With basketball quickly approaching, I was trying to think of what I expect from us this year.  Honestly, I have absolutely no idea other than to say we'll be able to compete well in the MAC.  To be honest, I haven't been able to follow the younger guys to see what they can do.  Also, we lost a lot of key players from last year, but the cupboard is far from being bare.  The first two regular season games will see what we're made of early.

What do you think?

I expect us to be one of the top 3 teams in the MAC.  We have five guys back who saw a lot of playing time last season and did really well.  Add in the newbies and we should be in there to win the East and maybe the MAC regular season.

We will get by.

We have so many newbies whom we seem to be depending on.  Gotta give them time to develop.

I see this season as I see football:  we get better game to game, being at our best at season's end.

We do have five players back, but they played mostly a supporting role.  Who steps up?  You have two likely starters who have never played a game here.  You have five freshmen who have never player and likely two will redhsirt.  I see a rough non-league start and a below .500  MAC record.  13-15 wins, hope I am wrong.  Until I see someone consistently put the ball in the basket with this group, I will be very skeptical.  I think they will be very good on D and the ball will move better on offense.  As mentioned in an earlier post, think this team gets better throughout the year.

2 against Toledo (who I think wins the league)
2 against Buffalo (Mcrae)
2 against Kent
2 against Akron

That's eight tough ones right there.

What makes you think Kent will be better than us? Or Buffalo? McCrea hasn't been a gamebreaker in the past.

I think Kent has a lot fewer questions marks and i like there starting line up (minus Henniger, who should be at some d III college).  I like Buffalo's two bigs in McCrea and Regan.  Plus, they will have a healthy PG this year.  They also are in need of someone to hit shots.

Buffalo will be a 20 win team this year.

They have an impact transfer coming in as well as a healthy Jarod Oldham coming back from injury.

I think Ohio could be better than them but Buffalo looks like one of the top teams in the MAC on paper.

We haven't identified a "go-to" guy yet, and we may not until well into the conference schedule.  With new faces and new roles, I'm not certain where the scoring comes from.  I love Nick Kellog, but his 3-point shooting regressed last year and he needs to return to the form he showed 2 years ago.

I am anticipating a better rebounding team this year.  I think we have some depth.  Hope everything comes together by MAC tourney time...

So we're just automatically assuming Hurley is going to be good out of the gate?

I think Hurley's eligibility is up.

However, I think if he is able to coach from a perspective of "it is our responsibility to do things to win" versus the Weatherspoon perspective of blaming the game outcome on everything else the athletes of Buffalo will win a few of the close ones that always got away...That does not bode well for Ohio from a historical perspective.

I think we may be picked to finish 6th behind Toledo, Kent State, Western Michigan, Akron, and Buffalo

Towards the end of last year, they started to play a lot better. They ended Akron's winning streak with a win at home.

They return almost everyone. McCrea is a beast. Regan is a solid forward. Skeete will continue to develop as a sophomore and returning Oldham is huge.

Add in their transfer guard Joshua Freelove who averaged 13.3 ppg last year at Alabama State and you have a pretty talented roster.

They were young last year but they grew as a team. They will play fast under Hurley. I think most people around the program aren't hoping for 17-20 wins this year but expecting it to be honest with you.

As far as what I expect from Ohio...anything is possible. There are too many unknowns on this team.

I think we have enough talent to still be a MAC contender this year but I don't know for sure.

If I was a betting man, I'd predict 16-18 wins. This team can be better than that but they could also be worse. TJ Hall needs to become an impact player. Kellogg needs to regain his touch from 3 and we need to hope that Willis and Ndour are as good as advertised.

If they are, this year will be a lot of fun. Can't wait for basketball season.

Unless Willis, Ndour, and Setty way exceed my expectations, I'm just not sure how we are are going to create shots and get consistent scoring.  It's asking a lot to replace three great players (D.J., Reggie, and Walt.) in one year and not see a dip in the results.  I guess if everybody on the roster buys into Christian's philosophy we might arguably be better on defense and can grind out a respectable number of wins.  But I just think scoring is gonna be a problem all year and a lot of people will be missing D.J.'s dominance especially in clutch situations.  It's not a total rebuild, but it will probably take another year to realistically challenge for a Mac title.  Still it should be fun to watch these guys grow and hopefully they prove me totally wrong.

I expect a bye to Cleveland. Period.

With our lack of experience playing together, I think we will have some growing pains in OOC play. That said, we are too talented to not finish Top 4 in the conference. I think that is setting the bar pretty low... We have some ballers.

This sounds about right.

Our opponents should just focus on Willis and dare anyone else to score.  Nobody else has proven they can do at this point.  Of course, they haven't been asked to either.

I hope we are the team nobody wants to play in March.  Kind of like 2009-10.

I hate to say it and come under attack but we are going to be better by year's end as opposed to last year when we didn't peak. I feel like our length alone with Ndour, Mompremier, Smith, Setty and Campbell will help us rebound TONS BETTER! I love Walt but he was undersized. I loved Ivo but he didn't rebound. I loved Reg but for all of his inside moves he didn't rebound well. How did Akron beat us last year? Tread and Zeke inside and when we collapsed guys hit shots on us. We didn't have that last year. This year we have inside presence. Just watch. T.J. Was one of our top rebounders when he came in at 6-6 last year, this year he is going to kill.

Rebounds and defense will be enough to do whatever Ohio wants in the MAC. More games in the 50's and 60's. Long term the program is better prepared to win at tournament time. JC has enough on this team to work with and next year will be the real test of his coaching strength.

does that mean 6'6" ? That s like listing Leon at 7 foot. I'll give you 6'4 in shoes. Top rebounders because he actually went to the rim instead of running the other way.

It happens every year in college basketball though.  Players adapt their roles all the time.  It might be a huge problem but you never know.  Ricardo and T.J. could blossom with more minutes. A lot can happen.  The problem is that we've only got one player who is playing anything close to the same role he did last year.  I'm not sure how good we will be but I'm pretty confident we will be in the upper half of the league.
