt.

Another great pre-gamer from FJM.

Couple of additional notes:

1. The last two times the Ohio Bobcats  visited Ypsi and lost, they won the MAC tournament and at least one game in the NCAA tournament.

2. I assume FJM made neither of those trips.

During 2010, the roads along US 23 and 15 were quite treacherous due to high winds and drifting snow. Many vehicles spun out and were stranded. It would've made Real Jeff McKinney quite nervous.

And, in 2012  it was  Polish-American Heritage Day at the EMU Convocation Center. I arrived early and visited the various cultural displays. I met Miss Polonia USA 2012. There was plenty great Polish food.  Polish American trivia/facts were displayed on the scoreboard and some of the times out were used for Polish dancing and other activities. I only wish Oldkatz was rocking the PA microphone that day.

. I know Ted Thompson regrets to this day that he didn't make that trip -- he is a native of old North Dayton which has a strong Polish presence. I attended St. Adalbert Parish there as a youth - a Polish Catholic church which typically drew its pastor from Hamtramck/Diocese in Detroit. And, I ate plenty of fried fish and sometimes Polish sausage depending on time of year at the Polish Club across the street.

Joe, you remember that Kathy and I were there on that Polish American day, right?  That's the game following our blowing the big lead and losing to Toledo.  Then, at Eastern, I don't think we scored until the 11:00 minute mark, right?

I remember that!

And it was by far the scariest trip I've made to an away game. I don't think saying we saw >40 different 'accidents' (cars in ditch, crashed, or in median) would be a stretch. Second place was a UB trip. FB or BB, the weather stinks getting to EMU nearly every time. Hope it doesn't get as bad as they say, I'm planning on heading up again.

Polish sausage talk on references 'bout northbound excursions on RT 23?? C'Mon! - The best part of that road round trip is Fried Bologna Sandwiches (Best version IN The WORLD) and Fried Dill Pickles (best version of the on the planet also) at http://www.gandrtavern.com/ in Waldo! Hit the place right at late supper time on ride back south!

Only way we win this game is by Makin' It Ugly. Beat the zone by Bashing it, Drive into it, Dish it, Slash it, with no abandon and no regard for self health, or ref help.

Then, make the FT's.

Mo, Smith, Nick, TJ, Setty, Campbell - I wanna see 4 fouls on all of 'em. I wanna see a team that WANTS TO MAKE SUMTHIN' HAPPEN. Leave it all on the floor - last man standing wins.

OHIO 62 - flightless birds 59

I would guess the obvious will be displayed today.

DID WE LEARN ANYTHING FROM PLAYING AGAINST THE ZONE ON WED.?

This is a big game, as we seem to be floundering lately,  at 2-2 over that last 4 games.

I don't know what to expect out of this team lately.

If we don't hit some 3's and don't push the offense faster up the court before the EMU D can get set it will be along game.

I tried to make the trip to the game today, but the highways were so bad this morning I turned around and came home.  I like east of Cleveland and didn't even make it downtown.  Safe travels to anyone that was able to make it up that way.

Crowd must be a factor.
Tough to get up and play in front of 111 fans.
Cue the next thread topic.

The fouls against us are easy to call because we look desperate. Smooth we are not so far.

Taylor needs to control himself.
How stupid is it after his made 3 to then get t'd up and take all the momentum out of the team.
Coach did the right thing to take him out of the game.
We now have showed the rest of the league that we can't play against a zone.
We can't shoot the 3.
We are no longer a strong defensive team as well.
Only Maurice is playing well.

PLEASE PROVE MY COMMENTS WRONG IN THE SECOND HALF. PLEASE!

I wouldn't say anyone but Stevie is playing well. He has about half of our points and two thirds of our made field goals.

Edit: Stevie should have at least another bucket because of that bogus charge call.

While I do agree with sitting Taylor after that ridiculous T, you can't have him on the bench to start the 2nd half. Ain't gonna win with Bean running the show. He does not look like a Division I point guard. His game is mind-boggling.
And as far as Taylor goes...quit celebrating after every made 3. He was bound to get a technical at some point for showboating.
