If we can just be thankful for a 19 point victory on the road.  I don't know who most of you guys think we are but we ain't the 90 UNLV Runnin Rebels.  I get that we want to be the next (insert Gonzaga, Butler, VCU) but we are Ohio.  We are 13-4 and 3-1 in the MAC.  That's who we are.  We don't have a bunch of 4 & 5 star recruits so there will be some "not so pretty" games.  But damn, all I can ask for is a chance to win the MAC tournament and that looks like a possibility.

Enjoy the run we have been on (both football and basketball) because I remember a time when we lost to Ball State 3-6 @ Peden Stadium in football.  If there were 2k fans in the stands, I would be amazed!  #ilovemybobcats

I don't think anyone is unhappy that it ended up being a blowout, but playing one half isn't going to work against Toledo or an East team ona good day. This was another terrible West team so it's not the end of the world, but there are only so many terrible West teams.

How many games start out close then end up being a blow out?  The team with the better talent usually wins.  If all games were done after the first half....let's just say, all the Brett Favre, Joe Montana, Tom Brady etc. comebacks would be all for not.  It's a 40 minute game!   You don't play games on paper.  It's all about the end result!

That's an impressive string of cliches you threw out there. No, I'm not thankful or impressed be whalloping a team on the low end of D-I. Our record has nothing to do with what I said in the original post. Yes, we're winning against Ball State and NIU because of superior talent. That's not going to work against Toledo or EMU or Akron (as demonstrated). The question isn't how badly we beat the worst teams but how well we fare against the best. We've looked really, really bad for looooong stretches in every MAC game so far this season. That has to be a concern. I'm not asking for styles point or to be VCU. I'm asking for us to look interested and intelligent in the first half of a game.

athens  2 Jacksonville, you only have 10 posts and you may not know that the BobcatAttack board is not necessarily for only positive comments.  You will be accused of drinking green kool-aid or wearing green tinted glasses if you only talk about positives and don't question the coaching, the talent, or if you don't do some damning with faint praise.

The fact is that everyone here loves the Bobcats but as Bob Dylan said in "Tangled Up In Blue" : "We always did feel the same, we just saw it from a different point of view"

Welcome to BobcatAttack and Go OHIO!!

Lower end?

327th of 351 in offense. That is ....uh yep.....lower end.

Granted our scoring situation in the first half may have been due to the fact that they are top 50 in defense. Give our staff and players kudos for getting it figured out at the half. He ever gets a couple of kids taht execute his D AND put the ball in the hole the MAC will be seeing another uptick...

It is good for the MAC that this is happening as we could all benefit from the bottom climbing up. Defense at that point is getting buy in and effort. Looks like he has that wagon pointed in the right direction.

I streamed the Ohio radio broadcast of the game, which had all kinds of technical issues, so maybe I missed something, but it seemed to me that NIU was focused on stopping our inside offense and wanted to make our guards beat them. Once Nick & Bean got their outside shot going, we were able to force NIU to adjust and play a style more to our liking in the 2nd half.

EDIT: Also, I want to mention Campbell. If he can keep providing quality minutes when we rest Smith and Ndour, good things will follow.

During these first two weeks of conference play, has anyone noticed the seemingly increased number of road wins across the MAC?

If that continues it will increase my interest in league play.

Please don't be the hoop threads equivalent of the Bcat2 of the football threads...don't have the attitude that everything is 100%, totally, absolutely, perfectly sunny more than all of the time.

borna is correct that the wagon is turned in the right direction.  But I share JSF's view that we need to be more consistent.  Bad Ohio seems to be on the court 10-15 minutes a game for us.  Need to get him down to 4-7 minutes a game.

To me, it's about playing to our potential.  Sure, we'd like to have more talented guys, but we are decent enough talent-wise.  Talent is much, much, much less of a concern today than playing to our potential.

I saw only the 2nd half yesterday.  But from that, NIU ain't good.  We shoulda been up 8-10 at half.

Generally, JC has us playing much better in second halves.

Come on guys, these are 18 - 22 year old kids playing at Ohio University.  I am not saying that playing for 40 minutes at the highest possible level wouldn't be nice but it's not realistic.  Especially all the time and on the road.  I am just saying, a win is a win is a win.  And we won by 19 points.  Yes to an inferior opponent but we still blew them out in the second half.

I am just thankful to get any win we can get.  If these were professional athletes getting paid, then maybe I can understand only winning by 19 points and not playing the full 40 minutes.  But they are not.  I know we all love our Bobcats and I don't question that.  I just don't see how you can be that upset/bitter over a road MAC victory by 19 freakin points.

NIU came out with a really tight, high-energy defense that caused us to go late in the shot clock (we scored 23 pts with 50% shooting in the first half) and forced nine TOs.  But they're not physical enough to keep it up for the whole game.

We haven't cracked 30 pts in the first half of any MAC game this season.  Defense has carried us in the first half until the offense heats up in the second.  Fortunately, the MAC doesn't seem to have any high-powered offenses this season, so we might be able to do well the way we are.  I wouldn't bank on it, though.  I'd like to see us put teams away in the first half for a change.

Every team starts slow. It took me 30 seconds to find another team that had a similar game like this. Number 5 Wichita state was up by 4 at half to 4-9 Davidson. They ended up winning by double digits. I doubt their fans were complaining as much as we are. They probably didn't complain at all. Every team has bad games. As long as you pull through and get the W it doesn't matter. If I remember right the 2005 Ohio team was notorious for started slow and they would have the amazing second half comebacks and would find a way to win. Does anybody have any complaints on what that team accomplished.

and Monroe if we would go 3-8 in football 5 years from now and only get 3000 ppl to the games I bet you would give anything to go 7-5 and make a bowl. Compared to what Jacksonville has seen this is heaven. enjoy it while it last

In basketball recruits are measured more by if they are in the Top 100 nationally or state over the star system. Then as in football count up the offers from power conferences and top mid major clubs. Ohio's talent level is not too different than what you'd find on a solid A10 roster. Having a chance to win the MAC tourney every season was there going back to the days of TOS. He did it one time in 2005. The program has progressed to contending for the MAC regular season title every season.

JSF's point was not about yesterday in particular.  He's just asking for us to more regularly play better.

Don't give me excuses that any other team could cite--injuries, 18-22 year old kids, etc, etc.

Apologists do that.  Apologists find any reason in the world not to hit a reasonable standard.

Hey, you can't expect us to play well in white uniforms or on Tuesdays or road games or games on TV or games not on TV  or  blah blah blah  apologist excuses.

I don't know if I have enough energy to battle you guys.  I will be thankful with my 19 point victory, 13-4 record and again being the upper echelon of the MAC.

I am just saying, what do you expect from a group of kids who aren't the tallest, fastest, biggest etc.  Why can't we be appreciative for what we do have.  A very good MAC team who has given us much to root for over the last x amount of years.

I am not an apologist.  I am 35 years old so I give a break to all these college athletes.  Whether it be Ohio or Ohio state, they are still young men.  These kids are bound to make mistakes, not play to their potential or whatever it is they do to not meet your expecations.  I am a realist.  I think about all the dumb ish I did when I was that age (not that I am ancient) and I am thankful I am alive!

JSF also acknowledges we may only be an average team with a less than competent offense,  So it would make sense we would play inconsistently.  That said, we appear to be making solid halftime adjustments.

I am THRILLED expectations at OHIO are at the levels they are today.
13-4, tied for 1st place in the MAC and we have a winning record against teams in the Top 100 of the RPI... That now qualifies as an average team at OHIO! Just imagine what is in store for us when we move up to above average or even good!!!

The culture has changed.

I've seen crazier things happen.

For those new here .. ignore Monroe.  He thinks we should be a top 20 team in both basketball and football. Monroe isn't one with a lot of expertise  to make that call. At least he wasn't back when he was in Athens. Deal with reality Monroe .. we're in the MAC, not the BIG 10, ACC or PAC 10. Our accomphishments in the past 10 years in BOTH football and basketball have exceeded anything in decades. Unlike you, I deal with FACTS. We're 13-4 last I checked. Is that bad?

I'd take 13-4 with our losses being to two ranked teams, the defending conference champion and an Oakland team that had Michigan State on the ropes. But then again I'd be accused of being an apologist.... BIG MANZ!

No, no, no. This is not what I meant.

Process over results. Does the anatomy of a win not matter as long as the win is accomplished? I do not believe that. My OP had nothing to do with the result and everything to do with the process. For at least four straight games now, we have played poorly in the first half in a couple different facets. The defense has been excellent as usual, but we are lacking energy and urgency on offense. We're allowing rebounds that should be ours to fall into enemy hands. We're making silly, unintelligent mistakes (See Christian's comment reported by Eagle66). And we're doing it often. This worries me. We come out of the break a completely different team, which is good, but we can't keep getting away with it. Had we played a better first half against Akron, we might've won.

I'd rather win by 1 showing good energy and smarts the whole game than by 19 over a patsy by only flipping the switch halfway through.

Good points. We won't win games against better teams with major lapses for a half. But don't you think sometimes you play to the level of your competition? If we would have squeaked by in that game, it would be more of a concern to me.
