Loved watching A&M fans reaction when Penn State dropped in that last shot!

hard to complain about a bad win when every night you see so many bad losses in college bball.

UMass losses to St Bonnie tonight, that might knock them out of the top 25.

Today was my youngest daughter's birthday.  I told her it was "birthday karma" that a resulted in these two victories.  She's a Michigan graduate and a native Athenian, born and raised in A-town.

I think that is at least UMASS' 2nd conference loss.  Richmond got them about a week ago.  Still a very good team that has the potential to do some damage in March, but their chances of a good seed may be slipping away unless they start dominating the A10.

Wisconsin losing at home to Northwestern was quite the shocker too.

Beyond the RPI arguments that are specious at best, I see no other value in this than comparing the jacka-ninnies that say the Matta regime has to go to our own jacka-ninnies that say the same about Jim Christian.

We really. Really. REALLY. need to get off this Napoleon complex regarding the events in a middling amalgamation of suburbs and government institutions.

A few losses were funny and they took OSU out of Big10 contention, but now it's just overkill. These losses are hurting our RPI and SOS if even just slightly.

Why we are wasting time on gloating about OSU losses and our SOS and RPI amazes me.

Because they are our rivals.  Duh?!

In all seriousness, both teams have the same problem.  Both are above average defensively, but cannot get the ball through the cylinder consistently.  Why the struggles?

We lost our winningest class in history, which arguably featured the best player in program history, who was also our "go-to" guy.  Also lost Walt, who was a clear leader and absolute bulldog.  Difficult to replace.

OSU has seniors in Craft and Smith.  Neat.  Other guys who should  be in this class?  Sullinger - who had something like 22/18 last evening for the Celtics, Thomas - reigning B1G scoring champ, Jordan Sibert - 12.0 ppg for Dayton, and Weatherspoon - contributing nightly for Toledo.

Both teams lost a boatload, and are struggling in finding "that guy."

I'm more concerned about the teams we beat having success than the failures of the teams we lost to.  Our wins over Richmond (47 RPI), EMU (62 RPI) and Mercer (66 RPI) probably do more for us than losses to UMass (8 RPI) and O$U (33 RPI).  Beating Toledo (29 RPI) a couple times and getting Akron (92 RPI) would help pad our resume, if we need one, come March.  Nobody else on our schedule would help our RPI.  The key is to keep beating MAC teams -- especially the good ones -- and hope that would be enough to punch our ticket if we don't win out in Cleveland.

We will get by.
We will get by.
We will get by.
We will survive.

If they were rivals, surely we'd play OSU more often than once every 19 years...

Because it could lead to a very fun 12 vs. 5 match-up.

Hate OSU, definitely consider them a rival after they stole our name and took us to court but I want to see them win. We need the RPI points. This is and upsetting loss. I'll laugh when they lose in the first round of the tourney to a mid major. That would make me happy

I look at it the other way around.  The rivalry would escalate if they were willing to play us more often than once every 19 years.  I'm pretty sure the 19 year gap was mostly their idea, not ours.

My original post was not so much to "rejoice" as to express my astonishment. The same night the Bobcats avoided a crushing defeat, at home, to a lesser tier MAC team by successfully waging a comeback from an 18 point second half deficit, tO$U blew an 11 point lead with less than eight minutes left in regulation, only to lose to a lesser tier team in the B1G, at home, in OT. I do resent the fact that tO$U refuses to play any other Ohio team, including OHIO, except perhaps every two decades. Currently, both Toledo and Cincinnati are playing far better, in my opinion than the previously 3rd ranked Buckeyes. Contrary to popular opinion on the A&M campus, it is not beneath their dignity to play an in-state opponent on a regular basis. I would include Xavier, Dayton and others among those who, like OHIO, could be very competitive with them in college hoops. I know it is frowned upon in these parts, but I am a fan of the Bearcats as well as the Bobcats. After graduating from OHIO, I went on to Cincinnati for post graduate studies. So, everything posted on this board may not fit within the cookie cutout framework some might prefer to see, but that's the way it is. Looking ahead, I sincerely hope that the 'Cats do not spot the Rockets 18 or 20 points at any time during Saturday's game, but if so, may they claw back once again to win! Go Bobcats!

As of a few minutes ago, the Bearcats beat Louisville, at home. So yes, I would say that they are definitely better this year, right now, than tO$U.

Hmm . . . this is certainly not the first year that that's been true demonstratively.

A rival is what you make it. To many of our fans, O$U is a rival. That's a perfectly valid opinion to hold. Others can disagree.

It's just like how some might say Akron is a rival, while others would point to reasons (lack of tradition, short-term history, lack of football success) that they are not.

Rivalries are inherently personal. We love to hate Miami, but a majority of Miami fans don't care about playing us. Are we rivals? Objectively that answer seems to be yes, but not all of their fans would even agree. Rivalries do not have to always be mutual...though the best ones always are.

Likewise, whether O$U fans agree or not, to many of our fans O$U is very much a rival. Why?
- Competing for fans locally
- Stealing OUr name (or trying to)
- Competing for state funds/research dollars
- Competing for student entrollment
- Competing for media attention locally/regionally (newspapers, local TV news, etc.)

It's not just about wins and loses. We "compete" too much not to be rivals (though much of it is outside the field/court of play). In all reality, we are rivals with every university in Ohio...though O$U as the "big bully" gets much of the hate and attention.

So just who is Fiami's rival? I have heard them sometimes say UC, or UD. I don't think any UC or UD fans would say the same about Fiami. I suppose they are just so "elite" they don't actually have any sports rivals - so therefore why nobody gives a crap about their sports programs while there or after they leave..............
